The Victor Ale was inspired by its feminine-named predecessor, the Victoria Ale. With chardonnay grapes to make the Victoria Ale unique, our brewers decided to use red grapes for the Victor. Over one hundred pounds of cabernet franc grapes were crushed on site and added directly to the mash. In addition to a generous portion of Pilsner malt, Victor is hopped with Fuggles and Hallertau and fermented with a wine yeast strain. With a focus on the subtle wine-like character of the grapes, the 9.0% ABV brew maintains a copper color, wine yeast influence and a medium body with a tart and spicy finish.

Had this on tap at Seymour in Greenfield. The beer had a clear amber appearance with a large head and thick lacing. Aromas were extremely rich with dark fruit, but in particular cherries. Very tart and citrus-flavoring with the beer. A generally medium mouthfeel gave this average carbonation which helped with the dark fruit flavoring. Overall, I enjoyed the flavor dimensions with this beer, particularly in its aroma.

Pours a somewhat darker gold, little bit of carbonated head that settles into a thin lacing. The nose is pretty straight concord must. Very robust, sweet grape aroma. Not much "beer" presence but that's fine. I actually prefer this to its sister beer Victoria - the red grape flavor meshes better with overall profile of the beer (which isn't superb - just some dry yeast notes & chaffed german malt). The chardonnay of the former was too delicate & got lost in the beer, whereas here the backbone is much more supportive of those wine notes. It almost tastes like Welch's grape jelly with some dry yeast / cork / horse saddle notes on the tail. Overall it's earthy with a good sweet dash.
