Very Good
Darling RubyDarling Ruby
Notes: Darling Ruby is a refreshing farmhouse ale with a twist: grapefruit juice and zest. The beer’s specific style is a grisette, a light and refreshing cousin of the modern saison. The combination of a grisette and citrus whirls tangy notes together with tropical aromas—all before landing on a beautifully dry finish. A lively ride from beginning to end.

My goodness did this pair well with a lobster roll. Enjoyed a draft pour while in Portland.

Golden body with lively carbonation. Head is more fizzy than creamy. Not quite clear but close to being so than cloudy.

Aroma is lightly tart driven by grapefruit flesh and rind, lemon zest and a little bit of pepper. Not picking up much funk - more yeast and tart fruit. Maybe a little bit of green apple on the tongue.

Crisp, clean and dry - the hallmarks of a beer that serves as an excellent companion to food.

A- Tallboy fills a chalice with a slightly hazy golden body and a one finger, thick creamy white cap. A small ring at the edges drops wide sheets of lace while a few frothy islands remain in the center.

S- Spicy Allagash Belgian yeast opens everything up with coriander, slight peppercorn, lemon zest, pear esters joined by vanilla sweets, whole grains, hints of grapefruit juice and zest and herbal hints.

T- The grapefruit becomes bolder here with the zest and slight juice opening things up for the strong Belgian yeast which is spicy and somewhat fruity with phenolics and esters abound. Coriander, pepper, slight cardamom, pears, slight apple, whole grains and light Pils barley hints.

MF- The texture to this one is fluffy and creamy and the carbonation level is on the high side. Ends with an herbal bitterness.

Another really nice and balanced Belgian brew from the Belgian masters of the USA. Grapefruit is bold but still folded into the mix of the yeast and grains very well. Keep these great canned beers coming please.

Look: It pours slightly hazy and straw with a white pillow head. Head retention is excellent.

Smell: There are lemon and citrus aromas to start. There are dough wheat elements with grapefruit and earthly touches in the background.

Taste: There are lemon, tropical fruits, citrus, and grapefruit in the flavors to start. There is a bit of spice and earthly elements in the background with a bit of dough.

Feel: It a medium light body with dryness in the finish.

Overall, a combination of citrus and tropical flavors dominates the other elements in this saison.

A: The beer is hazy yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that left a large patch of bubbles covering most of the surface, a narrow collar around the edge, and some specks of bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of grainy malts and yeast are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of yeast with associated hints of peppery spices and notes of grainy malts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and rather dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and has some refreshing qualities. It tasted a lot like a grisette and I didn't get any of the fruity aromas or flavors.

From the bottle label, printed in white on a blue background: "03/06/19 11:27"

Appearance: The body is hazy and light gold colored. A short white head rests on top with poor retention that lends itself to a mere ring with rafts of bubbles. No lacing.

Aroma: There is a slight bit of pepper and wet cardboard with some clove. There is only a touch of what smells like wheat on the nose.

Taste: In the foreground there is a bit of a vanilla character with some wheat flavor. Towards the middle there is a strong white pepper flavor and a bit of lemon zest. Towards the end there is a touch of rosemary.

Mouthfeel: It is light bodied with a wet finish. Medium effervescence.

Overall: It feels like a beer that is right on the verge of being great but is restrained by this dull and mellow character. The label states that this is a "Farmhouse Style Ale with Gapefruit Zest" and it does meet the mark, but there just isn't enough grapefruit character to even identify what kind of citrus is in the beer, and it isn't dry enough to really accentuate the flavors. I probably wouldn't buy it again but I wouldn't recommend against buying it either.

Can from a Lazy Dog
Lightly hazy light golden color with a small tightly bubbled white head that dissipates quickly but leaves lots of stickies on the glass. Light apple, light earth, light funk, light citrus fruit, light like water. Love Allagash but this one in Meh.

Can. A night, light little beer. The can art somehow mislead me. I was expecting a heavily grapefruit infused beer. This is far from it. Wouldn’t actually pick out grapefruit at all here. Just a light, crisp, Belgian beer. It’s kind of a misleading offering but I actually enjoy the liquid far more than I was expecting to.

On tap:
Body is a bit grimy with a mix of amber and straw, but the thick whipped cream head is pretty nice.

Nose is straw and light bread, with a hint of the added grapefruit. Just a bit of mustiness, too. Taste follows suit with a nice medium dry light saison base with a bit of hay, attic must with a bit of dry wood, and dirt. Grapefruit is deftly used to add a hint of the fruit more than the tartness of the grapefruit. Sneaky bitterness builds by mid-glass.

Light and near watery with a moderate to low carbonation. The watery aspect actually fits with this beer, as the flavors seem to be given some room to come out on a cleaner base. Another nice one from Allagash.

O: not as much grapefruit as I expected or wanted;
