Brewed by:
Allagash Brewing Company
Maine, United States

Style: Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
First brewed back in 2004, Curieux was our first foray into barrel aging. To make Curieux, we take our Tripel and let it age in bourbon barrels for seven weeks. Once that time is up, we take the beer out of our cold cellars and blend it back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting rich, golden ale features smooth notes of coconut, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon.

Had this a while back, just getting to putting up a review now.

Poured from a 750ml bottle at Le Mondial.

A very nice treat. Dark in appearance, boozy in aroma and flavor but with a depth that showcases the Belgian flavors mixed with the bourbon. Sweet tasting and easy to drink. A real treat!

The beer pours an amber light orange with a frothy white head that develops into a thin collar. The beer is slightly hazy with very lively carbonation. The oak bourbon barrels impart a wonderfully complex aroma of vanilla and tropical fruit. The fruitiness is complex with several layers that is very enjoyable. Slightly phenolic and spicy as well from the yeast.

The beer begins with an initial full mouthfeel and creaminess that imparts a vanilla sweetness. Sweeter than I would prefer that inhibits drinkability and takes away from some of the finer subtle qualities of the yeast. It's difficult to differentiate whether the sweetness is imparted from the vanilla notes of the bourbon barrel or simply the attenuation of the beer. That said it is a little nitpicking and personal preference.

Sweetness aside the phenols and spiciness are somewhat subdued compared to the scent. Very full mouthfeel as one would expect from the style. Throughout the beer the barrel aging is very evident, but there isn't a hint of alcohol presence.
