After cutting through the red wax seal of this 11% Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout, I didn't have to get too close to my snifter to detect notes of chocolate, hazelnut, coffee, vanilla and burnt oak in the nose. What I did not detect was ANY alcohol in the nose-- or on the palate--which makes Wrath a very appealing, very warming--and very dangerous-- beer. Mouthfeel wasn't overly chewy or viscous, in fact, it was quite moderate for the style. Whatever hops are in there are playing a minimal supporting role as the malts are the stars, but this is a very nicely balanced beer. I got a nice bit of that burnt oak (or burnt bourbon barrel) on the back end, too. This is a quality sipping beer, that would work well on a day like today, at a fireside with a faithful dog (or spouse--your call) as we watch the snow fall gently on our fields...As it came in a 22 Oz. bomber bottle, the soothing, reflective experience could last a bit longer than usual. But be forewarned--two of these babies will likely put you to sleep, leaving your dog or your spouse in the fireside's afterglow. (And very likely, you, out in the cold.)

This was tasted at the taproom.
L: Charcoal black with just a litle head.
S: The smell is closer to raw malt than I would have expected. Clearly not bashful with the grain bill!
T: Rich and malty. Balanced bourbon flavor. Even at 11% not too much alcohol taste.
O: Nice Russian Imperial Stout with balanced bourbon flavor.

"Insanely flavorful ales" runs the Demented Brewing tagline. I wish that were the case here.

To clarify, I'm reviewing Wrath as it's commercially available in a can. Some reviews here mention a bourbon barrel aged version, which is a completely different beer and should have its own entry.

Wrath certainly looks the part of an imperial stout, very dark beneath a dark brown head.

All the standard aromas are there - the dark roast malts, the hint of chocolate, the hint of coffee - but nothing really stands out.

Taking a sip, I again find the expected flavors, but nothing more. Dark roast malts - check. Hint of chocolate - check. Hint of coffee - check. It feels like an RIS brewed to mark everything on the RIS checklist, and no more. The expected flavors are there, but rather than "insanely flavorful" they seem muted. It feels a bit thin for an RIS, though the alcohol is very well hidden for an 11% brew.

In the end, it's an okay stout, but just that. I expect imperial stouts to be intensely flavorful, and this one just wasn't. It didn't taste bad in any way, but it wasn't exciting either. I've had many standard stouts that packed much more flavor.

Demented Brewing Co. "Wrath"
1 pint can, coded "HAPPY HOLIDAYS 12/21/17" and sampled on 08/02/18
$4.99 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well that's pretty dark coming out of the can but I've had darker. It's formed a very nice large head of creamy dark tan foam over top of an opaque brown-black body. The aroma is nutty, a little like Ovaltine, softly chocolatey, and mildly roasty. The flavor follows and I'm quite pleased with it. There's also some cocoa, a bit of golden caramel, some soft black coffee, and some fruitiness to it - I'll go with Michael Jackson's "burnt currant". The roastiness is a lot stronger than the aroma suggests but it's not overdone, and it comes on firmly and nicely in the finish without becoming like an ashtray as some can. The bitterness is kept in check as well, and balances as needed. At 11% abv the alcohol never really shows. It's really quite nice! In the mouth it's medium bodied and creamy smooth with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation. Looking back, the head has dropped to a fairly average collar, it's just slightly wider than it might be, and there's some decent tattered sheets of lacing left behind. Without question this is the best beer I've had from Demented Brewing and I hope they can keep producing beers of this caliber.

Poured from fresh crowler into tulip glass. It pours almost ink black with a half finger of light mocha-colored head and a thin sheen of lacing. The nose features roasted malt, char, burnt coffee, licorice, and nuts. The taste is like an ashtray: roasted malt, char, burnt coffee grounds, tobacco smoke, and baker's chocolate. There is a hint of dark fruit, which is more prevalent as the glass warms. It finishes decidedly bitter and with slight warming from the alcohol. This stout has a medium mouth feel with light carbonation, and I think it drinks below its 11% ABV. Overall, it's not bad but I wish I could taste more dark fruit, which I really enjoy in a RIS.

Poured from a nicely presented, wax dipped 22oz bottle (BOD: 3/31/16, Bottle# 1045) into a Rastal 2.0 Teku Glass

A - The stream out of the bottle is merely dark brown...not exactly what I would expect from an 11%ABV Imperial Stout. In the glass, the beer is black, but light seeps in at the edges. A 1/2 finger of a khaki colored head settled down quickly. (3.5)

S - Spicy Bourbon/Rye, oak, vanilla, toasted coconut, chocolate and a hint of roasted coffee. No hint of the 11% ABV in the aroma. (4.25)

T - This is the strongest attribute of the beer as represented by a strong barrel character. Bourbon, charred oak, toasted coconut and an espresso-like character from the roasted malts are all present and in good balance. (4.5)

M - As suggested by the appearance, the beer barely approaches a medium body. The tannins from the oak and roasted malt astringency result in a dry finish preventing the base beer from ever getting to linger on the palate. Carbonation is nicely done and the conservative body increases its drinkability. (3.75)

O - This is a high quality BBA stout with no off-flavors and a great first attempt at barrel aging for this new brewery. With the exception of the light-colored appearance and modest mouthfeel, this is a highly tasty offering. Although the $18 price tag for BBA Wrath might be a bit over extended, it is worthy nonetheless of checking out, especially if you live in the area. (3.75)

From 04/20/16 notes. Picked up 2 bottles of this at the release a few weeks ago; this is the bourbon BA Wrath (think that is the only one that exists). 22 oz. bottle into my Demented snifter. Bottled 03/31/16, Bottle #1773.

Pours a dark brown color, almost black, with two inches of dark tan head and low to moderate carbonation evident. Dark fruits, bitter dark chocolate, anise, roasted malts, and burnt malts. Oak and bourbon are essentially nonexistent. Medium body and low to moderate carbonation.

Overall an ok stout. Did not get any bourbon or barrel from it and a little bitter and strong for my taste. Will hold onto the other bottle for a while.
