Our friends recently moved to Erwinna, PA, and we moved to Philadelphia so it is fun to drive up there and spend time in the countryside. There is so much history and beer along the Delaware River! I've been to New Hope and Lambertville many times; was happy to discover other towns upriver like Stockton and Frenchtown (all of them with their perfectly-preserved downtowns, fancy stores and gourmet coffee places).

The National Hotel is a refined-yet-restrained inn. You can dine and drink upstairs at the formal restaurant and bar or enjoy a beer and an appetizer downstairs at the underground cave bar, The Rathskeller. Each floor and bar has a different draft-beer menu.

Among the nine taps upstairs I've seen Ballantine’s IPA, Flying Fish, Victory, Allagash and Brooklyn, while downstairs they have six lines from the likes of Yards, Smuttynose and Oskar Blues. The taps seem to change often enough and taste fresh.

The food is good but not great and a bit expensive but not overpriced. They have some vegetarian/vegan options and, for some odd reason, Indian recipes.

I would probably not eat here often but I am always happy to enjoy a beer when I'm around the area.
