Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Confluence Ale is created with a mixed fermentation; utilizing our house primary Belgian style yeast in combination with our proprietary Brettanomyces strain. The two yeast strains work in tandem creating a marriage between spice and fruit flavors that ultimately leave a lingering silky mouth feel. Confluence is brewed with a blend of both imported pilsner and domestic pale malts as well as a portion of caramel malt, resulting in a complex malty profile. Tettnang and East Kent Golding hops are added in the brew process to balance the intricate malty profile while adding a sweet and spicy citrus aroma. After fermentation, Confluence undergoes a lengthy aging process in stainless steel tanks to enhance the flavors. Prior to bottling, it is dry hopped with a Glacier hops, providing a pleasant balance of aromas.

This bottle was from June of 2015 bottling. It pour a pale golden color with a slightly hoppy aroma. There was a large airy white head in my tulip glass. A nice sharp crisp taste with a great mouth feel. I really enjoy all aspects of this great beer and hope to get another couple of bottles to see how it cellars.

Dark gol to light amber color. Modest haze. Small head but there are plenty of streaks on the glass.

Berries, alcohol and cream come to mind when smelling this beer. I also note some tartness.

This starts with a grainy pale malt flavor--a bit sour with a dash of cream. The swallow becomes bitter with non-descriptive hops. The aftertaste is is equal parts bitter and sour. This leans to the carbonation in regards to the mouthfeel. I'm not as enamored as some, but I like it.

Wispy, large snow white head, billowing and huge from the Brett. Pale lemon yellow brew, surprisingly cloudy.

Musty and slightly tart aroma; hints of lemon and flowers struggle to find balance against musty Brett and sweet, sugary Belgian house yeast. Malts are grainy and wheat-like on the nose.

Flavor follows: it's funky in a slightly tart, very rustic kind of way. Only slightly sweet, with a light bit of citrus, all balanced against a notable Brett presence.

Very lively mouthfeel, active enough to prevent you from really savoring it in the mouth for long. Very silky smooth and nearly chewy on the palate. Soft.

This beer is extremely reminiscent of GI Sofie, as well as the more rustic HF saisons. I have a feeling the rating would be at least .25 higher if you slapped a HF label on it; it's perhaps a touch below a solid HF saison, but only a touch.

2+ year old bottle for review.
