Coolship Resurgam is a blend of both old and young unfruited spontaneous beer. The name comes from the motto of our fair city, Portland, Me. It means "I shall rise again". Coolship Resurgam won a Silver medal at the 2010 GABF.

One of the prettiest beers I've seen, brilliant hazy gold, impeccable head retention, some lacing, nice stream of bubbles.

Aromas of lemon, hayfield, oak, white wine particularly notes of peach, pineapple and Apple. Very light aroma overall.

Taste leads with a delicate lemon tart, a nice light tartness that's not puckering or overpowering. A little bready wheat, funk, oaky wine, peach, tart pineapple, golden delicious apples, lightly floral as it lingers. Light sweetness and tannic bitterness.

Medium bodied, very smooth, lively but soft carbonation, dry.

Excellent sour, probably the best in look and mouthfeel I've had. Incredibly delicate and nuanced but full of flavor and aroma.

Bottle opened with an assertive 'pop'. Not as powerful as a bottle of champagne, but a noticeably more amount of pressure/carbonation compared to other similarly packaged Allagash.

A: Golden orange...slight hazy Fluffly white head. Very distinct individual bubbles in the head...beautiful! It's like a mosaic of tiny bubbles. Nice amount of effervescence throughout.

S: I seem to keep going back to champagne, but it smells like my nose is stuck in a bottle of PJ. Or maybe a barrel of PJ after it was sent to be bottle conditioned. Oaky, funky, damp. Prominently saturated oak with a subtle brightness behind it.

T: Oh my. Effervescence for days. Keeps the flavor dancing around the tongue. It's like a champagne bomb! Tons of oak, grape skin, green apple. Hint of bitterness like lemon pith. Dank. But bright. Dry. But rich. Blackberries? A nice mineral spiciness peppercorns. A little banana funk that is a very familiar taste for fellow Allagash enthusiasts.

O: Hands down the greatest Allagash beer I've ever tasted. Hands down one of the greatest american wild ales I've ever tasted.(i use that term to keep this ambiguous, but i honestly put this up there with 3f, cantillon, hill farmstead). Hands down one of the best beers I've had period. I want a magnum of this and a flight of oysters. And I don't want to share. Allagash has been around for a long time now, and they truly make some of the best traditional beers in the Country. I'm not well versed enough to compare it to the world, but the times I've had Cantillon and 3F...this is right there with them. Pears, apples, grape skins, lemon. Seems like every sip of this presents a new flavor. Wood, peppercorns, grains, wheat. Goodness gracious. Needs to be in a 750 format so I can be a gueuze glutton. A beer that wants to be quaffed but deserves to be sipped. Truly a conundrum.

A: Gold with some orange tones and straw around the edges - hazy, but probably would have been clear had I poured the bottle more carefully - large, creamy, white head, slowly fades to a solid, medium-sized cap that apparently lasts forever, leaves blobs and streaks of lacing

S: Sour, funky, oak - a nice punch of sour, with some bright, lemon-like acidity and some damp, musty-cellar like lactic sour - some barnyard funk - some yeast aromas, pepper, clove, fruity esters - some bright green apple and white grape - lots of oak, like a damp plank of wood - some light sweetness at the base

T: Even more sour than I would have guessed - plenty of straight-up, puckering, lemon acidity - sharp bite - some damp, musty wood, and lactic flavors - some Brett-like dried berry skin flavor - sharp, tart green apple and grapes - SweeTarts - some minerality, touches of spice, pepper - lots of oak in the flavor and lingers on in the aftertaste - some very light sweetness and touches of grain and wheat that hold everything together

M: Medium body, above-average carbonation, smooth in some regard but mostly sour and sharp

O: You know I know, how hard you try (to get it right, all of the time)

I've had this bottle in my fridge for a few months and another sitting in my closet for a few years. I guess I was waiting for something akin to a celebration. Well, this is my 1200th review on BA, so that's something. This is about as good as a Gueuze that anyone will ever brew outside of Belgium. Bravo, Allagash.

Most recently tasted Resurgam in a side-by-side with Duck Duck Gooze and JK Spon Methode Gueze as part of our Xmas eve tasting. CS Resurgam was the hands-down winner and remains the American benchmark for the style, standing head to head with Cantillon, Drie, and Tilquin.

This beer is fantastic in every possible way. Beautiful appearance. Aroma is classic gueze: minerally lemon rind, a touch of barnyard funk and musty basement.
Flavor follows the aroma, along with moderate, mostly lactic, sourness and just enough oak.
Wonderful stuff.

They hit the mark with this beer and really dialed it in around 2014. It still stands alone as the only American beer to nail the spontaneous gueze style...though JK may give them a run for their money in a couple years as they dial in their Spon.

The beer pours a quite clear, straw-like color into the big tulip. A brief crest of lively bubbles that quickly falls to almost nothing. I get lemon on the nose and a crisp note of Granny Smith apple, that tart, fresh smell of sour apple. And the reminds me of walking the woods on a damp day. Delightfully funky and woody. Almost a mustiness to it, but pleasantly so if that makes sense. A little bit of bread and a vague spiciness.

The "yummy" a valid word for describing the taste? It is woody and has the tingle of tannins, almost but not quite smoky to my palate. Hay-like green notes, lemon and the pithy bit of the lemon rind adds a sharpness, the apple note is there to me, nicely and assertively tart. Waves of flavor, some that I can't quite figure out, yet amazingly balanced.

The feel is light, dry, crisp, and super-clean considering everything that is happening. I would say almost like a champagne feel, but smoother. The flavors just dance over the tongue, linger a little, and leave me ready for another sip. Delicate and ephemeral.

This one's a keeper - wish I had more than the one.

This one has a lot of great attributes that you normally only find in lambic. Most certainly one of the best spontaneously fermented AWA's I've ever had.

Funky and sour. Stone fruits and lemon zest. A little medicinal. Fairly dry.

Lighter bodied. Nice carbonation.

Solid sour. Very enjoyable.

What an amazing gueze. lemon flavors (almost like preserved lemons) lingers for days and then the light buttery cracker comes through. what a joy having this on a summer evening (saved a few bottles for that).

This one pours a golden straw yellow, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.

Smells like lemon, hard minerals, cheese rind, lactic acid, rotten citrus, and bitter oak.

This is absolutely wonderful, and the best Allagash beer I've had to date. It's neck and neck with Bullfrog Grrrz for the best American-style rendition of a gueuze. It's got a really outstanding level of complexity, with bitter oak, a sort of chalky mineral like taste, lemon rind, cheese rind, grapefruit flesh, leather, and many other things I can barely put my finger/tongue on. This is stunningly good.

This is medium bodied, light and spritzy, and fairly sour in the mouthfeel. It's got a very active level of carbonation.

This is a praise-worthy achievement in wild beer. As close to traditional gueuze as you're going to get from an American brewer.

Served in a traditional Gueuze tumbler

The bottle opened with a very loud pop. A bubbly, inch-tall crown of crackling, off-white fizz capped the slightly hazed, pale golden-amber liquid. The crown quickly fell to a thin, flimsy film. No lacing whatsoever.

The nose was incredibly musty and funky. This beer smelled more complex and intense than most true Belgian Gueuzes. Super oaky and woodsy. The barrel notes came through big time. Loads of barnyard funkiness and horse blanket character. Somewhat wheaty. Crisp, citrusy and bright. Bit of lemony tartness. Overall, really interesting.

The flavor profile was just as impressive as the aroma. Uber woody. Loads of oaky barrel notes and tannins. Super tart and lemony yet balanced. Good amount of lemon pith. Slightly bitter. Really crisp and bright. Wheaty. A bit musty. The beer finished bone dry with lingering notes of oaky tannins and lemon rind. Amazingly complex and incredibly well balanced.

The mouthfeel was flawless. Ultra crisp and light on the palate. Pillowy soft and almost cloud-like. The beer contained a fine yet spritzy, Champagne-like effervescence. Super plush and frothy. Ridiculously smooth.

Although not a true Gueuze due to terrior, Allagash's Coolship Resurgam is one of the best beers I have ever tried in this style and one of the most impressive beers overall. The blend of 1, 2 and 3 year old spontaneously fermented beer really came though in this Gueuze's amazing range of deep musty oakiness and bright citrus notes. This is pure magic in a bottle.

Poured gently at 50°F from a 375ml bottle (bottled on 19Jan15) into a tulip. Consumed on 19Jan16.
LOOK: Pours with a fingers worth of white foam that dissipates into a quarter fingers worth within 1 minute and 20 seconds. Straw yellow in color with a high amount of cloudiness. Medium and large rising bubbles are present in moderate amounts. Lacing is thick and subtle.
SMELL: Strong aromas of sour green apple acidity and balsamic vinegar combine with mild hay, white wine, tobacco, and earthy yeast aromas along with subtle oak, peach, and apricot aromas.
TASTE: Strong sour green apple acidity and hay flavors first strike the palate and are immediately followed by mild white wine and subtle balsamic vinegar flavors. Mild tobacco flavors and subtle peach and apricot flavors continue this incredible taste symphony as sour green apple flavors grow stronger. Subtle earthy yeast and oak flavors enter lastly as all previous flavors persist.
FEEL: Medium-bodied and highly carbonated. Goes down rough due to the carbonation. Finishes with a very strong dryness. Sourness from the beer almost stings the tongue. An inexperienced sour beer drinker would probably not like the sour levels in this one.
NOTE: What an incredible Gueze from Allagash. I'm not sure what aging this for a year has done since I haven't had a fresh one, but this was scrumptious. The mouthfeel really brought down the overall rating. This was terribly dry for my personal liking.

Had a 2012 of this. Small pour, quickly disappeared head, but very carbed. Completely blew me away as to how much Cantillon-like this beer was, just ever slightly more tart than Cantillon Classic Gueuze.

This is the best gueuze made in America. Better than Beatification. Lemony, custard like nose with a pear and tart grain after thought. The taste follows, but is so much more complex. Mouthfeel couldn't be any better. Not too thin, spot on carbonation. Seek this out.

Pours a translucent orange with thin white head and minimal retention. The nose has some nice deep funk working with heavy wet oak, notes of brett, and lemon lemon zest. The flavor matches the nose with a moderate level of tartness, a well balanced funk, and a crisp citrusy finish. The mouthfeel is spot on as it has very high carbonation which makes for a spritzy feel and matches the tartness nicely. This makes for a refreshing finish. Overall, this is a nice and authentic tasting gueuze.

This is my first Coolship series beer. Definitely the best I've had to date from Allagash and has at least a fighting chance against the great Belgian Gueuzes. Pleasing gold in the glass. The nose is understated funk and lemons. Flavor of citrus, pith, oak and a little funk. It's a classy affair and perhaps a too little well-behaved. Not quite as bold and complex as your Cantillons or 3Fs. Miss those wild horse, cheese rind and wet hay notes that keep you on your toes. Still, a really nice beer.

Poured from a caged and corked into a Brooklyn Brewery tulip glass.

Color is clear gold with amber highlights.

Aroma is funky fruit. A slight earthiness is noticeable at the end.

Taste is tart with sweet fruit notes a wonderful dry finish kinda like a rich funky cheese.

Give me more, and more and more

By way of DantheMan. 2015 vintage. 375ml corked and caged bottle into Hill Farmstead stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a foamy, 1.5 finger white head with good retention. Beer is a clear goldenrod that reveals ample carbonation. Lacing is stringy and patchy with good stick. For a gueuze, this is really good.

Nose is surprisingly subdued. Hints of tart lemon, yeast, hay and a bit of woodiness. Smells good but its barely there.

Opens tart lemon zest, hay, oak and peat. Some woodiness in the middle is mixed with a light hop bitterness. Citrus and lemony tartness throughout with a light fruity sweetness towards the end. Finish is a touch bitter with a clean, woody aftertaste. I'm pretty impressed by this.

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly and lively in the mouth and goes down soft. Finish rather clean with a puckering, dry aftertaste. Solid.

For an American interpretation of the style, this is very good... if a bit young. The funk is present as is the wood and hay presence. However, there's a bit of bitterness that is still detracting from the experience. Given enough time, this'll get better and better.

375 mL bottle poured into a wine glass.

Pours exceptionally fizzy and spritzy, but the head is quick to dissipate. What remains is a filmy lace over the body. The body reminds me of a Helles beer, blonde and golden with a bit of a malted hue, but still displaying superb clarity. 5

The smell is like funky peach my brain says. My brain also tells me that this aroma reminds me of some the great 3F beers I've had before. There's some earthiness, tartness, tanginess, and even a saline-like smell. Something suggest pineapple too. I will say though, the flavors here don't quite pop; I have to search a bit. 4.25

More tart and less funky than the nose and the peach/pineapple flower shines. Also getting some crisp apple type of flavor and a lingering earthiness and floral yeast flavor that is a nice exit. 4.5

As I must always point out: NO VINEGAR! Love it when a wild doesn't have that quality. This has a slight acidity and tartness and a bit of yeasty, floral funk. It drinks quite refreshingly with a bubbly intro that leads to a dryer, crisper finish. 4.25

Great stuff. Maybe not as clean as my favorite from 3F but still pretty exceptional in the wild world.

App- Out of the bottle this pours a light hay color with a yellow to orange center. Even a bit of tan mixed in there. Small bubbles form quickly with about a 1-1/2 finger head that was fast fading and went down to a small pond layer. No cling or lace, but none really expected.

Smell- Has a lot going on. When I take a first sniff, I get a lot of lemon and some sweetness behind it. Not cloying sweet but not what I was expecting. When it gets a little warmer I get more of the hay with a small funk behind it. I pick up some flora notes I cant place with a little bit of fresh oak behind it as well.

Taste- To me this was a bit of a odd Gueuze. Didnt have that normal european taste. This was for of an american twist. It was good, just not what I was expecting. This had a very tart flavor with a small spice note I couldnt place. The oak is there with a white wine flavor behind it. The flora creates a dual flavor for me with hay and a small funk.

Mouth- This was more where this shined. Light, tart, some acid behind it with a nice peppery and floral bite. The oak comes through with nice remaining acidity but doesnt require the tums. A lighter body with a smooth carbonation. A small prickly feel as well.

Drink- Its very good. I can see how its highly rated. It for me was an American Gueuze and I am okay with that. Very happy to have landed and drank a bottle with #properglassware. Now to track down a Red to compare.

Poured from a 12.7 bottle into an Allagash tulip. Purchased at the brewery this past weekend.

Pours a super hazy, golden body with a big fluffy white head that reduces slowly, leaving a little lacing and chunky retention.

Big, potent aromas come through, barrel/oak make a big appearance here, as well as musty wood, funk, sharp acetic and a hint of vinegar. Citrus, hay, and slight grain are all also present on the nose.

On the tongue comes super tart citrus, tons of oak, hay, funky barnyard, sour apple, followed by cedar and a sour wild aftertaste that leaves the teeth chalky. Very tasty. Mouthfeel is medium with medium-high carbonation, easy sipper.

Delicious.. balanced.. complex, and one of the most elegant displays of oak aging I've experienced in a sour. Recommended.

Green corked and caged 12.7 oz bottle. 2015 batch. Sampled on May 1, 2015.

The pour is a milky orange-yellow color with a short-lived white foamy head. It eventually dissolves and leaves some lacing in the glass.

The green bottle already made me suspicious but this was a fresher batch acquired at the brewery and in some respects skunkiness and sour can go hand in hand. No skunk but plenty of sour, tart, overripe fruit characters. A little rain-soaked wood.

Medium to above medium body. Smooth and thick texture.

The taste is sour and tart but its intensity does not make me pucker up like some wild ales or sours can. This is one of my least favorite styles but Allagash found a way to balance it out.

A very good sour, probably one of the best that Allagash has to offer. It lacks just a little bit of something to make it world class in my book, but still something to seek out if you are in the Portland area.

@ Quintessence - amber,yellow color with a fizzy small, fast vanishing head.

Decent aromas of fruit, berries and apple, lambic yeast, a bit wooden.

Hay, grass, wood, apples and grapes - not as acidic as the Cantillon Geuzes, lacks a little depth, but has a fantastic balance. Soft lively carbonation, adding to the refreshing character.

This is a great take on a wild ale. Out of all the allagash wild ales this is near the top. Nice funk while not overly sour. I have one left and will be saving this for a while.
