Presentation: Totally different to previous Baltika’s that I have had to date (namely the #3, #4, #6, #8 and #9) because this one comes in a 500ml bottle (but labeled as 1 Pint .9 fluid ounces for the US market) tall clear glass bottle sealed with a gold, black and white cap with a the words “БAЛTИKA 5 ЗОЛОТОЕ” on it. Shiny gold label wraps the proboscis like neck. Main label is golden metallic gold and white with a hint of red in the coat of arms above the word “BALTIKA 5”. More English wording states “Golden Lager” below. Listed as 5.3% Alc./Vol. Reverse label has this listed as imported by Dime Group International, IL and with a Freshness Date listed as 04.04.06.

Appearance: Starts with a fizzing white head that rises up to form a thick creamy cap above the sheer and clear golden body. Rising streamers soon fade, as does the head. Dissolved carbonation is high at first but this too rescinds quickly.

Nose: Smells like…..a weak faded lager. Nothing too repulsive, but nothing too exciting either. Pale malts with a hint of delicate hops. Has a funny aspect to it, hard to describe, sort of “old - damp - musty” cellars.

Taste: Soft sweet malts, lagery with some low end sparkling condition that spreads the earlier damp-musty aspect that I picked up from the nose, directly onto the tongue. Some hops do tend to add to the finish, sweet fruit ending though.

Mouthfeel: Even when it “flattens” in appearance, it is fizzy in the mouth, a little prickly that tends to annoy a little and it detracts from the overall Drinkability, the burps can tend to be nose bound if imbibed a little too quickly.

Drinkability: Not one that was quaffable, but easy enough to finish the bottle without feeling like you got beaten by it.

Overall: Could be one of a thousand faceless World Lagers, and I would not return to this, but it was nice to try it at least and satisfy my curiosity.

Music: Thin Lizzy, Johnny the Fox - Borderline……rather appropriate really.

Best by 11/19/16; poured from clear bottle into pint glass.

Bright golden in color, crystal clear with a fluffy white head with great retention. Good carbonation. Dull aroma of malted grains and a slight corny adjunct note. Flavor is lightly toasted grain subdued by an awkward adjunct flavor (rice/corn) and a bit of diacetyl. Not a very clean not dry finish and the alcohol is slightly noticible. Not a very good lager. Basically a Russian MGD. Not very offensive but not something you crave everyday. Worst Baltika beer I've had so far (have yet to try #8, #2)

Enjoyed a bottle of Baltika #5 poured into a standard pint glass.

A very large head formed that was composed of medium to large bubbles. The beer is bright and straw colored.

There is a lightly sweet smell to this beer but a less remarkable aroma than other Baltika pale lagers like the #2.

A little bit of malt flavor comes through and there is some minimal bitterness. No strong flavors, just a hint of honey on the finish.

Number 5 is very light overall, smooth and easy drinking.

A-hazy golden with a sticky white head

S-smells like an adjunct lager. Creamy grains, not too great.

T-comes in with a taste of clean adjunct grains. It's tastes much like any adjunct lager. It's creamy.

M-medium creamy almost watery carbonation. Matching finish

O-even for the style, it's pretty bad. So far from this brewery, this has been my least favorite by a long shot. It's just not even easy difficult to finish.

Bottled 6/13/12. Best before 6/13/13.

Pours a slightly hazy yellow with a foamy white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt and grain. Taste is much the same with a slight metallic flavor on the finish. There is a very mild bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty poor beer and I think it may have something to do with the clear bottle it comes in.

Pale gold colour, thin white head, no lacing to speak of. Smells of corn, straw, light hops and a faint grass presence. Tastes crips and malty with a slight bitterness followed by a sugary sweetness that was unwelcome. Thin to medium, not great though. Kind of watery. I finished my sample, but I would not seek this out again.

Pale golden color, slightly off-white head, aromas are grassy hops and a light caramel component.

The slight hop flavors quickly give way to the light caramel notes. Not terrible, but not something I’d try again.

470 ml bottle into lager glass; bottled on 6/9/2017, best by 6/9/2018. Pours fairly crystal clear pale golden yellow color with a small dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap, Aromas of cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey/pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with pale malt and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey/pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey/pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness of pale malt and light earthy hops flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance; and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Perfectly clean lagering, no fruity/yeasty notes. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.3%. Overall this is a nice pale lager. All around good robustness of pale malt and light earthy hops flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Exceeded my expectations. Clean pils malt flavors with mild balancing earthy hops. A nicely enjoyable offering. Very well made and spot on stuff.

Picked up at the local Russian market. 500ml clear glass bottle with a drink by date of 11-09-11.

Bright and clear beer has a light yellow color. Two fingers of white head with little lacing and retention. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass.

Aroma is on the weak side with light malty smells and some floral hop character. Slight sweet fruity smell as well.

Taste is crisp, but not overly flavorful. Bitterness is low and some malty sweetness makes for a nice balance. I do notice the vegetable taste that other reviewers mentioned.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side, with high carbonation. Aftertaste is lightly dry. Overall this is an OK lager as a no frills warm-weather refreshment.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.
Look – very pale golden color, clear, with heavy carbonation and about two-and-a-half fingers’ worth of frothy off-white colored foam that dissipates somewhat quickly.

Smell – typical of any pale lager, bright and crisp but with an almost cereal grain type of smell.

Taste – also typical of a pale lager type of brew, but there’s an odd hint of something else in the background. Maybe there’s a little more hop added in, because there’s just a bit of a bite that gets cut off almost as soon as it hits.

Mouthfeel – typical of this type of brew. It leans more on the watery side of texture.

Overall – Not a bad tasting brew, but not interesting at all.

Why the clear bottle? That's a classic hallmark of amateur brewmastery. FAIL. The bottle was poured into a Williams Bros pint glass in low altitude Galway, Ireland. Bottle acquired in an off-license in Ennis, Ireland.

A: Pours a four finger head, quite thin, with a bit of cream. Retention is actually quite nice. Colour is a clear yellow without any bubbles at all.

Sm: Slightly musty barley with assorted tones of light cream and maybe vanilla. A moderately light smell.

T: Blandish barley body with undertones of cream and malt. Very simple and not at all great. Poorly built. The bittering hops destroy the balane and feel unnatural.

Mf: Very wet and rather coarse, even for the style. Doesn't suit the flavours of the body.

Dr: A bland beer not worth trying unless you're an obsessive fanatic of the style. It's not particularly easy to down, being more thick than it ought to be, and the ABV isn't that high, so it's not really even a good option for getting bollocksed. Move along, lads. Get yourself a more worthy beer for less money (especially if you're here in Ireland).

500ml bottle from SuperValu in Fermanagh, Ireland (£2.29):
Average really, nothing grabbed your attention other than the lack of off-flavours & skunk. Basic with subtle hops & faint sweetness backing up some biscuit malts & grain; nothing special really & nowhere near as good as the brewery's #6 Porter.
