Brewed by:
Allagash Brewing Company
Maine, United States

Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Black is a Belgian style stout brewed with 2 Row barley, torrified wheat, oats, both roasted and chocolate malt and a generous portion of dark caramelized candi sugar. The silky mouth feel is a great balance to the roasted character, coffee and dark chocolate notes expressed throughout this beer.

Pours a deep black with a large rocky cream colored head. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma is dark roasted caramel and chocolate malt, yeast and slight fruity esters. Taste is dark mildly roasted caramel and chocolate malt, some notes of Belgian flavored yeast and fruitiness, mild bitterness from the roasted chocolate malt and mild tartness. Palate is a medium body, slight creamy mouth feel with mild carbonation. Finish is a mild roasted caramel and chocolate malt with some bitterness, some Belgian yeast, tartness and fruity. My take on this, it is a good, tasty and enjoyable brew.

A middle-of-the-road Belgian strong dark ale. A little bitter-ish and a little light-bodied, but worth tasting.

Bought a four pack in Maine while here on vacation. 12 oz. bottles.

Pours more lively than most Belgian strong dark ales, but the head settles pretty quickly. Fresh-brewed coffee appearance.

I can pick up the malt and the yeast, not as strong as most European examples of this style. The nose is not going to scare away the lager drinker.

I can detect that that candi sugar was used in the boil, this beer has a light mouthfeel for a BSDA. Perhaps I can also sense that the torrified wheat is also lightening the load. There is dark chocolate ending in a "baking chocolate" aftertaste. If you're in the mood for it, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Overall, it seems an America version of BSDA. Not bad and I consider this a palate stretcher. If you're tired of malty ales, this one starts the swing back to the "less malty" portion of the spectrum.

Dark color and great taste. A sweet smell that translates into a smooth drink. I know this is one of the best stouts I have had. Very smooth and flavorable. Just a great taste. One of the beers I would say everyone who ha had one should try again. I am going to bring some home to share.
