Part of the Pyramid's new "Ignition" series, which is Pyramid's belated attempt to break into the xTreme beer market. It's available from August to October (an odd period, in between seasons), and it's only available in kegs.

Black IPAs are the trendiest of trends and that's just because they blend two things that sound cool: darkness and IPAs. Whoever came up with this was a goddamn genius. It's like, hey, what are the words that people who don't know much about good beer think of when they think about good beer. "Uhh... black and IPA." Like, you don't even have to remember what IPA stands for and you could still know that IPA = fancy.

So there's a lot of variation in this style, which I regard as mostly as a marketing gimmick. But like everyone else in the whole world I am susceptible to marketing gimmicks and what could be considered my "taste" is basically just my preference of gimmicks. And this one, aside from being so blatant, is actually quite well done.

I would have thought it was a rye, from the smell and the pour. It's the darkest dark IPA I've ever come across. A little googling reveals that the lightly tart astringency--which is the first thing that hits you and basically defines the beer--is the result of a heavy handful of Black Carafa II. Neat. This is backed up really well with an intense, amazingly varied blend of high-alpha hops.

Really nicely done. This is easily the best, most adventurous beer that Pyramid brews.
