Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Odyssey is a dark wheat beer aged for ten months, a portion in oak barrels and the remainder in stainless tanks. The recipe includes 2-row barley, malted wheat, a generous amount of roasted barley and Belgian candi sugar. This deep brown beer boasts an aroma of black treacle and raisin. The flavor hints at dates, with a mildly roasted finish imparted by aging in both medium and heavy toast American Oak barrels. The finish is dry, punctuated by vanilla.

2014 Release. This pours a very deep shade of brown, bordering on black, topped with a lasting tan head. Strong aromas of oak dominate brining an almost charred smells mixed with faint aromas of raisins and apricots. There is a faint yeasty funk in the background. There is a whole lot happening in the flavor department - raisins, apple, faint vanilla, buttery biscuits, and a long oaked finish. The feel is rather lively for a barrel aged ale and very pleasant to drink.

Paid $30 for a 750ml bottle. Ouch. That said... it's pretty good. Love a strong dark belgian ale and this does the style justice. Dunno if I would pay $30 again but would def. get if it were on tap somewhere.

Really enjoyed this beer. The beer looks like a darker stout, but it has a lighter more refreshing taste….somewhere between a roasty coffee taste and a lighter ale. I was expecting a stronger taste considering the ABV. The beer was pretty pricey, but that could have been due to its rarity outside of the New England area. If you can get your hands on it, I would recommend.

This beer had a wonderful roasty malt character that I was not expecting upon trying the beer. This has a really nice malt heft to it and sits on the palate for a long time after each sip. Kind of a hard beer to characterize (somewhere between a belgian dubbel/quad and a german weizenbock) but I was really pleasantly surprised by how good it was (Idk why I questioned the quality of an Allagash beer).

Hints of chocolate, vanilla, oak, molasses . . . Pours a murky brown with a touch of lacing. Carbonation is a nice touch on this Belgian inspired beer and decent mouthfeel. I really wanted to be blown away by this beer and was certain I was going to be. But, it didn't happen for me. Alcohol is faintly noticeable. Still a very solid offering so it wasn't a let down by any means.

2011 Bottle. Dark brown in color. Opaque in appearance. Smells chocolaty. Light, cherry skins, some brown sugar sweetness. Earthy. Very subtle flavor. A bit oxidized.
