Style: Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
First brewed back in 2004, Curieux was our first foray into barrel aging. To make Curieux, we take our Tripel and let it age in bourbon barrels for seven weeks. Once that time is up, we take the beer out of our cold cellars and blend it back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting rich, golden ale features smooth notes of coconut, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon.

*25.4 oz. bottle March 1st. date* Look: Brilliant golden honey amber, what was a 1 finger white head turned into a white ring around my glass. Smell: Bourbon, wet hay, spicy, honey graham crackers, faint alcohol, subtle flowers. Taste: Like the aroma yet much richer. Vanilla, subtle hints of coconut, nice fruity pear esters shine through the overall bourbon characteristics, nice hints of flowers in there with a honey wheat bread sweetness, no alcohol heat or flavor is detected, lemon zest in there as well, there is a nice bitter bite to it as well. Feel: Medium-full body, tight active carbonation. Overall: Man, this ale is a hit for me. 11% ABV is not even a presence in the flavor, very devilishly. The malt sweetness gives a little to let you know it is a big beer. I’m very impressed on how flavorful this ale is and yet it is delicate at the same time. A lovely combo Balanced and Dangerous! The bourbon isn’t overdone and the Tripel components are just right. This brew is Recommended!

Served on draught, 5/18/2014, in tulip glass. Evening Star/Planet Wine in Alexandria, VA.

A- Creamy opaque copper with 1/4 head.

S- Dates and dark fruit notes giving way to citrus and a little vanilla as the beer warms.

T- Light raison and vanilla notes, bourbon flavor is not readily separated from the beer and makes a fantastic contribution. Great dry finish, sly warming alcohol with no undesirable hotness.

M- Light in body and effervescent yet full and creamy. Great tripel style body.

O- Very interesting contribution to the style, highly recommended for those who enjoy tripels. Would like to get a corked bottle for the cellar.
