Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Black is a Belgian style stout brewed with 2 Row barley, torrified wheat, oats, both roasted and chocolate malt and a generous portion of dark caramelized candi sugar. The silky mouth feel is a great balance to the roasted character, coffee and dark chocolate notes expressed throughout this beer.

Purchased at the Winooski Bev in Vermont in July. Poured in to an Allagash goblet.

A - Damn near pitch black with a couple fingers of tan head. Very nice lacing.

S - The coffee dominates, followed by chocolate and charcoal. The faintest smell of dark fruits. The Belgian yeast spiciness starts to appear once the beer is warm.

T/M - Bitter chocolate, some dark fruits and coffee. Warming alcohol towards the end. Moderately dry finish.

O - Not as good as I remember from tap, but not bad either.

Sometimes Raul is put in a place where "it is this, or it." His baby mama once gave him said ultimatum, and lets just say this: old ma is currently knitting in the next room. So, like this Allagash Black that Raul just ingested, it was pretty much "that, or it" - and Raul quite enjoyed it.

Not Coca Cola fizzy, not thin, not insipid... Raul was pleased. Order it again, maybe not. But it was solid for what it is.

Aroma here is rather muted...both out of the bottle and when in the glass. There's a roasted, coffee or dark chocolate aroma a light stout more than anything. I don't really get the sweetness from the candied sugar on the nose. It really smells a lot like a light stout. I'm sure it won't TASTE that way....that's just my deviated septum nose here.

Pours jet black in the glass, as expected...head is rather thin. Nothing to write home about. Is what it is.

The taste is pretty interesting. It's actually what I wish most "sweet stouts" would taste like. The roasted note is there, though reserved (as it was on the nose). Light chocolate malts as well...a note of coffee perhaps. But there's also a definite candied sugar presence there that's side by side with the malts and is every bit as pronounced.

This isn't a bad beer at's certainly different. Basically a light stout with the infusion of candied sugar. Goes down pretty easily.

I love this brewery: 2 for 2.

Poured into a stemless wine glass after dinner, want to nurse this beer like sherry.

Appearance: Pours a blackish dark brown with a tan head that falls quickly for a Belgian, laces dots and arcs all the way down. Reforms films with a swirl, good looking.

Smell: I get modest chocolate, dark fruit, and peat. A bit of hay, barnyard. Laid back for a Belgian.

Taste: While starting sweet, finished nice and dry. Begins with classic stout, w serious chocolate dark fruit as well, then becomes smokey and Licorice by mid, and adds caramel, malt, and peat toward the end. a coffee lovers brew!

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body, definitely weighty creamy, with medium, pin point carbonation. Great tingle, great finish. Doesnt end sweet. (How do they do that?)

Drinkability: highly recommended and enjoyable, original, one of the best stouts. Must try. Meditation beer. 7.5% sipper.

Pours a deep black with a large rocky cream colored head. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma is dark roasted caramel and chocolate malt, yeast and slight fruity esters. Taste is dark mildly roasted caramel and chocolate malt, some notes of Belgian flavored yeast and fruitiness, mild bitterness from the roasted chocolate malt and mild tartness. Palate is a medium body, slight creamy mouth feel with mild carbonation. Finish is a mild roasted caramel and chocolate malt with some bitterness, some Belgian yeast, tartness and fruity. My take on this, it is a good, tasty and enjoyable brew.
