This looks good with a big foamy head that reduces to a snow cap atop an almost amber reddish hued brew. The aroma is engaging and complex, hoppy and beguiling.

What at first I think are piney tropical pineapplefruit almost-medicinal notes develops into a strong juniper aroma.

It makes me think of a fresh forest aroma after a rainfall, of Michigan evergreens, of summer rains and cooling nights…. And that’s just from the aroma.

The flavor brings it on with a gruit-like almost medicinal juniper assault. There’s a hint of sage which mellows things out and some light chew. At 8% this is more IPA than double. Finishes with a little bit of pine backbone, some resin & a light chew. Warms well. Remains fantastic throughout.

Bought to share with a buddy but due to commitments we had to postpone for a month. Hope to find another one of these by then!

Utterly delicious, fantastic brew. More more more por favor

huge thanks to my friends for bringing me a four pack of pint cans on their way through this weekend, really unique double ipa here, so much to like about this, i was really impressed, and its easily my favorite beer ive had from mammoth now, although thats still not all that many. this is brewed with juniper berries and sage, super cool botanicals to compliment the hops with, and the proportions are awesome. i also love this being a west coast type at its core, not that its real bitter or anything, but its not overly dry hopped and green, its not all hazy and thick, and it ends up being one of the few in this style space i can and want to drink multiples of! fairly clear medium amber color on this and a high inch plus of lasting just off white head comprised of tiny bubbles, some lacing as i work it down. the nose on this rules, the herbal bitterness of the juniper, a tea-like thing from the sage, and some piney and bitter hops, oily, resinous, notes of honey and toffee from the malt but not sweet to me, toasted character too, nothing at all from the alcohol or the ferment, so this is bright and fresh and clean for being on the maltier side of the style, really cool balance to it. the juniper berry is forward in the flavor, slightly medicinal but not astringent or sharp, its fruity at the same time that its piney, wonderful with these hops but playing in its own space too, lightly bitter, dried blueberry, pine sap. sage brings a culinary vibe, more intense in aroma than flavor, but also is unique with the hops, gives this a sense of place, soft and pretty and a little bit floral to me, but also adding some bitterness too. i am thankful for the richer malt balance and the body it brings, and i am pleased that this can finish so dry with it, its a long flavor trip, extended by the herbs and the malt, but its also still sort of clean finishing and each sip leaves me wanting another one, not boozy at all. amazing mix of flavors here, i think an underrated beer on BA, really one of a kind in this double ipa style, hops still are the star, but the extras make this for me. glorious brew.

On tap at Mammoth Brewing

A: Pours rich copper amber with a frothy pale khaki head that settles to a light layer and laces nicely.

S: Herbal and earthy, sage and juniper are there but nicely balanced, light citrus, a bit floral, toasty bready malt, and a touch of honey and toffee sweetness.

T: Resinous, herbal, earthy, definitely get the sage and juniper, piney, a little citrus, grapefruit, and lemon, floral, toasty bready malt, and honey toffee sweetness.

M: A touch on the fuller side of medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: It's been years since I last got a taste of this one, been wanting to do a full review when I could get it fresh and it doesn't get much better than from the source. I'm definitely enjoying it more than the last time. Sage and juniper are
an awesome local touch and play really nicely with the base beer. Glad to see this one has stuck around through the years.

September 2nd, 2015 - Much better than traffic on a freeway is the IPA 395. It is an intensely dark beer with an almost oak like brown shade, and tons of spindly columns of bubbles. The aroma is huge with spice and floral notes, and some freshly ground black pepper and lavender. It's lovely all around, and the taste continues to impress. A bit soapy and floral up front, it develops a lavender note in the middle, genuine and rich and fresh. For an inexpensive beer this is quite excellent.

Can a beer improve depending on the location where it's consumed? I've had this somewheres in the bay area, probably purchased at a bevmo, and it wasn't anything memorable. But recently I had a bottle of 395 IPA on the deck of the Whoa Nellie Deli in Lee Vining, just 100 yards or so away from highway 395 itself, overlooking Mono Lake at dusk with wild buffalo meatloaf for dinner. The gate to Tioga Pass just opened earlier in the week and Mt. Conness, tomorrow's destination, was still loaded with snow. The sage and juniper aroma of the beer mixed with the scent of sagebrush on the air with each sip. This beer isn't a hop bomb altogether, there's enough malt to sink your teeth into. The Eastern Sierra is some amazing land and on that evening this was the perfect beer. Is this what the French mean by terroir?
