Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Black is a Belgian style stout brewed with 2 Row barley, torrified wheat, oats, both roasted and chocolate malt and a generous portion of dark caramelized candi sugar. The silky mouth feel is a great balance to the roasted character, coffee and dark chocolate notes expressed throughout this beer.

A: opaque; cola brown - doesn't lighten up much at the edges; less than 1 finger light brown head that receded quickly to a thin collar; very little lacing;

S: bittersweet chocolate first, then strong black coffee with dark fruit; a hint of pepper and vanilla;

T: deeply roasted grains and dark fruit up front; yeast comes forward in the middle and stays through the finish; mild bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; highly carbonated; dry finish; hides the ABV well;

O: nice complexity, especially in the aroma;

Unknown vintage; drank 3/15/15 @ the Yarchives.

Poured from the bottle into a glass.

Black/brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice tan head; strong lace.

Tart cherry, tobacco & dirt notes in the nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

Caramel, toffee, oak & dirt flavors up front; mild clove notes on the finish. Very unique but quite enjoyable. I'd live to have another.

Black in color with no penetration to light. There's a fingernail of beige covering the vast majority of the top. The aroma is loads of dark malt,black licorice, and sweet dark Belgian candy sugar. I'm tasting a plethora of dark malt, black licorice, and sweet dark Belgian candy sugar. The mouth is very dry and smooth.
