James and Julie is our take on a Flemish sour brown and offers an aroma of raisins, figs, cherries, and caramelized sugar. Mahogany in color, this medium-bodied ale finishes with clean acidity and a hint of spice. We brew this sour brown ale with Pilsner, Special B, Maize, and Chocolate Malt and ferment it with our house yeast strain. It then ages for two years on stainless steel with our own blend of Lactobacillus and Pediococcus cultures.

Beautiful clear mahogany pour with a compact half inch tan head. Nice to look at...
Ohhh...smells nice, too. I get caramel sweetness, a little cocoa, a tartness that strikes me as fruity vs vinegar. Very mildly funky. Raisins and figs on top of the caramel, maybe a touch of cherry and some other fruity things going on.
The taste is more controlled than the smell suggests. Very clean but assertive tartness, then caramel, bready malt, and it does have a fruity character that is sweet and dark, but there are other elements that taste like plum and maybe pear. The malt is sweet and kind of brown bready and there is a faint sense of cocoa powder. The funk is quite mild, being more earthy and grounding than in the face barnyard. Mello, maybe the result of graceful aging?
Medium bodied, lightly carbonated, a little stickiness.
Overall, I think this is a very refined beer. Nothing dominates to any great degree, and the flavors play off one another nicely. The net effect is a pleasant tartness and a very clean beer. Definitely a worthy beer from the good folks at Allagash.

2017 bottle.
This one pours a light brown color, with a small white head, and lots of lacing.
This smells like red berry, caramel, cocoa powder, red wine, oak, and vanilla.
This has aged really, really well - it honestly might have gotten better with time. There's a very pleasant and soft tartness, with a complex fruity and caramel like bready maltiness. There's also some chocolate and a hint of red wine.
Allagash beers always tend to age well, and they always tend to be some of the most underrated beers out there.

Very solid Flemish brown ale. Tastes sour, but not too sour. good aromas with dankiness as well as tartness bundled into one. Very earthy and great drinking.

Bottled June 20, 2019 and picked up at the brewery on October 12th. It’s a rare occurrence that I get to drink a Flemish sour brown ale and even more special coming from such a top notch brewery. Nose is super aromatic and complex, with dank wood, dark sugary fruits, and even bourbon barrel?? Flavor is similar, though heavier on the earthy, fruity character. Pleasantly tart with plenty of carbonation. A seriously well-executed Flanders Oud Bruin!
