Very Good
Midnight BrettMidnight Brett
Notes: Midnight Brett is chocolate brown in color, brewed with 2-Row, Midnight wheat, raw wheat and rye malt. It was hopped with a blend of Perle, Glacier and Simcoe hops. The beer was fermented with our house strain of Brettanomyces in stainless tanks. The finished beer has the aroma and flavor of fresh berries, sour cherries and a slight roasted character. The finish is pleasantly tart and fruity making this beer very drinkable.

Bottled 10/16/2013.

A: Pours a very dark brown with some red highlights. Tall, fizzy, effervescent light brown head. Great head retention and big fluffy chunks of lacing.

S: Sour fruits mainly. Berries, cherries? A bit wheaty. Tart cherries.

T: Not as sour as the aroma. Lots of tart dark berries. Raspberries, blackberries in particular. Cherries for sure. Get some mild chocolate in there to help sweeten it and balance the sourness - especially towards the finish. A bit earthy too, again towards the finish and the aftertaste. Wheaty aftertaste with some oak (is this barrel aged? I don't think so, I must be mistaking oak for something else).

M: Medium bodied, smooth, lightly tart.

O: Interesting sour. Sour berries and some roasted malt. It's borderline like a light sour stout. But more grainy than you'd expect from a sour stout. Hard to define, doesn't really conform to any standard or have any comparisons that I can make easily.

On tap at the Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

Pours a dark, deep black, with a half inch head, and not a whole lot of lacing.

Smells like dark malt, some chocolate, and juicy sour cherries.

The cherry flavor in this one is really unexpected, but really quite tasty. The roasted malt gives off a chocolate flavor that really brings to mind chocolate covered cherries. This is mildly sour- the dark malt tampers a lot of it.

This one has a deceivingly light body, with a low amount of carbonation, and a crisp tart mouthfeel. I expected it to be slightly creamy, given the look, but it's not, which is cool.

The first dark sour I've really liked, maybe I'll actually like sour stouts someday.

Good not great and a slight disappointment at a high price point ($15). Teeters along potential greatness but lacking across the board on slight muted flavor and feel

Pour dark violet with foamy dirty brown head that was a inch or two
Smell has a bit of musty dark fruit (cherry, date) not strong
Taste similar to nose but when something has Brett in the name I was expecting bold farmhouse funk and if just wasn't there. Profile lacked depth
Feel medium and nice rolling carb but couldn't save it
