A welcomed darkness has fallen upon Boomsauce, our flagship Double IPA. Pouring black as midnight with a hefty tan head, yet conjuring the aromas of fresh citrus layered with the soft tropical fruit and candied orange flavors you have come to know and love in Boomsauce there appears to be something sinister at work. By summoning the smoothest black malts available to mortal men, we've created a delicate roasted malt backbone with a slightly sweet and remarkably clean finish. From the depths of darkness, Doomsauce emerges.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear jet black in color with a moderate amount of fine active visible carbonation rising quickly along the edges of the glass and light to moderate amounts of dark chestnut brown + cola brown + dark ruby red colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense sudsy foamy tan head that slowly reduces to a handful of small to medium sized patches of medium thick film surrounded by a large patch of very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of roasty + dark + chocolate + caramel malts with a light amount of caramel sweetness. Moderate aromas of citrus/orange + citrus/orange zest + tropical/papaya hops.

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of roasty + dark + chocolate + caramel malts with a light amount of caramel sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of citrus/orange + citrus/orange zest + tropical/papaya hops. There is a slightly heavier than moderate amount of roasty bitterness that lingers well through the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: Drinks pretty easily considering the strength and the alcohol is well hidden though it feels a touch light in the mouthfeel. Enjoyable though not my favorite pairing of hops (orange + papaya) with the roasty/chocolate malt profile.

Pours a very dark brown with a tan head. The initial taste brings citrus. The lingering aftertaste has a bitterness with hints of coffee and malt. It bring more of a bright citrus IPA with slight bitter after tones.

Overall a very solid beer that I would get again.

16 oz can acclimated to 47°F and poured into an IPA glass.

Pours extremely dark brown with a hint of lighter brown highlights and some sediment. Produces a 2.5 finger foamy, slightly dark khaki head, lasting a long time and leaving minimal lacing.

Initial aroma is grapefruit juice and coffee.

After agitating, I get clear medicinal alcohol backed by grapefruit juice.

Initial taste before swallowing is very juicy grapefruit, also sweet. Slight bitter coming later, plus a roastiness, like coffee and malt with a little lemon.

After swallowing I'm hit first with a pucker of citrus and then a big bitterness, dry and puckering, almost a poison bitterness. It mellows, sitting on the top front of the tongue and back of the mouth, and then mingles with somewhat bright, lemony hops, and some coffee in the finish. Separate from the lemon and grapefruit, it seems to have a general sharpness to it.

Feel is a tad bit watery for something this color, however smooth, going down very pleasantly.

Overall I'm a little disappointed, as the other black IPAs I've tried have treated me very nicely, and although high quality, this one falls short of them. I didn't get as much roastiness or other dark flavors as I'd hoped. Still obviously a high quality beer! I promise I don't mean to disparage.

Not one I would buy again, sorry Lord Hobo, it was good but not for me.

On tap at Fattey Beer Company in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells lightly citrusy, with pine, smoke, and roasted malt.

I really don’t like Boom Sauce all that much, but this Black IPA take on that series was well executed. It’s citrusy, piney, and clean, with a moderate amount of roasted malt and chocolate. It leans more citrusy IPA than hoppy stout, which I don’t mind here.

This is medium bodied, a bit creamy, and very drinkable.

This was one of the best Lord Hobo beers that I’ve had in quite a while now. It’s not usually a brewery that’s on my radar at all.

I am trying this beer off the tapper at the Woburn brewery location as part of a four sample flight. It poured an opaque dark with ecru head that is leaving some lace. The scent had strong roast and earth notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with roast malt base and clean hop presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.

Nice "Fear the Reeper" can art.
Deep, dark and clear with an off white head of foam that slumped quickly, small smears of lace in it's wake.
Aroma is malt - rich scorched caramel and pine sap - lovely dark grain notes that flow into the flavor.
This is no hop bomb but a perfect blend of porter and dbl IPA character. Sweet but not heavy, hoppy but not harsh and in no way 'soft".
Fully satisfying and complex with layers of flavor and nuance.
Great balance and near full body, dry black grain and hops on the finish.
Just as tasty a beer as I've had in a while.

A: Pours a deep brown, nearly black color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a good cap that leaves decent lacing

S: Roasted malt, pine, citrus, lighter tropical fruit, and some caramel

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with a mix of roasted malt and citrus, followed by the pine and tropical fruit. Moderate bitterness. Finishes with lingering roast and citrus

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A solid black IPA that is on the easier side to drink. A good mix of roasted malt and hops that is nicely balanced. Worth checking out

Sounds like a perfect fit to the Halloween season. Out of the pint can it came, all the contents ending up in a clear glass Imperial pint mug. It's almost as black coffee brown as a stout and it has a tan head, also stoutlike. With such a color, it's surprising that there's almost no roasted malt in the aroma. There's very little aroma at all. Interestingly, there is roasted malt presence in the taste. OK, this isn't a great brew. But, it is relatively unique for a lager. Overall, it drinks like a lager, but it finishes with the distinctive roasted malt bitterness of a stout. You're getting a stout taste without a stout body. It's doubtful lager lovers will like this, because of the roasted malt bitterness. Stout lovers that appreciate the roasted malt bitterness will miss the stout body. Kudos for the remarkable effort at a hybrid between lager and stout. Maybe it couldn't have worked out any better than this, but this isn't nearly one of the best lagers, including black lagers, out there. Still, it's much more flavorful than most lagers. Lastly, the ABV is well hidden in taste and mouthfeel. Glass lacing is modest, so is the recommendation.
