Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Victoria Ale was inspired by a visit to Victoria Mansion, in Portland, Maine and the visual references to Bacchus, the god of wine. The brewer's decided to fuse the worlds of beer and wine. Over two hundred pounds of Chardonnay (Vidal Blanc in 2010) grapes were brought in, crushed on site and added directly to the mash. Victoria Ale's aroma is fruity spice, and the taste presents subtle notes of green banana, black pepper, and fresh-crushed mint. With a focus on the subtle, wine-like character of the grapes, the 9.0% ABV brew boasts a pale copper color, Belgian yeast influence, and a medium body with a long candied fruit finish with hints of honeydew melon, and, of course, white wine grapes.

look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Appearance:
The head is a nice fluffy white that lats quite a while. The beer itself is a nice orange and clear gold color.

Smell:
The beer has a grainy and bready smell with hints of the white grapes coming through. The grapes aren't very powerful but they certainly overpower the hops. The beer also smells of pears.

Taste:
The beer tastes as it smells but the grapes are more noticeable and blend well with the yeast and bready malt flavor. The grapes do come out more as the beer warms and blends even better with the yeast and pear tastes. The beer has a very pear aftertaste.

Mouthfeel:
The beer feels medium bodied but very smooth with biting carbonation. The beer leaves a particularly dry finish.

Overall:
A pretty decent and unique that I will probably pick up again if I can find it on sale.

2013 vintage served in a tulip glass

Appearance: Pours a light golden yellow color with 2 fingers of a white soapy head. Body is slightly hazy with medium levels of carbonation streaming throughout the glass.

Smell: White grape, pear, spice, slight cereal grain, biscuity malt, and red apple.

Taste: Spicy yeast, pale malt, white grape, pear, apple skin. Light sweetness upfront is balanced with a mild bitterness that lingers through the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, somewhat slick mouthfeel with medium levels of slightly rough carbonation.

Overall: Very good Belgian pale ale. The grapes add some nice additional complexity without overwhelming the base beer. Worth picking up a bottle.

On-tap 6/18/2013 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a bright yellow color, with a large white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains Belgian yeast, citrus, bananas, light caramelized malts and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with flavors of citrus, caramel and bananas. Then some breadiness comes in from Belgian yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. There’s some spice in the background along with a decent hops presence creating a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a solid and flavorful Belgian-style beer to drink for a long time.
