Style: Extra Special / Strong Bitter (ESB)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
No, there isn’t any birch syrup in the brew. A Best Bitter with the bold, citrus-like flavors of Centennial and Cascade hops. Each keg is dry-hopped to give the additional nose that will satisfy any hop-head. This is very much a “session beer,” with a an ABV of around 4.5%. It is truly the signature beer of the brewmaster.

This was poured into an English pint glass. The appearance was a hazy amber color with a slight bubbly head. The aroma had some cracker to bready malt up front and a light citrusy to bitter piney hoppiness ever so subtle in the background. The flavor yielded to the malts decently. Birch taste comes out here. Quick crackery malt aftertaste. Cracker and birch in the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a subdued carbonation about it. ABV felt right. Overall, as a Bitter it works, but the birch is really only tasted. Never smelled it, no matter how many times I had it. Perhaps again, as it’s decent for the style.

I'm sure there are a few others... but Homer doesn't bottle so keep that in mind.

Apples, bitterness, medium carbonation. I enjoyed this beer but it had a slightly awkward aftertaste

Picked up in a growler from the brewery in Homer. I've seen a few Homer Brewing beers around town but don't remember if this was one readily available.

It pours a dark orange color, slightly hazy color to it.

The aroma is hoppy bitter, grapefruit flavors like a good IPA.

The taste is more like an IPA too, but with a bit of a malty aftertaste to it. Not super strong and bitter but very nice balance.

Another solid beer from these guys, amazing that a town like Homer, AK can have a brewery putting out solid beers but back home in Baton Rouge, at 100x the size, we have none.

from the long-buried notes..

Did not realize this was 4.5 brew, my respect for the flavor has increased even further.

cloudy amber with a quick offwhite head that moves quickly away to a thin lace.
grass and citrus, a little bit of malt. the grass is strong, citrus background with a grainy malt aroma.
pretty tasty, present bitterness but not overpowering 40-50 IBUS probably, little bit of grass and citrus. dextrinous malt presence, probably why I didn't realize the low abv. I had figured this was round 6 or so.
tasty overall, perhaps my favorite of their selection. I really wanted these guys to be brewing amazing shit, but they don't have to, the beautiful town supports them (as they should) and their beer isn't bad, I just gots high hopes.
