Lobster Ale is a copper "Red" ale with a medium hop flavor and aroma. It offers all the qualities of "Red Ale" with subtle levels of fruity-ester flavor and hint of caramel. A slight yeast haze and chill gives Lobster Ale a clear. foamy. rich head. Belfast Bay Brewing Co, is near tile Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia known for it Red Ale breweries.

When Pat Mullen's wife suggested that a brewery from Maine should make a beer called Lobster Ale. a user-friendly red ale seemed to be the perfect brew, We scaled back on the heavily hopped formulas our neighbors produce. We then added slight amounts of black and dark crystal grains to produce a smooth. medium hopped brew. The result is a very flavorful and drinkable red ale with an extremely smooth finish.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle.

L - Attractive medium brown with lots of red color; crystal clear. Head is light tan, thick, fluffy and persistent.

S - Aromas are dominated by specialty malt, with strong brown sugar and caramel notes. Hops are in the background but are definitely there.

T - Strong flavors of caramel malt, brown sugar and raisins. Other flavors have a tough time breaking through. Yeast does not contribute anything. Hops are just a low woody, earthy note.

F - Thin body. Very low carbonation. No alcohol presence. Hops bitterness is low to moderate.

O - Overall this is an OK beer. I find the body too thin and lacking in carbonation as the biggest flaws, but the aromas and flavors are too one-dimensional with a massive level of crystal malt. Some more malt or hops backbone would improve this beer, in my opinion..

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into IPA glass.

Appearance: Rich reddish-brown with decent off-white head.

Smell: Caramel. dark fruit, English hops.

Taste: Lots of fruity esters, caramel, and a light roastiness. Some light English hops and nuts on the finish. Lingering aftertaste.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, light to medium body. Not as dry as I prefer.

Overall: Not what I think of as an American Red Ale. Apparently it is modeled after Red Ales made in the Atlantic provinces of Canada, which probably makes this more of an English style. Pretty good but has a weak finish.

On draught at Oyster Bar @ Grand Central NYC- pour is copper color with little carbonation and little head; no hint of malts/hops or other grains. The initial sip is hop bitterness that quickly softens to semi-sweet on backside.

Pours ruby red (not quite cooked lobster red) with a fizzy head that immediately disappears. No lacing.

Not much to speak of on the nose. Really smells like an older malt bill. I do not get anything in this description - maybe it's my palate.

It has a bit of hop bitterness but not much malt sweetness balancing it out. It's more of a copper/iron/mineral flavor profile overall. Not a fan.

Had this on draft at Kennebec Tavern in Bath Maine. Nice reddish amber color. Not getting a lot on the nose. Taste is ok, very run-of-the-mill amber ale. Nothing to distinguish this from your average amber ale. Glad I got it at a reduced price during happy hour.

For a red ale, this is a good beer. Has a great reddish hue and pours a slight head which is light. Mild lacing. I find the aroma to be of the same flavors I taste. Caramel, toffee, whiskey and oak. Crisp drink and small bite on the palate. Overall a good beer, but nothing that knocks my socks off.

Look: Dark amber toward copper in color. Transparent and watery in appearance. Pours with a thick layer of foam the the surface of the beer that disappears quickly without a trace; no real head. Upon close inspection there were some small bubbles present; however the beer overall appeared flat.

Smell: Mostly smelled sweet malt mixed with faint aroma of grain. Decent.

Taste: Lots of malt, slight bit of grain with a slight hoppy finish. Acceptable, but unremarkable.

Feel: Thinner side of medium in terms of body. Slight fizz from the mild carbonation. Mildly dry finish. In general refreshing.

Overall: Overall there is nothing wrong with this ale; it was fine to drink. I found it unremarkable and not memorable. With so many better beers on the market today, this ale was kind of boring in comparison. If someone served me this, I could certainly drink it. However I could not see me purchasing this ale in the future.

Smooth, very drinkable but non-distinct. Definitely brewed for the middle of the road, don't believe it will standout in an amber drinkers bevy of choices. Color is saison like, hazy non-uniform, with very slight caramel sweetness on the nose.

Dark amber color. Clear. Small head but there's plenty of tiny spots of lace.

Caramelized malt aroma--semisweet. Light floral hop nose.

Leans slightly to the hop side. The malt is well toasted and mildly sweet. The hop is featured in the swallow. The aftertaste is more of the same. Full body with a decent level of bubbles.

Dark copper body w/lingering, persistent thin head. Strong caramel and toffee aromas. Taste much like the aroma w/light hop bitterness. Medium-heavy body; sweet w/o cloyingness.

A wonderful, malt-centric beer. Big yet very approachable.

p-one finger head

a-white head that settles down to form a white film on top. Dark golden amber but more on the brown/orange side than it is red.

s-caramel with a burnt/roast kind of smell

t-first impression matches the nose with the burnt taste, which almost reminds more of a scotch ale. On the back end there is caramel sweetness and a bready malt.

m-light/medium texture and light carbonation.

o-a pretty good beer thats worth a try. Reminds me a bit of a scotch ale with its burnt characteristic, but thats certainly not a bad thing.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Smith English tulip glass

a: Gorgeous clear dark amber, an offwhite head faded to patchy surface foam and spotty lacing.

s: Mild caramel malt.

t: Slightly fruity bitterness over caramel malt. Rather sweet finish.

m: Light to moderate and tangy.

o: A tasty brew which is probably best called by the rather broad names on the label and here, "Amber/Red Ale.". I did save it for a lobster dinner and it went well with it. Also a pretty enjoyable sipper which becomes a little more caramel malty as it warms.

A: The beer is a light reddish brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains caramelized malts, citrus and some hops.

T: The taste is decently balanced with flavors of caramel and citrus and a good burst of hops bitterness. There’s a hearty malt character. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, slightly sticky finish.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, I could drink a few of these and it’s an all right beer to stick with for an evening if you want something with a little substance that isn’t very heavy, but overall it just seemed ordinary to me.

A- a dark copper color with a nice foamy white head.
S-very bready yeast smell very reminiscent of shipyards old thumper, I'm thinking ringwood yeast.
T- bready as in the aroma. There is hop presence mellowed out by a nice malty flavor. I get some Carmel as well
O- very drinkable ale. Tasty and enjoyable.

Pours a reddish copper with a finger of head that dissipated rather quickly but left some nice lacing nonetheless. The nose is bready. This offering has the basic malty flavor of most decent reds and a semi-dry finish. This is certainly a respectable beer, but there is definitely nothing special here.

Had on tab at the refinery in Tampa, FL very decent ale easy to drink complemented the burgers and fries that I had for dinner. As far as Red ales you could do worse is easy to drink, more of a session beer than a showstopper. Flavors varie between sweet caramel and slight hops.

Had on-tap, poured into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber with nice clarity and two-finger tan head that disappears quickly, leaving nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: Malty and slightly sweet with some caramel and spicy hoppiness.

Taste: Definitely can taste the malt backbone but also some citrus fruits and a good amount of hops. A little bit of caramel, likely from the malt.

Mouthfeel: More to the body than I'd expect but nice creaminess and solid carbonation. A fairly easy drinking beer and smooth.

Overall: I liked this one and would definitely try it again. A nice easy drinking amber that is sessionable and a good interpretation of the style.

Served in a bottle at Texas Arizona in Hoboken, NJ

A: Pours a crystal clear deep amber in color with slightly more than moderate amounts of visible carbonation and some garnet red highlights. The beer has a finger tall dense creamy light beige head that reduces to a large patch of very thin film in the center of the glass and a thin ring at the edges. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light aromas of toasted malts with just a touch caramel and light fruit sweetness.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of toasted malts along with some caramel malts. Light amounts of fruit (apple) sweetness and some caramel sweetness. Minimal amounts of grassy hop flavors and almost no discernable bitterness.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: This beer is easy to drink because of the lighter body, low ABV, and pleasant (yet lighter) flavors. Enjoyable and sessionable.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a a deep amber hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured a full toasted malt, burnt caramel and diactyl.

The taste mirrored the aroma oncall front with an additional light herbal hop.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style with a suprisingly dry finish.

Overall a decent malt forward red ale.

poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass, served at fridge temp.

nice amber with a head that is colored halfway between offwhite and washed out sandstone. nice lacing.

aroma; a pleasing orchard fruit sweetness lays over the pale malt, hint of some hops.

mouthfeel is very good.

taste: moderately malty with a faint fruitiness and some nice hoppy bitterness at the end. there is a slight 'unfinished' quality to the aftertaste that is slightly rough.

Notes: a pretty good beer that seems halfway between an English Bitter and an Irish Red Ale. This is definitely worth drinking again.

Thanks to angrybabboon for the bottle. Finally fished it out of the back of the fridge.

Appearance: Pretty much clear. Slight haze. Deep, rich copper with some darker amber highlights. Head is white and drops to a small collar and wispy cap in short order. No lacing to speak of and minimal carbonation.

Smell: Solid caramel malt backbone. Nice sugary sweetness layered over some biscuity notes. A touch of citrus from the hops. More sweet than anything else. Biscuit and bread with a slight corn aroma as well. Mild toasted elements as well. Everything is very mellow.

Taste: A little more citrus than the nose. Hitting some minor grapefruit skin with a mild herbal/floral element. Biscuity, very biscuity with some caramel malt sweetness. Super light, super pale, crystal malts in the back as well. Some toasted elements give it a bit more depth. Vaguely musty with some apple core and other estery notes. Grassy.

Mouthfeel: Body runs on the lighter side of medium with a moderate, and just barely there, carbonation. Relatively clean. Easy to drink.

Overall: You would only need Lock to catch this Lobster.

Decent. Middle of the roud and drinkable. Nice and sweet with enough hop balance to keep it from being another malty sweetish mess of nothing. A bit too grassy overall with a weird floral element that doesn't quite work with the toasted malts.

A: The beer is crystal clear amber in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high dense and creamy beige head that died down but consistently left a thin coating of bubbles on the surface and edges of the glass.
S: There are light aromas of toasted malts in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of toasted malts along with some notes of caramel malts and faint hints of sweetness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied, a little airy and rather smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is rather light-bodied for an amber ale (it seems to more resemble and Irish Red Ale) so it's easy to drink and very sessionable.

Appearance: Medium amber color with a lot of copper - clear, pours with a little, off-white head, leaves some nice, spotty lacing

Smell: Caramel malts and bread - lightly toasted, lightly sweet, lightly caramelized - lightly sweet bread - some light citrus in the background - something that smells vaguely British - very mild overall, but not bad, just average

Taste: Caramel malts and crystal malts - lightly toasted, lightly cooked - malty sweetness with minimal bitterness - some light, fruity esters - some lightly and musty flavors - somewhat lacking hops

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely smooth, low carbonation, very drinkable

Overall: Not exciting, but not bad

American Amber/Red Ales vary quite wildly. Some are hoppy, some are malty, some are both... This is British. Must be the yeast. This is very drinkable, but not something to write home about.

Appearance: Dark copper color with a off white head and medium lacing.

Smell: Roasted malts and carmel.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Medium bodied and thicker feel than expected. Taste of roasted malts, carmel, with hints pine notes and some buttery characteristics.

Overall: Decent brew, went great with my seafood dinner on a crisp fall day.

355ml bottle poured into tulip 27/6/12

A clear reddish amber with some tiny particles and very few visible bubbles but a solid two fingers of light tan foam that retains well leaving a few partial rings of lace

S loads of dark toffee and bread, some herbal hops and a little iced tea

T close to the smell with more of an earthy aspect and even some faint chocolate, just a little nutty and everything I could smell's still there

M it has some body too it and good carbonation, a little slippery after the fact and a faint nutty aftertaste

O a bit of a surprise because I didn't expect all that much but it was pretty solid, not the most exciting style but I thought it was a good example of one

You can really taste the lobster, no but for real though I'd drink this again
