During transport overseas, early India Pale Ales were stored in wooden barrels. In these barrels—beer experts suppose—some ales were naturally inoculated with Brettanomyces, a form of wild yeast. Brett IPA plays off this piece of brewing lore by pairing Brettanomyces—a yeast that exhibits itself as ripe fruit rather than strong funk or sourness—with multiple varieties of fruit-forward hops.

Aromas of citrus, pineapple, and passion fruit meld into tropical flavors that pair nicely with the beer’s lightly hopped body. Maris Otter, Munich malts, and raw wheat balance the floral barrage of Bravo, Cascade, Amarillo, Centennial, Citra, and Galaxy hops. By finishing with a mix of pleasant bitterness and tropical fruit, Brett IPA ushers brewing history into the present.

Hazy golden, rocky white head. Very tropical and juicy up front. Freshly sliced mango, melon, citrus fruits. Yeasty and bretty with a mild funk. Just the slightest suggestion of tartness. Biscuit/toast. Creamy/airy medium body. Mild funk in the finish. Complementary tropical/mildly funky Brett character to back up the juicy and tropical hopping.

Bright straw yellow. Head dissipates quickly. Smell of funky yeast, tropical fruit, and floral notes. Taste is well balanced and has just enough Brett to give it a funky feel.

Pours a chill hazed deep straw producing nearly 2 fingers of short-lived, foamy, egg shell white head that leaves a thin wash of spotty lace. Aroma slightly tart, lemon/lime sherbet, orange, pineapple and apple, Brett musty funk, earth, hay, resinous hops and a blue cheese-like (dirty socks) hint. There's also a bready hint. Taste is citric (heavy to tangerine and orange) and tropical notes, Brett mustiness, cheesey ammonia, apple cider, earth, spice and pine hops. Finishes prickly and dry; it recedes to a citric, fruity, Brett/wild yeast funky afrertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation, drying as you drink; tongue wrapping it dances with a fine prickle. Reminiscent of Green Flash's much lamented (by me) Rayon Vert, this brew delights me. I look forward to more.

Bottle from Whole Foods UWS, NYC (bottled in 8/23/18). Appearance is cloudy tan yellow with thin creamy white head and good lacing, smell is quite fruity and funky, passion fruit and sour dried apricot, and it swerves back and forth between cat piss and overripe strawberries, taste follows the nose, passion fruity with bitter and funky swells of brett, a little thin. I think the age of the bottle tells the story but this is a a quiet fruity brett monster.

12 oz. poured into a tulip.

Appearance: A frothy straw with a big white head that recedes quickly. Lots of carbonation.

Smell: Tropical fruits, funk.

Taste: Fruity IPA with lots of funk and hop bite. Kiwi, orange, grapefruit. Some barnyardishness going on.

Mouthfeel: The alcohol and funk make it more of a sipper than a sessioner.

Overall: Good stuff. Should appeal to brett people and IPA people.

On tap. Not sure how accurate it is to have IPA in the name but it's a damn tasty beer. The beer pours clear. Aroma is huge Brett notes. Citrusy elements from the hops slide in as well but the dynamics elements of the Brett win out. Brett flavors are intense but really clean out on the finish. Awesome beer.

12-oz. bottle 09/23/18 needed a strong pour to get a half finger of fast dissolving foamy white head with minimal lace.
Pale straw color with small rising bubbles, a slight haze and brightens to yellow in front of light.
Sour candy, grape bubble gum, silage and mild barnyard funk for the nose.
Hop bitterness, tangy apple cider and old wet grass starts the taste as sour and funk invade the semi-sweet malty middle. The flavors from the smell are present. The finish is quick and dry with a funky, hoppy, peppery(the alcohol?) aftertaste.
Light-medium body with hidden carbonation and a smooth creaminess towards the end.
Not as big on funky and sour flavors as Little Brett. This beer has a greater malt and hops presence, it does say IPA on the label (The end of the taste and the feel are IPA like). There is a lot going on here, this beer benefits from warming and sipping like wine.
