Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Curieux was the first foray into barrel aging. Curieux is made by aging our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam bourbon barrels for eight weeks in our cold cellars. The aged beer is then blended back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting beer is soft with coconut and vanilla notes, with hints of bourbon.

1pt 9.4 fl oz bottle that was bottled on 2/15/15 poured into a tulip glass. A mainly clear golden yellow/orange with a one finger head that retains as a creamy lace for a good while. Aroma is slightly sour, with some bourbon and yeast notes. The taste is more muted and rounded, with green olive (?) notes and bubblegum . Not much of the 11% is there, other than a slight reminder on the finish. The mouthfeel is very smooth, carbonation low. Overall, an interesting BA tripel. I wonder at what age point this is optimal, I have to imagine this less rounded at bottling.

The most noteable thing about this beer is how well balanced the bourbon barrel aging is: it is subtle but makes its presence known by contributing a richness and depth to the flavor profile.

2015 Bottle - has been in my fridge for about a year...

Looks good, smells like a tripel should, and taste is right in line with the style. Its clearly a very well made beer, its just not one that I can get very excited about.

The barrel aging adds little to the beer except to possibly soften the feel a touch? Maybe? I don't know, there are no signs of bourbon, and while it drinks nice enough for a big beer its just not anything I would seek out again.

This beer is awesome. Amazing sweet smell. Delicious taste. Can't even tell this is 11% alc. couldn't recommend more regardless of price.

on draught

A: a fairly clear, straw gold, 1 finger head, good retention, nice lacing
S: immediate white grape and estery belgian yeast notes, a juicy; cleanness is present here with some bourbon notes popping up as the beer sits (not very pronounced though)
T: not as sharp as one might expect, immediate caramel malt note, clean and somewhat mild (though not overly prominent) bitterness, no real depth to the hop character here, quite boozy and sweet, the bourbon is not very present here, not overly fruity as one would expect from a belgian, a decently astringent quality, a tad vinous, sweetens up as it sits
M: sticky, but not overly so
O: a tad underwhelming, I was expecting a more assertive bourbon note, that being said it is a good beer, not great, but good, but judging by american tripel standards there are better beers that are cheaper and easier to find, the bitterness of the alcohol was the only thing I could distinctly label as bourbon reminiscent, which was disappointing, thought to be honest I was skeptical of how well the flavors of bourbon and a tripel would marry anyway
