Very Good
OktoberfestOktoberfest
Notes: Märzen or Märzenbier is a lager that originated in Bavaria, and is the beer style that was traditionally served at Oktoberfest in Germany.

Kilned malts and specialty malts produce a rich, toasty aroma, with a sweet flavor, while the traditional lager fermentation produces a clean yeast profile.

Hops: Hersbrucker
Malts: Vienna, Munich, Pilsner, Caramunich

The temperature actually got down in the 60s overnight here in northwest Florida - time for a malty and amber Oktoberfest. Poured from a 16 oz. freshness dated can: very pretty amber with red highlights with a sustained and foamy off-white head.

Aromas of malt, bread and faint hops.

The malt is the star here with a solid entry that includes hints of brown bread, rye, licorice, and very faint roast in the mouthfeel; additionally, the mouthfeel is slightly chewy with a faint lingering bitterness on the palate. While the flavor is very good, this one does not invite quaffing because of its heavier body. Honestly, I would rather have Lupulin's excellent Dortmunder lager right now.

Big just offwhite head on this beer from an aggressive pour with a light copper color and see though look. Has that sweet malt I associate with a good Oktoberfest brew on the nose with some hops behind. Comes through on the flavor with an initial sweetness followed by a bready biscuit type sticky finish. Decent enough carbonation and some body, this hits the marks for me. Good stuff.

Clear dark amber body with a tan head, decent carbonation visible to the eye. Caramel malt and toast led delicate nose with bready accents. Taste is a stronger version of the nose, more biscuit than bready, floral tone hints finish. Feel is malty, smooth, crisp for the style, and has a touch of sweetness but doesn't build up too much

Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug. Canned 7/30/21, which is not that long ago, but age really doesn't hurt a beer like this.

Appearance: rich, deep copper-golden hue with a finger of frothy ivory foam atop. Looks like a touch of haze to the body, but man, that color is rich, rich, rich.

Smell: bready, malty, toasty, and biscuity. Perhaps a bit too much biscuit character for my taste, but overall, a good example of the style.

Taste: very biscuity, with some bready and nutty character as well. Relatively sweet, with a mild finishing bitterness. I understand that it is part of the style, but this is really very biscuity for my taste.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a good creaminess. Kind of surprised, really.

Overall: like I said, this beer isn't bad, but it also really isn't my jam.

16oz can. Can bottom is stamped 'CANNED 07/30/21'. Label describes this as Marzen style.
Clear, medium amber colored body. Short head on initial pour but this sticks around as a solid cap. Minor evidence of lacing.
Aroma of caramel malt with some honey sweetness.
Taste is toasted malt, with caramel and dark bread. A touch of honey sweetness and a bit of medium hop bitterness at the back half. Sweet malts continue into the aftertaste.
Solid medium mouth feel, with a touch of mineral. Very good carbonation.
Needs slightly more hops but still a good sessionable fall beer.

Appearance: Pours a clear, deep amber/bronze color with a slight orange hue. Nearly no head. SRM of 15 (3.50)

Aroma: Mild aromas of brown sugar and toast. Has some pepper and earthiness from some burnt toast afterwards to give it a nice bite. Toasty. (4.00)

Flavor: Moderate to strong flavor follows with more brown sugar with a rather strong toasty and bread flavor. Earthy with a bitter toast flavor. Hints of sour or lemon citrus sprinkled on top. A caramel and brown sugar sweetness follows. A nice earthy and bitter astrigency to balance out the sweetness. Finishes mildly sweet. (4.50)

Feel: Peppery on the palate upfront, but then evolves into a sort of sour astringency on the backend. Quite a ride and balanced overall with a nice sweet mouthfeel off the end. (4.00)

Compared to Hop and Barrel's Oktoberfest 2020 10/25/20: Pours a similar, slightly lighter color with a smaller head. Stronger aromas/flavors. More defined. More caramel and toast and astringency. More full and rounded. A better Oktoberfest in Lupulin.

Compared to Boulevard's Bob '47 Oktoberfest 10/18/21: Pours a simialr color with a milder head. Milder aromas. More toast, brown bread, brown sugar and caramel. Less lemongrass and honey. Similarly bitter, but leans cleaner and dryer. Winner: Lupulin

Compared to Lakes & Legends Oktoberfest 9/23/22: Pours a darker color, stronger aromas. More bread toast and bread malts. Less rye and Vienna malt. larger bodied and sweeter.

Compared to Portage Seasons Change 10/5/22: Pours darker, stronger aromas. More toasty, citrus, and bitter. Less smooth, sweet caramel/bread malt. Toastier and more bitter with less sweetness. Similar.

Compared to 3 Sheeps Oktoberfest 10/22: Pours lighter, milder aromas. More bread and citrus. Less toast, toasted caramel and brown sugar flavors. Similar sweetness.
10/2022: Pours lighter. Milder aromas. More earthy bread flavors. Less toasted bread and caramel. Slightly sweeter, but similar flavors. Winner: 3 Sheeps, but this is a close second.
12/2022: Pours lighter, milder aromas. More bread and honey. Less toasted caramel. Lighter and cleaner, less toasted.

Compared to Revolution Oktoberfest 2/2023: Pours far darker, stronger aromas. More rich brown sugar, caramel mlat

Compared to Falling Knife Sommersend 10/2022: Pours a darker color, stronger aromas. More rich bread, brown sugar, bread spice, and toasty flavors. Darker and sweeter with more flavor. Winner: Lupulin

Compared to Breckenridge Oktoberfest 10/2022: Pours slightly darker, stronger aromas. More earthy bread malt, honey, citrus. Less brown sugar. Sweeter. Winner: Lupulin.

Overall: Has grown on me in terms of Oktoberfest Marzens and may be one of the best. It has nice toast and bitter bread spice flavors. Toasty, amber, and spiced. The peppery toasty, but also pale bitter citrus and honey. The malt match up well for a smooth and sweet finish reminiscent of brown sugar and caramel. This Oktoberfest is among the best (Final Rating: 4.27)

Ruddy, copper colored body; dense and creamy off-white head. Mild caramel aroma; lightly toasted grain. Nice nutty and toasted grain flavor; semi-sweet; a touch of raw honey; well-balanced hop bitterness. Medium body; mildly coarse with some fine residual sugar presence coating the palate; starts our mildly sweet, finishes with a fairly dry quality.

A straight-forward märzen, balanced and nicely flavored.

After having their awesome Dortmunder, I had to try this. This is not quite that caliber, but they clearly know how to lager a beer as this is smooth af. The flavor profilen is a little more simple with some basic caramel and biscuit flavors and not much hop balance despite the 30 IBU claim.

I would of normally passed on this beer by one of my lesser favorite breweries, but they did such a terrific job with their Dortmunder, I decided to give another one of their lagers a chance. Definitely Marzen style as this is dark copper color with pleasant clearness. A finger of forms then settles to a thin cap. Aroma of caramel, toasted bread. Not picking up any hop aroma. The flavor is a major disappointment. Has a weird artificial, or almost plastic aftertaste the distracts from the pleasant toasted malt flavor. Mild caramel notes and some earthy hops. Overall sweet profile. Feels a bigger beer than what it is but still nicely carbonated.

Pours a crystal clear copper amber color with a thick ivory head. Head falls away gradually and leaves minimal lacing. Aroma is caramel, roasted malt and earthy hops. Flavor follows the nose, sweet up front with the caramel and the malty finish. Hops are European in flavor. Feel is medium bodied with adequate carbonation. Overall a fabulous beer.
