Notes / Commercial Description:
Goodwood Bourbon Barrel Stout is an homage to Kentucky’s proud distilling legacy – brewed with the same limestone water as its namesake whiskey and patiently seasoned in bourbon barrels. This silky American stout has notes of oak, dark roasted malts and, of course, bourbon. Roasted barley produces chocolate and coffee flavors with a lasting vanilla finish.

Bottled on Jan 18.
Black with beige head with low retention but some lacing.
Aroma is lower in intensity than most for the style with some low-medium vanilla and bourbon aromas mixing with low caramel and light coffee.
Flavor is better than the aroma but it’s a close race. Fudge is the dominant flavor but espresso and chocolate liqueur fill in along medium caramel and toffee. Hops provide some countering bitterness. No harsh notes. A little too mellow.
Feel is thin for the style with low carbonation.
Definitely in the second or third tier.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a clear caramel color. The aroma is sweet malt. The taste is caramel malt. The ABV is well hidden

Pours a black color. 3/4 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of strong sweet malt, slight roasted malt, wood, and a hint of spice. Fits the style of an American Stout. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level and noticeable dryness. Tastes of strong sweet malt, slight roasted malt, wood, hint of alcohol, hint of oatmeal, slight spicy hops, hint of bourbon, and a hint of spice. Overall, good appearance, blend, and body, but aroma is lacking. The bourbon is well blended and not overpowering.

GoodWood can do some really amazing stuff and while the Bourbon Barrell stout is an enjoyable drink, I don't think it's for everyone. It's got a bit going on with a heavy mouthfeel, not from hops or anything, it just weighs heavily when you take a sip. You can certainly taste vanilla finish but the bourbon doesn't come out as much I wanted it too. While I find myself coming back to GoodWood's line up at least twice a month, I'm not sure how often this Stout will be kept in my fridge as opposed to something like their Brown Ale or their Lager.

Goodwood Brewing Co. "Bourbon Barrel Stout"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, bottled in August of '16 and sampled on 7 July 2017
$3.99 @ Total Wine & More, Virginia Beach, VA on 19 June 2017

Notes via stream of consciousness: Dammit! Total Wine got me again! Another beer that was 10 months old when I picked it up off the shelf. Oh well. It pours a full head of frothy dark tan over an almost opaque, incredibly deep mahogany brown (black) body. The aroma is roasty, and a touch cherry-like. I'd like to think it's oaky as well but I'm not quite sure. For certain, there's just a very light waft of Bourbon in the background. The flavor backs up the cherry note I found in the aroma - I thought I was imagining it - and it's also a little plum-like. Soft roast and some mild dark chocolate are present as well, as is just a touch of oak and a whisper that says "Bourbon"; you mainly find them in the lingering finish. It's surprisingly light in flavor in terms of malt, and also very light in body, and the acidity or light tartness that it offers is quite a surprise. It's certainly not what I expected, which was firm, roasty and chocolatey malt with oak and Bourbon notes throughout, although I have had strong stouts before that had a bit of fruitiness and acidity to them so it's not like it's something bizarre. It's moderately bitter but still dry in the finish, no doubt at least partially due to the acidity, with a light touch of char-like roastiness and a hint of oaky dryness. It's light-medium in body and gently crisp, which is good as it doesn't accentuate the acidity that's there. Surprisingly the alcohol is almost completely hidden. In the end it's nothing like what I'd expected, but good, kind of like a chocolate covered cherry but not quite as neither of those flavors are very strong. I like it but I kind of feel ripped-off. $3.99 for this? I think Goodwood needs to take some of that money and invest it in newer barrels because it seems the one's they're using are pretty much spent. On the other hand, that tart fruitiness wouldn't stand up to the Bourbon and oak if it was stronger so maybe it's better as it is, but charging $4 a bottle for it is a bit much.

Tasted on tap at the Park Lane Tavern, Hampton, VA.

This was a bit disappointing for a bourbon imperial stout. Look was decent (and I liked the barrel-shaped Goodwood glass it was served in). Aromas and flavors were more muted than I expect for a beer of this type. The bourbon character in particular was low. The body was thin and watery. Overall it was a watery, undistinguished stout with little to show that it was an imperial or a bourbon version.
