Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Black is a Belgian style stout brewed with 2 Row barley, torrified wheat, oats, both roasted and chocolate malt and a generous portion of dark caramelized candi sugar. It pours a very dark brown, almost black and yields the same color body in my chalice. A small soft filmy one centimeter tan head appears and dies within fifteen seconds. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen. No lacing is seen. The smell is very complex and inviting with some dark chocolate coming in very lightly along with some banana and raisins. The taste brings back the dark chocolate, banana and raisins yet also has a bit of roasted coffee. The alcohol comes out a bit as the beer warms. The palate is about a medium to heavy with nothing bad on the tongue. It gets pretty creamy and the carbonation is light all around. Overall, I’m glad I tried it and am pretty sure I would have this again.

12 oz bottle. Pours brown with tall, creamy, beige head, nice lacing and lovely carbonation. Aroma is of herbal hops, toasted malt and coffee. Body is medium and slightly crisp. Taste is of toasted malt, coffee, chocolate, dark fruit and herbal hops. Finish is long and bittersweet. Overall good brew.

I had high hopes, but nothing was "standout". Great Belgian yeast flavor as expected, but the malt profile gives me slight "iron" & "metal" flavors. Overall an ok beer, but I hoped for way more.

Traditional optics. Overall a good beer but nothing really stands out. The yeast adds a surprising earthiness to the darker malt flavors, which is nice, but some of those malt notes are a tad too bitter or phenolic.

Looks were a bit deceiving for this delicious brew. The tannish head was minimal and the blackish-brown body expected. There is a decent amount of beige lacing. Aromas include dark roasted malt, coffee, caramel, and cocoa. Thick, richly complex strong ale is delicious. Caramel meets coffee and dark, bitter chocolate wrapped is deeply roast malt. Velvetly and smooth. A nice warmer.

Almost jet black color.aroma is strong like an imperial stout but not so heavy on the alcohol. Taste follows the aroma, roasted malt, coffee, but not overwhelming alcohol yet a bit warming. Allagash can do no wrong to me and although this isn't my favorite beer from them I will definitely get this again

L -- Very dark brown with a three-finger tan head produced by moderate pour. Decent retention and lacing.
S -- Doughy yeast, roasted malts, dark chocolate, pepper, and a hint of coffee.
T -- Less exciting than I was anticipating: pretty much your standard stout, focusing on well-roasted barley malts, coffee, and dark chocolate flavors. A little bready sweetness comes through, which is really the only "Belgian" aspect that I can taste. Slight vegetal/sour aftertaste.
F -- Silky and smooth
O -- Nothing much to complain about in this brew, but unlike some of Allagash's other offerings, I can't say it's worth the ~$10/4-pack pricing.
