Style: American Black Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.40%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
In Chicago, the good guys wear black, so we dedicated our darkest beer to them. This one is scandalously spicy, built on a foundation of the finest malts and unscrupulously hopped with Chinook, Cascade and Citra. It's so good you'd think your tongue was on the take.

5/3/18: $11.25 16 ounce can purchased at the Revolution Bar at Comiskey Park II, poured into a plastic cup. Pitch black pour, nominal tan lacing. Strong pleasant rye aroma, slight hint of chocolate. Taste light rye, chocolate, pine and caramel. Interesting and very good. Thiner mouth feel and texture than expected, light carbonation. Overall good offering.

Tasted is a Spiegelau IPA glass from a one pint can on June 19, 2017. Look is deep black with a thick tan head and lingering lacing. Smell and taste is anise, pine, dark bitter chocolate and rye. Feel is medium to heavy in body with a smooth creamy finish.

A pretty solid Cascadian ale.

16oz can dated 4/2something.... can't make out the rest.

Pours a pitch black color with a late two finger tan head. Fantastic lacing is left as the head slowly recedes.

Aroma is chocolate, rye, and hops. Possibly roasted malts as well.

Taste is definite roasted malts and some chocolate. Not especially rich but lots of bitterness from the hops. Don't get much fruit or sweetness.

Feel is very light. Throws me off as the beer looks so much like a heavy stout. Dry finish. Well carbonated.

Overall, an interesting beer. A bit light on the flavors is my only complaint but this one is 2+ months old so go figure.

Pours dark black with a thick four finger frothy mocha colored head. Lovely looking beer that is more reminiscent of a stout than an IPA.

Smell has a lovely array of fruity and pine aromas mixed with some rye malt and chocolate aromas. Very nice smell.

Taste follows the nose with a strong hop presence in the form of piney and generic fruit flavors. Maybe a bit of citrus, but its not strong. Nice rye malt shines through and is prominent. Gives way to a piney cocoa finish that is more unusual but very tasty.

Feel was a bit heavy for an IPA, but given the rye style, felt appropriate. Medium carbonation. Smooth in the mouth.

Overall this was a great beer. Not sure its a 90 degree baseball weather beer, but if it were around in the fall/winter, this would be my go to cold weather IPA.

Had on tap. I liked the consistency of the beer and there is nothing wrong with it per se, but there is no wow factor either. With all of those hops I was hoping for more bite with the dark backing. Ok, moderate hops and malts

I'm not a black IPA guy, but had to try the 1st case of distribution + they are local. Gotta give love to the local brewers. I can see why people enjoy black IPAs, just not for me. Give them a try, if you like black IPA, you'll like South Loop's Good Ryes Wear Black.

poured out licorice with I would say a browned butter colored large head

I get a big anise smell, hard to pick up anything faint

you get a slight sweet anise flavor that is right for this style

thick, but not like an imperial stout no alcohol burn here.

I haven't had many black ales, but I think this makes the first cut.

16oz, "CANNED ON 3/22/18 THE BIG HURT". Thanks to my friend, Derek, for giving me yet another Hop Butcher can to try. Murky brown body with a creamy tan head that holds great retention. Aroma is interesting with hints of chocolate, earthy rye, citrus, and grain. Very earthy flavors with spicy rye pronounced along with orangey citrus, pine, chocolate, grain, and caramel. Full body, creamy texture turns to resinous hop, finishing moderately bitter with pine lingering. Good not great in my opinion.

Canned 3/22/18; drank 4/6/18 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque dark brown appearance.

A violent pour yielded a huge tan head; thick lace.

Brown sugar & orange citrus notes in the nose.

Creamy medium mouthfeel.

Cream, brown sugar & faint citrus flavors up front; mild acorn notes on the finish.

Nice black IPA vibes on this; it will never be my favorite style, but they did it well.
