This was one of my first beers other than a wimpy yellow beer..now unfortunately the brewery was destroyed in hurricane Katrina and is now made off site in Michigan I believe, but have had both pre Katrina and post.. This is a rating on both. it still has nice color to it for a lager. As for smell it was better in the pre brew... had a nice full bodied aroma, and the post comes up alittle short on a floral note lager as did the pre. The taste pre was nice and smooth with hints of fruit...post is a little bit less smooth. The felel pre was very nice with a clean finish & post is more on a less lager feel with less body and finish. I feel that location, location has everything to do with it. Hang in there Dixie brew and fingers crossed for old brewery to come back.

Pours a cloudy brown color. 3/4 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and great lacing. Smells of sweet malt, caramel malt, strong Euro yeast, slight spicy hops, slight alcohol, and a hint of wheat. Barely fits the style of a Schwarzbier. Mouth feel is sharp and clean with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong sweet malt, slight syrup, caramel malt, Euro yeast, pale malt, hint of roasted malt, and slight alcohol. Overall, good appearance, aroma and body are more reminiscent of a Munich Dark Lager, and the blend is too sweet.

I'm in agreement that the 'old' Voodoo was a tasty dark lager, and the new version post-Katrina doesn't come close. Still drinkable, as it went down smooth for me with seafood and pasta, just not near as good as I remember. Wish the mild fruit and hop overtones were more pronounced

Thanks for gifting me with this Mike. Bottle into a pint appears dark copper in color with an off-white cap.

Aroma is malty like caramel, molasses and a little raison. Slight accenting fruitiness and a touch of buttered bread.

Taste is sweet, like sugary sweet with a faint buttery note, raisons and caramel.

Light body and modest carbonation. Its ok - not good, not bad.

I kinda like this stuff! Schwarzbier it ain't but it's a nice, easy drinking, good with food lager. Actually closer to a Munich Dunkel than a Schwarzbier with the caramelly rather than roasty flavor profile. Probably diluted with cereal grains but I would drink it over MANY American adjunct offerings.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a weiss glass.

L: Pours a semi-opaque dark brown color... reddish hints when held up to light. Two fingers of off-white head.

S: Toasted malts, sugars, and faint hops.

T/F: Sweet toasted malts and fruit sugars...hints of plum. Not overly complex but easy drinking. The finish is still semi-sweet with just a hint of hops to soften it a bit. Medium in body... fairly carbonated.

O: Definitely on the sweet side, especially for a lager or schwarzbier, or whatever it's supposed to be (too malty for either style, and not much in the way of roast character). Pairs well with spicy cajun food or possibly as a dessert, but not a beer I could drink more than one of.

Black and brown appearance, thinner, owing itself to the schwarzbier tradition. Mild 1/4" off white head. Aroma gave off some anise and roast notes, underhopped for style.

Taste was a thin malt experience, lacking in both malt and hops here. Lager yeast doesn't come through much. Best thing about this beer is the good artwork, but other than that it kind of misses the style points.

Blackened Voodoo was one of the first craft beers I had, on travel in the 1980's. Unlike other "dark beers" I had tried, it is not overly bitter. Mouthfeel is heavy, but not overly so. Excellent and drinkable.
