look: 3 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 3 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 2.5
Presentation: A new brew that was on the shelves at BevMo during a recent trip, I have a thing for numbers so spying another one of the Baltika #s that I have not yet tried had me pulling this one off the shelf with an automatic reflex, even though my better judgment had me wavering over the purchase.
A metric sized half-litre (500ml) green glass bottle (gasp!! Skunked Russian Beers!). Labeled as 1 Pint 0.9 Fluid Ounce16.9 fluid ounces for the US market. Metallic gold and dark green label, with a similarly colored dark green and golden foil covered top. Labeled across the neck as БAЛTИKA 2, whilst the English wording on the label states Baltika 2 Lager, listed at 4.7% Alc./Vol. Production Date 04.04.06 Best before 04.04.07.
Appearance: Soft golden body, white head, average carbonation and a limited head that soon fades to a broken splurge.
Nose: Euro lager profile, pseudo-skunky aromas fill the start but they dont live that long and soon dissipate.
Taste: Simple clean lightly toasted malts, delicate bitterness, soft finish with an oh-so common Lager like standing. Back end has bitter hops but they are so feint it is nothing more than a whiff here and there amongst the toasted corny malts. Nothing unusual, or different for that matter.
Mouthfeel: Terribly thin, watery with a soft conditioning that helps to spread out the metallic feel.
Drinkability: Half a litre is just about enough to handle, but that is it, for good.
Overall: Not half as bad as I expected, but low key is the word here. Given the green bottle it doesnt take a genius to work out that this a Russian Heineken Light, of sorts.

Bottle from Mix markt in Kaiserslautern. Drinkable, but bland. Adjunct grains smooth it out, and also take away from any flavor and taste. Baltika needs to stick to one pale lager...

Poured from a 500 ML bottle into a pint glass at the World of Beer in Columbia, SC. The appearance is a clear pale yellow color with a large white head. The aroma is off-putting, stale and skunky. The taste is grains and sadly, skunkiness.

From Decervecitas. In Bavaria hefe glass. Watching Niños Grandes. Plenty of grassy hops (body not feels as watery as usual thx to this) without much taste apart from rice and a slight sweetness at beginning of sip

got to drink a number of these beers in a single session recently after seeing some on the shelves for years, and even cellaring a magnum plastic bottle of one of them for my man claystation, but really never having dipped into much of their stuff. this is the lightest of them, a classic international lager, minimalist but distinctive too, crisp and dry, refreshing, even with a little bit of green glass skunky character coming in. i like this yeast, appreciated it across a few of their beers, seems distinct and maybe done colder and longer in a lot of these, very well dried out and refined beer, and while this doesnt have a great reputation, it certainly didnt taste cheap to me either. there is some rice in this i think, more hops than a lot of these international lagers have, and a pretty defined fermentation profile. its nice with marinated mushrooms and seems summery and simple in a good way to me. the server at the restaurant tried to steer me away from this one and towards some of the higher numbered ones these guys make, but i liked this, brisk and fast and fizzy and minimal. put it in a can and get rid of the green glass skunk and it would be killer! leagues above the low carb beers here in the states, although i dont think this is trying to compete in that space.

Shockingly one of the best lagers I've ever had. Nice bready lemongrass flavor with a good, dry hoppy aftertaste on the side of your tongue. Super refreshing.

Pours a three finger white head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving a some lace. Clear paleish amber color. Light carbonation and light-medium bodied. Slight skunky nose. Starts balanced, seems to have a slight corn/rice/hop flavor - boring. Best before 4/4/2006 but I don't think it mattered. $1.95 for a 500ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

The green bottle didn't help this one. It is a clear pale gold color with a slim and disappearing head. The aroma has grain, grass and lots of sulfur. Light in body. Harsh flavor. Adjunct and grainy. This is not a good beer.
