DATE: January 20, 2018... OCCASION: watching the Cavs get rolled at home by the Thunder--time to blow this party up?... GLASSWARE: Samuel Smith pint... pours a jet-black body--impossible to gauge its effervescence... the head is lively, spongy, and oatmeal brown... looks the part, noteworthy since it poured from a week-out crowler.... speaking of, nice and sweet oatmeal, lightly toasted biscuit malts, vanilla, hay, and a hint of peat... this actually smells less like a porter and more like a dark lager--not enough of a first impression... first sip is thin and light at its start, lightly oily in the mouth, and a harsh, vibrant crash at the throat--a medium-bodied impact with the appropriate warmth of an 8% ABV.... at half-crowler, the dominant flavors are lightly toasted malt, peat, cola, and coffee... this seems to be an apologetic offering, inasmuch as the profile doesn't overwhelm with any one attribute... the secondary vanilla and cinnamon are ancillary, and one almost must imagine them to find them... thus, this seems a bit pretentious and not as efficient in its delivery... the pepper manifests in its finish, giving a fire-breathing mouthfeel... enjoyable, singular, and appreciable--though the price tag for 32 oz. ($14 plus tip) might be a bit much for its quality...

On draft at Sole Bar and Bottle

Very dark brown in color, almost black. Tan head. Roasty, vanilla, chocolate in the aroma and taste. The pepper is hard to pick up. But still a decent Porter. Medium bodied.

From the bottle twice and on tap once. Pours a thing black with minimal head. Little lacing not too much going on. Smell and palate both full of cinnamon. Body was super thin. Over all decent take on the style but needs way more body

Just lucked my way into this on tap at Taps in the Lehigh Valley. Wow!!! I have not had a bad Sole Beer yet, but this one is really awesome. I am a huge fan of Stone Xocoveza, and this just might top it. The cinnamon, cocoa powder, Madagascar Vanillia, taste so lovely and then the cayenne sneaks in and warms everything up. Very lovely. I wish I had the Stone on hand to do a side by side. Stone may have a little more body, and I will give them extra credit for using some kind of interesting pepper.

Look: Dark and inviting. Not much on the head.

Smell: Delightful. Like something I would like to can it and spray it around my house. Cinnamon, Cocoa, Vanilla, and hints of a small town in Mexico that is cooking their special blend of Mole.

Taste: My happy place. Yum.

Feel: Warm and inviting.

Overall: You will want a second one
