Abbazia delle Tre Fontane "Tre Fontane Tripel"
33 cl. brown glass bottle, "XPR 06 16" and sampled on 1 December 2015
6€ @ Beer Land Trilussa, Roma, Italia

Notes: 8.5% ABV. Cloudy golden body with an orange cast beneath a frothy white head that holds fairly well. Aroma: malt, chalk, herbs, honey, spent citrus fruit, candyish & phenolic (soft Band-Aid). Flavor: honeyish, mildly herbal (perhaps with some Eucalyptus?), subtly spicy and phenolic (clove, very subtle banana). Balanced by a stiff bitterness. Dry finish with residual malt, fruit, and hops.

11.2oz bottle poured into a straight-walled tulip. Yeast was not roused. I did not notice a date code that I could readily decipher, but I have owned the bottle and kept it refrigerated for about three years.

A: Brassy golden color with a deeper reddish tinge. Perfect clarity. A creamy, fine-bubbled head is tight and retains very well. It drops from a solid three finger height on the initial pour down to a half inch cap, but holds fast there. Patches of chunky lacing.

S: Huge estery tropical pull. Lots of Juicy Fruit gum, candied orange peel and orange gummy wedges, overripe mango. A big sort of herbal/perfumey/minty aroma that I attribute to the eucalyptus follows closely. Some oily and herbal hops further in the background. Nutty yeast and a brush of multi-colored peppercorns. Bready malt and a slight oxidation that gives off more of an old, stale bread crust sort of scent. Golden raisin and white grape skin. Faint whiff of treacle and raw honey.

T: Juicy fruit gum, orange gummy wedges, and marmalade right off the bat. Herbal/oily hops ride up soon after and it is surprising how apparent they are due to both the age of the liquid and the beer style. Bitterness is also modestly firm. Cool and minty/herbal eucalyptus. Peppery and playful in the phenol department. Oxidation is much more apparent in taste. Old stale crust, lots of raw honey, and the "old book" sort of mustiness. Brush of boozy alcohol. Finishes with some bread and honey and a long-lingering herbal/oily note.

M: Full and thick in the mouth with a real sense of smooth and firm malt richness. Not too weighty though, as the blast of tight, scrubbing carbonation also achieves a good deal of "lift." There is some gripping oily hop astringency too, surprisingly.

O: An Italian-brewed Trappist Tripel with eucalyptus is not the kind of beer you pass on if you consider yourself any kind of serious beer geek. That blend of uber-tradition and unique style bending simply can't be ignored. I do wish that I had gotten around to it sooner, as it definitely shows its age, but as it stands it was the unique and enjoyable experience I had hoped for. The Belgian yeast and fermentation character is nailed, the malt and boozy brawn are on point, and the eucalyptus and heavy-handed hoppiness are a pleasant surprise. In the end, it's a solid beer, but I don't think I'd put it in the upper echelon of Trappist offerings. That's an incredibly high bar to set, though. I don't think it'll appeal much to the "new money" beer nerds, but for the Old Guard and the hardcore among us who think they've had 'em all, this will give you another worthy tick to track down. It's more of a food beer I think, but I bet it would make a killer cheese board accompaniment.

Aroma is floral, cloves, banana, fairly weak. Taste is an immediate wave of cloyingly sweet honey, banana, with floral clove peppering the back, very refreshing and chilling, like a wave of fresh air. A very solid choice

Whoa! Spice drops, anise, licorice, cinnamon, clove, and of course eucalyptus. Full white head dissipates quickly. Bright mouthfeel, odd sweet tones on the nose.

33cl bottle poured into a chalice. Complex taste of a Trappist Tripel, with very interesting undertones of eucalyptus. Good mouth feel, finishes dry. Quite nice overall. Not easy to find in the States, but worth the search.

The look is deep amber and hazy with a finger of dirty white head. The nose is honey, coriander, brown bread, and Halls cough drops. There is brown sugar, more coriander, and black peppercorn in the taste with an herbaceous note on the finish like horehound candy. The feel is rich with active carbonation. There is nothing wrong with this beer...not great but still good.

gold-amber, little foam. Apples, pears, some sweetness, some spices. Eucalyptus leaves gives it a herbal, tea-like flavor and freshness.

(Bottle poured into tulip glass)

L: deep amber color. Very similar to apple cider in appearance. Very small head that disappeared quickly into a thin ring around the inner edge of the glass.

S: Honey and caramel at the forefront. Has a similar smell to anise. A fig-like fruitiness as well.

T: Molasses and more of that anise or fruity taste. Coriander thrown in there. Hearty fruit notes.

F: a thick tripel, leaning towards medium-full bodied.

O: first tripel from Italy and a pretty good one. No bubblegum, banana, or yeasty flavors here for me. The clean finish and interesting flavor does lend itself to a good beer for pairing.

12 oz bottle, poured into a tulip at ~40 degrees F.

L: Pours an opaque deep golden-amber, like a crystallized clover honey. Forms a small short-lived fizzy white head.

S: Coriander and cardamom well out of the glass, above something not unlike ripe wheat and light fruits. A tinge of molasses. Something reminiscent of a distant, far-off open jar of Vick's.

T: Brown sugar and molasses swirl around spicy coriander and cardamom, with shades of white grape in the backdrop. Caramel and soil, a vinous tinge.

F: Medium to full bodied, and quite lively.

O: A tasty tripel, with some unique flavors to it.
