Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Map40 is a Belgian-style stout blended with cold brew coffee. Black in body with a tan, reddish-tinged head, this beer’s aroma is strong in coffee and light in roasted grain. Brewed with dark chocolate malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, and brown malt. A light nuttiness accompanies tastes of chocolate, raisin, and a resounding coffee note that weaves its way throughout. This is a rich, creamy, stout with a warming hint of alcohol in its clean finish.

L: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a dark, mahogany brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, tan-colored, fairly long-lasting head. Very good lacing.

S: A very nice aroma of coffee, roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate, and some Belgian yeast.

T: Tasted of a fair amount of Belgian yeast, a mild bit of char up front (not overpowering), a nutty quality, a good shot of coffee, a little bit of chocolate, and some dark fruit (raisins). An interesting flavor that wasn't what I expected. It's not really in keeping with the style, but it's extremely flavorful and easy to drink. Quite tasty.

F: A decent amount of carbonation with a silky smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: An unusual take on the BSDA style. Very much worth a look.

Pitch black, small tan head, no lace.
Strong coffee aroma. Chocolate.
Ditto taste. Espresso coffee upfront, followed by sweet chocolate.
Very smooth and creamy.
Another hit from Allagash.

Black in color with minimal light penetration. There's a fingernail of brown around the rim and covering half of the middle. The aroma is of dark roasted and lightly bitter coffee. I'm tasting dark coffee and nutty, dark malt. That coffee flavor is very consistent throughout the palate and lingers long after swallowing. The mouth is lightly oily from the coffee and there's a bit of depth and yet is fairly viscous.

The beer pours out a dark brown almost black color, with a thin dark khaki colored head-------------- the aromas are of coffee for days, chocolate, roasted malts, wheat toast and dark fruits----------------- the flavors are of raisins, prunes, coffee and bitter dark chocolate, the beer has a medium creamy mouthfeel with a bitter coffee finish---------------- overall this was a delisious coffee stout, the coffee, bitter chocolate and dark fruits all come together wonderfully with a wonderful creamy mouthfeel---------------

Damn, I'm picky with coffee beers, but this uses the addition well. It's not too bitter, too roasted, or bringing green pepper like so many. The smooth java flavor blends into a rich dark chocolate, that begins to dry as it finishes. There are notes of creamy caramel and dried fruit in the background. Very well balanced and satisfying without being too thick. TL;DR dry mocha beer.

12 oz bottle into ball jar. Note: Bottle says 7.7%, not 7.5

Pours a very dark blackish brown with a 2 finger soapy head that settles down. Aroma is strong wafts of coffee and chocolate. Taste follows the smell combined with a zing of moderate bitterness and mild alcohol burn. Roasted coffee flavor is mixed well with chocolate - very well done. I don't get the raisin taste at all but maybe my buds aren't attuned to it. The Belgian yeast is a nice twist away from coffee porters and works well. Feel is smooth with a slight burn in the aftertaste.

Overall a great choice. I almost passed this up - didn;t realize it was a one-time thing. Very happy I didn't now.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a nice looking dark brown close to black color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off delicately.
The aroma had some sweet and spicy Belgian chocolate and allspice up front. Some nice earthy portions then raisins accompany the second half of the nose as it warms. Coffee and barley grainy sweetness start to open this up a bit more.
The flavor was a fine meshing of sweet and spiciness. The coffee was there, but not necessarily an afterthought, perhaps a bit more. Moderate aftertaste of sweet coffee, raisins and earthiness.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt spot on. ABV's felt as projected. Nice coffee sweet and raisin-like finish with a mild touch of Belgian chocolate.
Overall, really nice beer that would be better during Winter. I'd have again.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with a bottling date of 1/11/18. Sampled on March 1, 2018.

It pours a deep jet black with a modest, lingering tan head that also leaves lacing on the glass.

The coffee notes take center stage in the aroma with a more moderate citrus or pear-like fruitiness and roasted malts.

Medium body or thereabouts.

The coffee bitterness encapsulates the flavor sensations as the dark roasted sweetness leads to a mildly fruity and bitter finish.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and small strings of lacing down the glass.

This smells like ashy roasted malt, creamy roasted coffee, licorice, smoke, and chocolate.

This is called a Belgian-style stout with coffee, but I don't get an exceptional amount of Belgian characteristics. The coffee dominates the base (Allagash Black?) here, which works well, because it's a tasty coffee. I get licorice, smoke, chocolate, a kind of almost herbal seedy character, raisin, and pine. This is super complex and really tasty.

This is medium bodied, creamy, and very drinkable. I definitely wish it was a little thicker.

Allagash can do nearly every style well- coffee stout is one of my favorite (sub)styles and they've nailed it here.
