Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.60%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer is a blend of five different beers fermented in a mix of both bourbon and wine barrels. Brettanomyces, pediococcus and lactobacillus were all utilized to create a myriad of flavors in this unique copper colored beer. The aroma is defined by the presence of the Brett resulting in both a crusty bread and fruit character. The tartness works well with the light oak and distinct citrus flavors, which are followed by a gentle maltiness and dry finish.

Bottled 5/17/13, been sitting on it a while, but should be interesting for sure.

Pours a light fizzy 1/2 finger head that fades at a med pace, light lacing, hazy sediment laden but semi clear auburn orange-red color.

Nose like an oude bruin, nice sour malts, tart funk, plenty of lacto sour creamy funk but also Brett souring funk and a little pedio funk perhaps not as sure on that one, quite acidic, with some tart brown fruits like soured fig, and some mild vanilla oak notes.

Taste brings plenty of sour funk again, lacto creamy sticky sourness, lactic acid, plenty of acidity in general, sour malt flavors, perhaps sour mash, and some Brett souring funk, maybe pedio but less likely. A little sticky malt that attempts to get sweet but fails as it was probably attentuated a lot more in the past couple years, as the carbonation is big. Little tart fruit, almost dark cherry and fig like, touch of tingly booze mixes with the acidity for the extra tingle, and a mild toasty buttery oak lingering. Finish sticky flemmy acidic, more tart cherry fig fruits, and some sour funk lingering.

Mouth is med to bit heavier bod, plenty of acidity, little tingly booze, and nice fluffy carb.

Overall not bad, def an oude bruin like style, nice funk and sourness, nice acidity, malts are OK, barrel notes are lighter but a nice touch, a decent sour but not at the top of the line... esp for some of the incredible ones Allagash makes.

No label information. Merveilleux Ale is brewed in the style of an American Wild Ale aged in oak barrels. Available in 12.7 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 12.7 oz. bottle to a tulip glass.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy foam head of a pale biscuity white tone over a copper-amber body with ample lively carbonation. Retention is very good and lacing is moderate and droopy. 4

(Smell) Dry, fruity and funky aroma over a malt base of crystallized caramels, bread crusts, syrupy fruits and pale malts. Notes of bourbon, vanilla and red grape must are also evident. Potency is moderate. 3.75

(Taste) Tangy, clean delivery up front with a dry bread malt, cherry juice and apricot undertones with a sharp, drying finish. Enhanced dryness with minimal distracting tannins comes from oak aging, red wine and subtle vanilla are the most notable contributions. Enjoyable and sharply tart, the remaining flavor keeps very concealed. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly residual and fully dry. Carbonation is modest, generating a medium frothiness and a mild crisp finish. Body is shy of medium for the style, medium overall. Balance is slightly tangy, tart and dry over sweet. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) There is a great deal of tartness and flavor character in Merveilleux, although the flavor range falls a bit short of my expectations, with only a bit of malt and fruit character coming through, and a lot of tangy souring flavor prevailing. While I love a good sour ale, one that steals the show obscures the subtleties I appreciate in the usual sour ale. 3.75

Poured from a 375ml bottle (bottled 17May13) into a tulip.
LOOK: Pours with a half finger's worth of off-white foam that halves itself after 25 seconds. Rising bubbles are medium-sized and subtle in quantity. Copper in color with a high amount of cloudiness. Lacing is thin and moderate, but stays in the glass.
SMELL: Has mild aromas of earthy yeast, sour yeast, oak, and tobacco that entangle with hints of hay, apple, and pear aromas.
TASTE: Strong sour yeast and eathy yeast flavors along with mild oak eneter initially. Mild tobacco flavors enter immediately after the initial flavors. Subtle hay, apple, and pear flavors finish off this nice symphony of flavors as all previous flavors persist except for both yeast flavors, which fade to mild.
FEEL: Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Goes down rough. Finishes with a moderate dryness. Tartness from the beer playfully agitates the tongue.
NOTE: Another great brew from Allgash.

Pour is hazy glowing copper with a tight tan head. Nose is meaty and fleshy with a fairly present barrel note. There are some hints of vanilla from the barrel with a decent sour cherry in back. Very Flanders red esq. Taste is similar, a bit less fleshy with oak and vanilla cascading over sour cherry. Brett is strong especially through the finish. Strong carbonation on a light body and fairly dry finish.
