Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Confluence Ale is created with a mixed fermentation; utilizing our house primary Belgian style yeast in combination with our proprietary Brettanomyces strain. The two yeast strains work in tandem creating a marriage between spice and fruit flavors that ultimately leave a lingering silky mouth feel. Confluence is brewed with a blend of both imported pilsner and domestic pale malts as well as a portion of caramel malt, resulting in a complex malty profile. Tettnang and East Kent Golding hops are added in the brew process to balance the intricate malty profile while adding a sweet and spicy citrus aroma. After fermentation, Confluence undergoes a lengthy aging process in stainless steel tanks to enhance the flavors. Prior to bottling, it is dry hopped with a Glacier hops, providing a pleasant balance of aromas.

Bottled 2/03/2016, so just a few days shy of two years. Pours a luminescent golden color with an inch of off white head that falls slowly and leaves some pretty lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell is funky Brett, some grassy and slightly fruity hops, with a rustic grain character. Taste is follows with a bright vibrancy. Lemon peel, rustic, farmhouse-esque grainy character, a bit of hops that comes off more herbal than fruity, and big funky Brett overtones. Feel is medium bodied with soft carb and a beautifully dry finish with a tinge of funk and herbal hop character lingering long after the swallow. Overall, a beautifully crafted beer, more like a saison than I’d expected. Bright lemony character with ample Brett character to keep things very interesting. The flavors and aromas work like a symphony together. Harmonious and sublime. Killer, killer stuff, and age has done nothing less than extraordinary work with that brettanomyces showing its potential.

Slightly hazy burnt gold, but be careful with a full pour, as you can see a good amount of swirling sediment in the bottom of bottle. An active, large white foam settles to a central dome with a fuzzy collar leaving spotty lace.

Smell is lemon, phenolic spice, apple, pear and a hint of white bread crust and grassy funk.

Taste is tart, lightly sharp acidic funk with grass, fiery hops and phenolic spice all outdoing the Brett, which swallows with a slight burn.

The light, frothy airy body has a slick swallow, finishing semi-dry.

Poured the 2017 version into the test glass.
A - Excellent clarity, steady marauding carbonation rises to support a pillow of a white cap
S - Dusty Brett, semi sweet grain, apricot, warm sourdough rising, honey and Wow what a nose.
T - As complex as the aromatics let on. Warm toast smeared with orange blossom honey, some white pepper, cheese rime,
a bit of brett dustiness. Great apricot, orange reduction, and the slightest bit of pineapple.
M - Dances across the palate, medium to light in body, start is a bit sweet then the brett takes over. Deftly applied so the funk is in check. Palate response is sweet then tart then back the the middle.
O - A real delight, Allagash has the touch when it comes to mixed cultures, flavorful, bright, and worth seeking out

Slightly funky but more yeasty in flavor and no sourness. Full bodied and hearty brew. Feels bigger than 7.5% Another finely crafted Belgian offering from Allagash.
