16 ounce can into a snifter.

Pours a mostly opaque dark brown, with about a half inch head and plenty of foamy lacing. Smell begins with a good amount of coffee, then roasted malts, chocolate, some molasses, a little marshmallow, light smoke. The taste- wow, that's a lot of really good coffee. Followed by roasted malts, dark chocolate, a little burnt sugar, light vanilla, a little smoky. Nice bitterness on the finish. Smooth, a little creamy, full bodied, well carbonated.

This is a top tier coffee stout, as good as any other. Excellent coffee flavor, great body and feel. Buy this one anytime you see it. Great first impression of this brewery.

This brew is amazing. The amount of coffee packed into this beer is out of this world. Is it a stout? Is it a cup of coffee? It's both & it's delicious!

4/11/17 editing and slight re-rating upwards...
After retasting, this is a solid offering from a thoughtful brewer who, upon looking at their site (recommended), sticks to their knitting in the British tradition. I look forward to more.

Previous review largely stands.... With South Loop's name change to Hop Butcher For The World, they seem to be having fun with Chicago's history... so I will also.
I bought this can, not because imperial stouts are my favorite thing to drink on a hot summer day, but because I am a Chicago history buff and the can's play on the 1893 Exposition. This World's Fair was Burnham's prelude to the 1909 Chicago Plan; a new attitude to make filthy industrial cities into Beautiful Cities for people to enjoy.

But, I must review the beer.
And there is nothing wrong with it.
It looks great with brownish head and opaque body and a lace that clings to the height of the glass. The coffee, roasted dark malts and hops all meld into a rich, lingering taste that conceals both the hops and the alcohol (look out for it.)
If you like imperial stouts and you can find this, buy the World's Columbian Coffee Exposition.
