Style: Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
First brewed back in 2004, Curieux was our first foray into barrel aging. To make Curieux, we take our Tripel and let it age in bourbon barrels for seven weeks. Once that time is up, we take the beer out of our cold cellars and blend it back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting rich, golden ale features smooth notes of coconut, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon.

Absolutely the very best and most well done bourbon barrel aged beer I've had the pleasure of drinking. What is already a solid tripel in it's own right is made better by the barrel aging. The bourbon flavors are there but take a nice subtle backseat approach. Not hot enough to burn and yet present enough to notice. Very nice . . . The case can certainly be made that Allagash brews the very best examples of Belgian beers in America.

pours a hazy golden orange with at least a finger head that dissipates quickly. smell is that of a typical tripel (bananas, oranges, coriander, peppery) with, unfortunately, little to no barrel prescence. taste is very similar to most other belgians, but has a little something extra. solid beer, but nothing overly impressive as i was slightly let down based on the other reviews here and left feeling underwhelmed.

750 ml bottle, wine glass

A – Golden orange, hazy, possibly just chill haze. A white foamy head of a half-inch with long retention. Sudsy, proteiny, gorgeous.

S – Funky, like very mild brettanomyces, which from my understanding is NOT used in the beer. This must be derived from the oak barrels. Tangy bread dough, and citrus-orange.

T – Very lemony-citrus, with a hint of nectarines and peaches. The vanilla/oak character is subdued but very noticeable, again an impression of some funk here. Some fresh bread dough, and citrus and tropical hops, with guava and mango in the mix.

M – Highly carbonated, but a light frothy/spritzy feel. High level of dryness throughout, especially on the finish. This is very well-attenuated. Enough bitterness to keep things balanced.

O – Even though it’s not supposed to be there, I definitely get the impression of Brett yeast, which I like! Appears to be character from the barrels and the bourbon previously contained within. Either way, very complex, a lot of layers of aroma and flavor, and matches well with some savory foods. Excellent.

Hazy golden amber color with a thick head with decent retention.
Aroma with notes of pineapples, light white oak and oranges.
Delicious flavor of coconut, vanilla, pineapple, mint, lemongrass, elegant tartness, oranges, white pepper, herbal hops, pears, white wine and a bit of banana. And I was almost forgetting, a touch of bourbon, which had a perfect level for the style and overall beer. Dry, almost astringent, aftertaste with a lingering fruity taste.
Medium body with appropriate carbonation. Great example on how to hide an 11% abv, amazing.
Hard to beat Tripel. Excellent complexity and wonderfully balanced. Quite flexible: very drinkable or great sipper.
