Allagash Curieux was the first foray into barrel aging. Curieux is made by aging our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam bourbon barrels for eight weeks in our cold cellars. The aged beer is then blended back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting beer is soft with coconut and vanilla notes, with hints of bourbon.

On cask at Paradiso.
Pours a very hazy, cloudy medium amber to bright orange color. Just a shimmer or bright white head is formed that quickly is reduced to a covering and soon nothing. The aroma is difficult to grasp with the cask pouring (minimal carbonation hurts), but soon notes of sour cherries, citrus, moderate clove and vanilla come through. On the palate, however, things develop. Flavors of strong oak hit you hard first, followed by vanilla, spicy phenolics, and a little citrus. The cask conditioning makes things a bit muddy, with a bright citrus tripel clashing with the strong oaky and bourbon flavors. The mouthfeel is heavy with low to minimal carbonation. Overall, it was a very enjoyable and extreme beer. The oak was a bit overpowering though hindering the drinkability.

Exceptionally smooth and balanced Belgian Triple. Slightly tart and spicy from the wood but not overpowering like other barrel aged beers. Personally I like the Interlude better, but, as always, Allagash comes through in making another kick ass beer.

On-tap @ Taco Mac in Crabapple (Crabble Mac).

Appearance: Pours a clear blonde body with a small, white head.

Smell: Restrained aroma of bourbon mixed with white wine and candy.

Taste: Bourbon-influenced, semi-sweet pale malt flavor and notes of vanilla, wood. Dash of pinot grigio. Lemon sorbet fruitiness and light spice in back of the bourbon. Hint of honeysuckle. There's plenty of candi sweetness on this ride, but it still manages to finish somewhat dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied bolstered by a creamy mouthfeel. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: It's pretty good. Go on, give it a try. What harm could it do?

On cask at the Dirty Truth in Northampton--I love cask ale, and was excited to hear about an Allagash tripel on cask while I was there.

Pours a blonde color into a chalice-style glass. Very rich aroma, lots of citrus and other fruit flavors mixed with some hints of alcohol and also a distinct richness--I could sense complexity from the very first smell of the beer.

It may have been this pour, but the mouthfeel was surprising! I wonder if this would have been better bottled, or maybe it was the surprise of low carbonation from the cask with a distinct alcohol flavor that I more regularly associate with the powerful, viscous, mouthfeel of belgian tripels, but I would have liked a bit more richness here. The taste itself is rich and complex, not overpowering--and actually is probably more drinkable than many other of its style. However, after being so excited about the smell and it being on cask, I was a bit disappointed...definitely worth trying, and an ambitious project from Allagash.

a: This one is a slightly cloudy pale golden color. It pours with a huge fizzy white head that has great lace.

s: Huge bourbon smells dominate, along with some woody vanilla. Some of the tripel does manage to sneak through, aromas of yeasty sour apples.

t: Things are much more in balance here. Early on, flavors of earthy grainy yeasts, peper, cloves, and mildly sour apples are all blanketed by bourbon flavors. The finish is a wondeful wave of woody, vanilla bourbon goodness.

m: This has a nice oily texture and a pleasantly gentle carbonation.

d: I wasn't sure if bourbon barrel aging a tripel would work, but Allagash has done fantastic job with this one.

This cork wouldn't budge. It actually broke before I had to use a corkscrew to get the rest out. Is this sugar on the cork that sticks it so?

It opened with an aroma of brett and spices and the pour was slightly heady. The taste is prickly and boozy (one of my faves) The color is deep gold like chardonnay that is almost too old but still tastes good. The lace on the side of the goblet is irregular and up the side about an inch.

Sweetness and bitterness kick in about mid glass. This is well made stuff. Allagash does well with this one.

Thanks to smellysell for this bottle.

Pours a dark straw, bordering on orange with a thick two finger head that settles, eventually, to a thick cap. The lacing leaves a solid sheet of foam on the glass.

Smell; oak and vanilla with a little coconut kick things off. The fruits are more prevalent than I though they would be with the barrel aging, with some apricots and pineapple.

Taste; the bourbon is very evident, but is not overpowering. Oak and vanilla mix nicelyl with apricots, pineapples and coconut. It's pretty sweet but the bourbon, a bit of a hop spiciness and a dryness from the barrels help to keep it moderate. Overll this is one awesome beer, with the bourbon barrel aging being an integral part instead of taking over the beer.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, with a smooth creamy carbonation. The drinkability is really good, despite a noticeable alcohol presence.

On tap this weekend

A - sort of an amber gold with a nice head, very cloudy, which I really liked. Dunno why, it just looked really nice

S - hints of vanilla from the bourbon aging. Fruity with a fair bit of sweetness and a few hop notes, and the alcohol is definitely there. It's almost like a wine aroma with sort of a grape smell to it. Very interesting

T - very similar to the smell. Fruitiness is really there, and the sweet isn't overpowering. It's quite pleasant actually. The alcohol does come through again, and it probably should at 11%. Body has the same wine-ish/grape flavor to it, but there is also some spice.

M - medium body and a good amount of carbonation. Enjoyable for sure

D - definitely drinkable, but only in small quantities. Incredibly delicious and complex. Really liked it, but obviously couldn't do these all night. Would totally order again though. Check it out if you can. Glad I got it on tap as 1 glass was about a third of the price of 750 mL at the store =)

Pours a nice golden color with a complete frothy head. The nose on this beer is quite nice. The bourbon barrel aging is very good. Just the subtlest of hints of oak and bourbon. It really compliments the beer instead of taking over. This is a real treat, something I could drink all day long. A very nice, well rounded, well put together beer. I've got absolutely no complaints.

New Years corked bottle tasting extravaganza with grub and biegaman! grub supplied this, 2007 vintage.

Pours a hazy orange/yellow, thick white head forms, solid, lots of lace, great retention. Smell is soft butter, oranges, bread, wheat, spices, vanilla and bourbon, lemons, oak, some alcohol, pretty complex. Taste is vanilla, lemons, fruity, peach and apricot, alcohol, oak, caramel, bourbon, pretty big flavour. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Pretty damn solid and the bourbon works well with this one. Thanks Russ!

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a snifter.

A: Golden and hazy with an ample white head. Maintains a nice cap after the initial head is gone.

S: Lots of alcohol, vanilla, and sweetness. Has a smell like a bourbon or brandy.

T: Fruity sweet and vanilla flavors, with a hot alcohol and slightly bitter finish.

MF: Highly carbonated and light on the tongue despite the strong flavors and alcohol. Very warming in the stomach.

D: Very drinkable, but quite strong. I would definitely drink more of this if it wasn't so expensive.

May 2007 Bottling

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden with a small, bubbly head. Light lacing.

S: Phenolic with a slight tropical fruit smell with some bourbon aroma in there as well.

T: Much like the smell, brisk phenolic and fruit flavors with a subtle sweetness. An intense vanilla and bourbon taste quickly overwhelms the palate with a harsh earthiness. The overall taste is still quite good, but a bit one-dimensional and quite intense.

M: Full-bodied with a lot of carbonation. Sticky with a lingering tannic sensation.

D: Interesting and an all-around decent beer, but the intensity of the barrel flavors makes this one a bit dificult to drink right now. Share it with a friend or better yet, lay it down for a while.

A- Golden with brown hues. Nontransparent. Head is 1/2" and bright white in my snifter.

S- Bourbon, citrus, oak, hoppy scents and alcohol warming the nose and chest.

T- Bourbon, alcohol, a little bit piney and definitely oaky.

M- High carbonation and medium mouthfeel.

D- Great for a stand alone beer and for the experience.

Overall- For what it is, it is amazing. The complex tastes are nice and the fact that this beer tastes so much like a nice drink of bourbon whiskey is astounding. I enjoyed it alot. I could not drink it everyday, but it sure was a tasty treat!

January 2007 bottle.

Bright golden color, a bit of white head, nice thick lace.

Big rich smell. Sweet roasted corn, whiskey, vanilla, peach, spicy yeast, toast, herbs. Dried fruit notes along with the peach, like golden raisins and dried pineapple. Quite appetizing.

Tastes of bourbon whiskey, big time. The bourbon is dominant, but well integrated, and the beer is somehow well balanced. Sweet stone fruits and tropical fruits, and a bit of citrus rind. Herbal and earthy hops come in, followed a few seconds later by vanilla and toasty oak, slightly astringent, deep and nutty, with something like toasted coconut. Fairly sweet all the way through a long balanced bourbon driven finish.

Smooth fine carbonation, with some oiliness and a hint of astringency, makes for for a good texture. The oiliness matches the texture to the rest of the profile. Very drinkable for what it is.

Very good stuff, great use of the bourbon barrels.

Had this on-tap at The Dirty Truth in Northampton, Mass.
Light amber color with hints of honey. The bourbon added some nice hints of vanilla, putting it out front of many of the other tripels on the menu. We had this at the end of the night, four strong beers into a tasting, so take this review with a grain of salt. But I'm confident that if I ordered this again, I'd feel the same on most accounts.

On-tap at Hollingshead's in Orange, CA, $8.50 for a 12 oz. pour into a Chimay chalice, 2007 Edition, I'm pretty sure of it,

A: Pours a standard goldenrod yellow, with a nice white head, average retention, with average retention.

S: Bourbon, spices, ale yeast esters.

T: Very tasty, at first tastes just like a really good tripel, great yeast esters - spices, apple and pear - straightforward, the bourbon then comes in and adds a light touch of vanilla and oak/wood, some more complexity to just put i over the top. Absolutely delicious in a style I did not think would benefit much from Bourbon Barrel aging, great job Allagash.

M: Very crisp for its weight, great carbonation character, and very smooth with the aging.

D: A great beer, it seems to have lost some of its bourbon character from the 2006 edition which I last had on Halloween Night, 2006, but still is an excellent beer. Expensive, but well worth it, very satisfying.

On tap at O'Brien's Pub 14th Anniversary Barrel-Aged beer night 1/15.
A- Pours a light orange hue, off white head is mostly dissipating, minimal lacing
S- Brandy and oak dominate, subtle aromas of sugary sweet fruits, some malts and vanilla as well
T- Oak and bourbon notes ride in first, subtle molasses and alcohol warming in the midsection, finishes dry and sweet
M- Medium-bodied, oily texture, mild carbonation
D- Interesting blend of flavors with a strong wood presence, however most of the tastes dissipate quickly leaving not much in its wake, underimpressed with this trippel

750 ml from Manderes in Folsom, CA.

A - Golden color, moderate head, with no legs.

S - Awesome. Never smelled anything like it. Notes of wood, bourbon, clove and smokiness. You can tell it was aged in Jim Beam barrels.

T - Cinnamon, all-spice, bourbon, but the wood doesn't dominate in the taste.

M - No alcohol flavor, yet I can only sip a little at a time to get the bourbon and smoke flavors out of the beer.

D - Somebody build a cigar tent quick. Excellent way to finish a night.

750ml caged and corked bottle, bottled November 2007, bought at Lou's in Augusta. Pours a hazy golden amber-red body with a quarter inch (if that) of off-white head. Smells fruity/citrusy and woody. Tastes citrusy, pithy, malty, with a fair bit of wood and hints of vanilla toward the finish. A little bit of alcohol warming is evident on the finish, but buy no means overwhelming or solvent-like. On the heavier side of medium-bodied with moderate carbonation, bordering on sticky mouthfeel but the carbonation helps make this one more drinkable than it might otherwise be. Tasty and complex. I think I'll stick to drinking Allagash Tripel on a more regular basis, but this is a very good beer and definitely glad I gave this one a go. One of the best barrel-aged beers I've had so far.

750ml heavy brown bottle dated September 2007.

Pours a luminescent and slightly hazed gold. A modest half-inch of head receedes quickly, leaving persistent lace tendrils. The beer smells strongly of sour oak, pepper, and rounded fruity vinegar. Must and earth linger at the edges. Very nice initial presentation. The flavor is peppery and fruity at first. Becomes velvety smooth, dry and woody, with a huge rounded alcohol presence in the finish. Strong enough to numb the throat and warm the stomach. The beer feels light and a slightly fizzy at first, but this changes to a warm and creamy smoothness as the alcohol takes hold. A very good sipping beer for a cold winter night. Would be even better if the alcohol didn't so overpower the other flavors. Could perhaps be mellowed with aging.

5 ounce glass at O'Briens in San Diego for $2.50 on the barrel aged beer night during their 14th Anniversary week

Color was a yellow orange color with a golden tint when held up to the light, expected this one to be much darker, nice 1/2 inch soapy white head, good retention, and some very impressive lacing

Smell did not have that much bourbon in it which was a little shocking to me, instead there was a lot of sweet sugary aromas, several different kinds of sweet malt and fruity scents, also some oak and vanilla

Taste was a lot more calm than I expected it to be, the bourbon accents were very faint and provided no real intense boozy flavor, definitely traces of Belgian yeast, lots of sugar, some caramel and other sweet malt accents, lots of vanilla once the beer warmed, the oak started to shine through towards the end as well, could have used a faint amount of hoppiness to balance out more but it was still good, not a bad barrel aged beer overall

Body was pretty thick but needed some more carbonation to balance out its syrupy texture, taste lasted long quite a long time, creamy mouthfeel

Could have drank a pint or two of this, the ABV will catch up to you in a hurry though, I do not see anybody drinking too much of this, alcohol is hidden pretty well for a beer over ten percent nevertheless, pretty heavy on the stomach

Fairly new to Allagash brews and this one was the best of their beers I have tasted, I need to try Interlude next, very calm for a strong beer and quite unqiue, despite the very expensive price tag, around sixteen dollars for a 750 ml bottle, I recommend this bourbon barrel tripel to those who have not tasted it yet

A - One finger of pure, white head on a hazy golden body. Leaves nice lace as the head settles.

S - Strong boozy, vanilla scent (actually smells more like rum than bourbon to me). Sour cherries, sweet alcohol, herbal hops, and an inoffensive hint of sulphur.

T - Sweet malt, very sugary and lots of vanilla and bourbon character (really tastes like bourbon instead of rum this time). Sticky almost cloying sweetness up top with a strong, woody oak note. There is some definite bitterness and hop flavor, but not quite enought to balance the sweetness. The finish is mellow and smooth with notes of oak and vanilla and a good bit of warming alcohol.

M - Moderate carbonation and heavy body but a surprisingly dry finish despite the initially heavy sweetness.

D - Wow, quite a big, interesting beer. It is extremely heavy but the finish leaves me practically itching for more. The bourbon notes are really great and have me wondering why I stopped drinking hard liquor (though at 11% if I finish the bottle in one sitting I might remember the reason).

I am initially inclined to think that this would be a great beer with a cigar, but I wonder if it might be too sweet to make a good match. Perhaps it would go well with something light and spicy, but there is only one way to find out.

Tasted about a year ago and have wanted to find it since. Found a bottle recently. Certainly has aromas of sweetened vanilla and oak, very nice. This has a nice big complex flavor, slightly sweet and not over the top. This might be a great beer to introduce people to the world of craft beer. I am very surprised that it's at 11%, it's very smooth. I'm still on my first pour, so maybe some other qualities open up when it comes to room temp.

I just had this on cask at The Olde Toad in Rochester, NY. Served in an 8oz. Tulip.

A - Golden hue with little to no head. Slight lacing left after each sip. Richer color than an American Pilsner, not as dark as a red. Didn't share the same color as other tripel's I've had

S - Malty. Over the top, orange peel and nutmeg were present.

T - Orange peel and nutmeg with an instant alcohol flavor. Not overpowering, no hoppiness. No bitterness, very clean aftertaste. The bourbon barrels definitely left their mark, as well as a very faint vanilla taste.

M - Just slightly carbonated, what you'd expect from an ale that had been ages in oak barrels for months. No extra carbonation at all.

D - This could be deadly. I'm glad I had a driver. This beer is amazing. I really couldn't drink more than 1 or 2 without getting hurt, but I might be willing to try.

Bottled January 07, and deliberately aged until January 2008 to drink.

Pours a shimmering gold color with a fluffy white head of 3 fingers. The Duvel tulip that houses this beer maintains a foamy cap of head and is marred by dense lacing.

Aroma is very yeasty, with a distinct woody hard liquor note and some tropical fruitiness.

The bourbon barrel influence on the flavor is unmistakeable. There is a breathtaking oaky vanilla booze bite in the middle of the palate that just melts into a fruity sweetness that finishes pleasantly dry. The warmth in the chest imparted by this beer is trademark whiskey, and it blends surprisingly well with the sweet tripel notes of pear and orange.

Mouthfeel is wonderful, with a quite Belgian carbonation and a nice dry finish for such a sweet and rich beer.

This beer is a bit hot and you can feel it. The booze really comes out with too much warmth, which makes it harder to drink.

Overall this beer is interesting, unique, and delicious. One of Allagash's best.
