Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Lobster Ale is a copper "Red" ale with a medium hop flavor and aroma. It offers all the qualities of "Red Ale" with subtle levels of fruity-ester flavor and hint of caramel. A slight yeast haze and chill gives Lobster Ale a clear. foamy. rich head. Belfast Bay Brewing Co, is near tile Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia known for it Red Ale breweries.

When Pat Mullen's wife suggested that a brewery from Maine should make a beer called Lobster Ale. a user-friendly red ale seemed to be the perfect brew, We scaled back on the heavily hopped formulas our neighbors produce. We then added slight amounts of black and dark crystal grains to produce a smooth. medium hopped brew. The result is a very flavorful and drinkable red ale with an extremely smooth finish.

L — Pours a well-filtered medium amber with a one-finger off-white head produced with moderately aerated pour. Great retention and some lacing
S — Caramel, barley malts, touch of coffee/chocolate(?)
T — Barley malts, caramel, hint of grassy hoppiness, sugar, and nutmeg
F — Medium+ carb, medium- mouthfeel. Semi-dry. Crisp, with a lasting, semi-sweet finish
O — Great Maine coast brew to enjoy with a seafood meal. Cleanses the palate wonderfully and has enough body without being overpowering. Not amazing by any means, but one of my favorite regionals simply because of the nostalgia I have associated with it

12 oz. bottle poured into a tumbler style pint glass.

It pours a clear, rich reddish-brown and is capped with a thin half inch off white head.

The nose somewhat weak, just caramel malt and mineral aromas. Decent bitterness up front with a fairly heavy, but not overly sweet caramel malt character in the back. It finishes smooth and clean with a delayed bite from the carbonation and some hop bitterness coming after. Body and carbonation are both middling.

Overall not memorable but certainly drinkable.

This beer pours a clear deep copper color with a very small off white head that disappears very quickly and leaves a few whispy lines of lacing behind.

The smell is very mild and bland. Muted notes of caramel and toffee are the only notes present.

Taste is similar, but improved by the fruity esters that accompany the caramel and toffee malt flavors present in the smell. Still fairly mild though.

The feel is very light and thin with low carbonation. Not much to it at all, but it does go down easy.

Overall this beer is ok. Not something I will choose to revisit, but not offensive either. A bit malty for my liking, but since the flavors are rather mild it doesn't come across as a "malt bomb."
