Very Good
River TripRiver Trip
Notes: A companion to backyards, backwoods, and balconies alike. River Trip is a Belgian-style session ale with hop-forward grapefruit and stone fruit notes. It’s brewed in the table beer style with local grains and spiced with coriander for an extra hint of citrus. Dry hopping with Comet and Azacca contributes to the mix of melon and grapefruit notes in the beer’s aroma.

Allagash in a can! New offering to boot, although this has a taste and feel somewhat similar to their hoppy table beer and, less so, their house beer, which is one of my favorite Allagash beers period.

Light, refreshing, eminently drinkable - pretty sure this is what they were going for and, if so, they nailed it. Light citrus (grapefruit, pear), light coriander (less so than White), kiss of pepper and Belgian yeast esters. Fun beer that can certainly be sipped and scrutinized but is at its best slaking a thirst.

Pours a hazy gold. Smell is grapefruit and clove but subdued. Taste follows with some spiciness and lemon. A bit fizzy but goes down easy. Nice beer

With Spring coming around New Haven it's time to ditch the stouts and the heavier IPAs and bring back the lighter beers. I don't know what style will be trendy this summer, but I vote for these Belgian style session ales. The Belgian yeast is doing hard work on this beer, frothing the head in an aesthetic fashion and giving it a nice herbal quality on the nose. The taste is a wonderful mixture of bubbles and Belgian flavors. Not too many fruit flavors or yeast touches, but more grain and continental hop notes, and an overall quality of being very quenching.

Can from Whole Foods UWS, NYC.
Pours an opaque pale gold with a generous fluffy white head and excellent lacing, smell is mild and light, orange blossoms, peach, rose, and a hint of grass, taste follows the nose with mild orange fresh sweetness up front, apple juice, a light Bretty funk, and finishes with a pithy/grassy hint of bitterness, this beer is super soft. A complex Belgian crusher.

Golden slightly hazy hue with thick foamy head.

Not much on the nose.

Light bodied and decently hoppy. Sharp carbonation with a somewhat bitter backend. Reminds me of grapefruit.

Overall not the best I've had from allagash and wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Something didn't work on this beer. Very thin and watery, and a peppery flavor with bitter hops.

This one pours a slightly hazy light yellow with a small head and lots of lacing.

This smells like clove, pine, grassy hops, super light funk, and crackery malt.

This accomplishes exactly what it seems to have set out to do - it’s a lightly hoppy, super crisp, and lightly funky little banger. The clove and spice is done subtly and well, with a mild fruity and grassy hoppiness. It’s a perfect little crusher.

This is very drinkable, and super crisp, with a light body.

I’m loving see these new Allagash cans. This is pretty lovely.

Allagash Brewing Co. "River Trip"
16 fl. oz. can, coded "5901 04/10/19 08:28" and sampled on 07/09/19
$3.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: I'm just going to dive right in on this one: hazy yellow gold body, fluffy and tall bright white head, spicy aroma. I can tell it's got a lot of carbonation to it as there are hundreds of tiny bubbles streaming quickly upwards alongside the glass. On to the flavor... the spiciness continues in a big way. It's earthy like coriander, and peppery like white pepper. The base malt is basic. It's grainy, and maybe a bit wheaty, but not bready or sweet. I'm getting some yeasty fruitiness as well, mainly orchard fruits, but also a pinch citrusy. It's very much like a saison. So let me now go back and check the label... no, nothing about a saison, it simply states "Belgian-style Session Ale", but of course that's what saisons really were, and usually at less than the 4.8% abv found here. What I was just about to say was that the label mentions melon and I didn't find any, but with my last sip it was right there, and out in front. I guess I should have let it warm up a little bit at first. I've still got a big dollop of creamy foam on top, and there's some very nice lacing where the head has fallen. In the mouth it's light-medium in body and effervescently crisp. That probably enhances the perception of the spiciness. In the end I can understand why they've called this "River Trip", because at the end of a run you really want something crisp and refreshing, and not too heavy - this would be perfect.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a semi-hazy/cloudy color with a Ricky foamy cap of a head, white in color and slowly dissipating. Soft filmy waves of lace string out in messy rings.
The aroma takes some baked Belgian breadiness to flow evenly through some cracked coriander seeds and lemon pepper. Subtle lemon rind and melon peel punch their ways into the mix.
The flavor leads with a semi-dry crisp lemon pepper to lemon rind-like character to play with soft Belgian bready sweetness. Dry lemon rind bitterness in the aftertaste with some Belgian bready tones.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a good sessionability about it. Good carbonation and plenty of smoothness. Finishes crisp with an unyielding grassy and lemony tone to it.
Overall, I'd say a very nicely done Belgian pale ale well worthy of coming back to. And would be wonderful with some halibut steaks!

Low abv beers can be pretty hard to come by and seem to be very difficult to make well. This isn’t quite there and is under flavored in every way, but it gets the job done. It’s definitely a beautiful beer, though, with great head.

16oz. can served in a willibecker. Pours a pale, hazy, yellow-orange with a dense, one inch, bright white head. Nose expresses hints of citrus, rind, coriander and an herbal quality. Taste follows nose; however, a biscuit malt backbone really shows through in the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is light in body with an assertive carbonation that ends with a slight bite. Overall, a solid example of the style.

Pours an intensely bright, lemon drop yellow. A broken archipelago of white foam strands leaves a slippery sheet of lacing that slides down the glass.

A fistful of Belgian white wheat interspersed with bananas and a dainty whiff of apricot.

An energetic, light body characterized by a fizzy field of ubiquitous micro-bubbles. Sessionable as advertised.

Tame, tart banana wrapped up in a thin, wheat wafer. Light, clean, and crisp.

An easy pour from a 16-oz. can(3/20/19) yields a finger of creamy long lasting off-white froth with a sticky ring of lace. Golden-straw color, slight haze with decanting, cloudy without.
Light smell of pale malt,(sweet and toasted) with grainy wheat, grapefruit and cut grass.
Coriander is noticeable in the taste along with orange, lemon and pear. Semi-sweet and lightly bitter, sweet malt and citrus battle. Drys with increased bitterness at the long yet clean finish. A mild spicy bitterness lingers a while. Medium-light body, ample carbonation.
Smooth, sessionable, a break from over-hopped ales. Warms well, alcohol is hidden.
