Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.70%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Avancé is a strong, sour ale with aromas of strawberry preserves and toasted oak. Berries and more oak continue in the flavor, which concludes with a warm, sweet finish. The beer is brewed with multiple sugars including molasses, date sugar, white cane sugar, and dark rock candi. It’s then fermented with three different yeast strains and aged in oak bourbon barrels for a year with Lactobacillus and Pediococcus. After transferring the beer to stainless we add one pound per gallon of fresh, locally picked strawberries and age it for another six months.

what a sensational beverage this is. nothing like it out there. a strong wild beer brewed with molasses and aged on strawberries in bourbon barrels. its insanely complex and delicious. i usually dont care much for strawberry in beer, it always seems sweet and artificial, distracting, more juice than beer, but thats not the case here at all. this has a wonderful aroma of the slightly tart little wild strawberries that grow no bigger than a blueberry, and the acidity and wood properties balance out any jammy sweetness that might take over in their absence. i think most of the molasses has been fermented, i suppose there is that raw unrefined sugar thing happening in the middle for a moment, but i suspect its been added more as a booze spike than as a flavor. it sort of marries in with the range of malts here, adding depth and roundness to it. not a dark beer, not a pale beer, its sort of muddy water looking, hazy and heady, maybe a touch of pink from the fruit if i look hard enough. tons of wood, less bourbon than expected, but the fruit and the whiskey together are amazing. vanilla for sure, toffee, shortcake, and then a great mix of lacto acidity with notes of lemon and orange peel, and bretty funk that shows the maturity of this thing. about as layered as they come, and one of the best allagash beers there is. these guys are just incredible, i wish their beer came out to colorado...

Smells like a dentists' office, but tastes amazing. I love the bite this beer has.

Enjoyed this in the tasting room at the brewery. This is a very well balanced sour with strawberry leading the way. Unlike the M. Rosa, the sour is not overpowering and the back finishes with a slight and welcomed bit of salt. M. Rosa is overpowered by it. Easy to drink with a bit of a pucker.

Poured from draft into a goblet.

Look - pours a reddish brown color. Light just barely makes it all the way through.

Smell - Oak, funk, sour strawberries. Also get an out of place smell quite clearly... Smells like plastic, not sure if it's the line or the beer.

Taste - Definitely lots of strawberries! But it's not a fresh strawberry taste, tastes closer to an overripe, slightly mushy strawberry. Oak, not much bourbon, lightly acidic. As I drink the sour mellows and a slight smokiness comes out, presumably from the barrel.

Feel - Medium body, very light carbonation. Tart, but not puckering.

Overall - Has nice individual flavors, but something just doesn't quite mesh when everything is combined. The sour profile could use some tweaking IMO and the body would benefit from some more bubbles. Despite the somewhat negative focus, I enjoyed reviewing this one. Fun beer

Pours dirty amber. Cap, weak lacing.

Oak, brett, funk, lemon.

Sweet and malty, sharp fruit pang, vanilla. Odd undertone.

Thick smooth mouthfeel. Low carb.

Not the best sour Ive had, could use some tweaking, has an odd lacto (I assume) presence that is off putting.

Outstanding beer with a funky, sour, smokey and fruity profile. Wtf? But it works. The establishment was too dark to be able to discern the color, but no matter - this beer is all about the taste. Sour, tart, slightly sweet malt, bitter body and nice lingering creaminess from the bourbon barrels. Starts off sour fruit and finishes with a mellow, smokey vanilla with hints of wood. Wild combo that works well.

Seems there are bad bottles and good bottles. Great authentic strawberry aroma. As it warmed to room temperature, I did get a touch of a smokey / plastic scent but it was obscured at cooler temps. Touch of red wine vinegar and lots of oak.

Poured from a 375ml bottle (bottled on 7-14-16), dark pinkish orange under a lively half-inch thick slightly off-white head which fades to the rim and leaves a few spots. Aroma is fresh strawberry jam, oak and some funk. Flavor is tart, tannic, strawberries, oak, aged wood and mild sweetness for balance. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Finishes tart and fruity.
