Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Confluence Ale is created with a mixed fermentation; utilizing our house primary Belgian style yeast in combination with our proprietary Brettanomyces strain. The two yeast strains work in tandem creating a marriage between spice and fruit flavors that ultimately leave a lingering silky mouth feel. Confluence is brewed with a blend of both imported pilsner and domestic pale malts as well as a portion of caramel malt, resulting in a complex malty profile. Tettnang and East Kent Golding hops are added in the brew process to balance the intricate malty profile while adding a sweet and spicy citrus aroma. After fermentation, Confluence undergoes a lengthy aging process in stainless steel tanks to enhance the flavors. Prior to bottling, it is dry hopped with a Glacier hops, providing a pleasant balance of aromas.

2015 bottle (750 ml) had 9/1/16 at room temp

A: contents under fucking pressure (this beer tried to kill me for opening it), prominent three finger head, foamy and soapy not creamy, good retention, pale gold, not quite hazy, insanely prominent lacing,
S: smells like orval, apple cider vinegar, pepper and funk, a lot of pepper indeed
T: subtle malt sweetness followed by traces of fruit, not as sour as the nose would lead one to believe, there is a touch of biscuity malt here that distinctly points to the malt body of a belgian style ale though I'm not really sure why (i'm not an idiot I know this is a belgian style ale but something about the biscuit character specifically does this), tartness (with a hint of hop bitterness) comes out as the beer sits, as you introduce more to the glass the sharp tartness will appear more.
M: exceptionally dry (my personal preference in mouthfeel honestly)
O: not as good as their FV 13 but excellent nonetheless, it's nice when the main person you are outdone by is yourself. Very good though, worth looking for if not quite standing in line for. really a very excellent drink. We don't get their beer in b'ham but I've been lucky enough to come across more than a few bottles in my travels and with very few exceptions (sorry guys your saison is awful) all the allagash beer i've had is great. Keep it up!
