Look was very dark, nearly black with bright lights showing through it.
Smell is slightly malty with overlying bitter-earthiness.
Taste was what disappointed me personally, not as smooth as other wee heavys that I've had, much more bitter bite to it. Don't really get smokiness.
Feel is what this ale had beat of, it's heavy.
Overall I would have preferred founders dirty bastard for it's smoothness.

22oz bomber purchased at the brewery by my friend Lori and given to me as a gift. No freshness date that I can find.

Poured into a nonic pint glass, this was a dark brown that took on a coppery, rubyish hue when held up to light. Big, bubbly beige colored head.

Smoked with Bamberg malts, the smokiness emerged slowly as the beer warmed up, and was never particularly strong. Through the smoked malts, scents were perceptible that resembled toffee and dark fruits.

Taste was stronger than the aroma, but it's a subtle beer for the style. Flavors were right for a wee heavy, but more mellow than most I've had.

Medium-full body, with a lighter, more watery mouthfeel than I expected.

Pretry good, but oddly muted. Maybe this is not so fresh. Anyway, good enough that I'd try it on tap if I came across it somewhere.

Hazy, chestnut brown on pour. Head is fairly small but lacey. Smell is malty sweetness, slight smokiness, some stout-like chocolate. Feel is very smooth with light carbonation. Taste follows the smell, malt, smokey chocolate. Quite an easy drinker, and although I still prefer their Mackinaw Red as a smokey dinner beer, this is still very enjoyable.

i have a buddy and he likes to play a game called how smokey is this smoked beer we have never tasted going to be, and its one of my favorite games too, because you just never know. usually its scored somewhere between one and ten, and here we have about a five, but the smoke is obvious among curious root beer and cola notes, campfire, cocoa, and residual sugar, this one is still awfully sweet, but it has a lot going for it in terms of malt depth, and i had fun drinking it. lighter than some, deeper amber, but not that dark, with a short head from the tap at the source. hints of raisin and tobacco in the flavor, and the smoke is there from beginning to end, its not overly complex, but the smoke lingers, cigar and pipe elements to it, but with the grain sweetness its pretty soft, like i could drink more than one of these. my friend would call this a four, id say five in our game, it lingers, and there is a light bitter astringency to it, but the overall balance is excellent and i think this is one of the better beers from these guys currently in the works. they are doing some solid beer, but this brings nice smoke to a sweeter and basic scotch ale. as a scotch ale, without the smoke, it would be just average, but they have built it up well. nice!

Pours deep brown with small beige head. Chocolate and wood smoke are noticeable aromas. Taste is spot on scotch: peat, earth, wood, some dark chocolate. Smooth with some lingering stickiness. Good stuff.

Lovely pile of off-white suds . Dark and murky red-brown brew. Great smokey scent. A little sharp but smooth and just sweet enough. A medium body with a dollop of syrup.

Pleasant smoke flavor doesn’t overwhelm the roasted malt. Just a touch of bitterness. Appley flavor with some sweet malt. Modest bitter finish. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the Co-op Market in Boise.

From the website:

"This sweet and earthy traditional Scotch Ale utilizes Bavarian Rauch malt to provide beech wood smokiness. Not too much, just right. Please enjoy this Scotch Ale offering and “ get a little wobbily.”. Indeed.

ABV 7.0% Hops: Challenger, Willamette"

Label says 7.2%

22 picked up today at Bier Thirty for $7... Poured tonight into my slim tulip... long lasting tannish head atop a walnut colored brew... nice lacing for the entire glass.

Nose shows a bit of the (as promised) Bamberg malt... Not as malty as many Scotch ales for sure, there is a background dark toast and caramel... I think the smoke masks the malt profile a bit too much.

Flavor mirrors the aroma... smoke (although lighter than expected) starts and finishes this beer with a bit of malty sweetness mid-late palate that helps carry the palate.

Body and carbonation are right for the style... Medium/full body with a light/medium carbonation.

Personally, I don't care for smoked beers too much.. but that is my issue not the brewer's. However, the Bamberg malt is a little over the top and out of place in a Scotch ale... IMO, it should be toned down a bit.

4/3/3/4/3.5

Edit: I entered this as a Wee Heavy... If somebody wants it changed down the road to a smoked beer, then feel free to ask for a change... My feelings won't be hurt.
