Old Dominion Brewing Co. "Double D Double IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BOTTLING DATE 03/21/16" and sampled on 07/03/16
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Claymont, DE

Appearance: Very nice. Mainly clear deep gold/amber body beneath a rocky head of white that leaves craggy rings and patches of thin lace behind.

Aroma: Earthy, leafy, grassy and mildly citrusy over a dull malt component.

Flavor: Not surprisingly the flavor follows the aroma with little variation other than the addition of a solid bitterness that you could never smell anyway. It's solidly malty and solidly bitter with a good deal of hops but they don't appear very lively. Fruitiness, whether it be from yeast or hops, lingers in the back. It's almost as if there's a touch of pine as well, but that may just be the impression I'm getting from the leafy and grassy hops mixed with the 9% ABV. The alcohol never really steps forward though, which is good, but it does add a touch to the dry and bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full in body with a moderate carbonation level that leaves it just gently tingling and smooth and velvety. No faults here!

Overall: Blocky. As it stands, nothing really stands out. Either the hops need to move forward and become brighter, or the malt needs more character. It's strong, and it's rounded and balanced, but it lacks excitement and has no memorability.

A - Pours a clear golden orange with a one-finger creamy white head. Heavy amount of sticky lacing.

S - Aromas of citrus and sweet caramel malts.

T - Taste is sweet malts fading into resinous piney hops. There is a light citrus flavor throughout. Finish is lingering bitter hops.

M - Medium bodied with low carbonation. Syrupy mouthfeel. Slight alcohol burn in the finish.

O - This is a decent DIPA. The flavors are nicely balanced with an emphasis on resinous hops.

Looks good, smells ok, tastes unappealing. I liked Dominion when they were in northern Va (and still independent), but this doesn't take me back. A bit syrupy, making it hard to get through.

Served in a Tulip glsss out of the bottle. Nice appearance with a white foamy head and excellent lacing. Somewhat typical IPA aroma, but not overpowering scent. Extremely strong hoppy bitterness not for the casual IPA drinker.

A- Clear golden amber, on the pale side. A hard pour gets a creamy two finger head that leaves plenty of lacing.

S- Sweet citrus fruit aromas dominate the nose. There is a earthly, metallic sense to it.

T- Bitter hops meet sweet malts. A good mixture and balance. A pine needle aftertaste lingers

M- Medium to heavy bodied with a sticky feel.

O- This DIPA is very well balanced and a good example of the east coast variety. Not a hop bomb according to style but well balanced with a moderate malt backbone. Sits on the fence so to speak. I could see myself drinking one of these again in the future without a doubt.

Big fan of Old Dominion brews , for the most part. This Double D IPA was very good. Cracked the bottle and the aroma was pleasant. This was nice and foamy on the pour. Sweet citrus fruit aromas filled the air and not over powering. This was a combo of bitter hops and sweet malt. No bad after taste. I would order this one again !!!

Picked up a variety pack of beer from Old Dominion. It was called their pin up girl collection. It had three different types of beer. Overall all the beers where decent. This is a decent middle of the road IPA. Nothing great but good enough to get again. Worth a try.
