12oz bottle into a pint glass. Lengthy coding hard to figure out, but likely a year old at least.

Looks very good in the glass. Darkest brown body, decent tan head, considering the abv. This eventually shrinks to a ring, specks of lacing.

Strong aromas of roasted malt, bitter coffee, and a touch of chocolate.

On tasting, confirms the nose. In a way it's smooth, but the strong roasted malt and bitter coffee flavors mask this. It's also oddly a little winey, maybe age related.

Mouth full, finish bitter and roasty.

Overall, an aggressive oatmeal stout, strong flavors. While that might be offputting for fans of the style, as a stand along drink once in a while, this is okay. Abv well nigh invisible.

On tap at the Dark Horse Brewery (now owned by Roak) in Marshall MI.

Appearance. Very dark reddish-brown with a decent off-white head.

The aroma suggests sweetness and dark dried fruits. While the lightly smokey flavor carries a bit of these, particularly hints of raisins, overall this has mild-moderate bitterness.

Feel. Smooth as expected in this style.

From a tap and into a clear pint glass it was delivered. Just a little more toward brown, especially at the fringes, than most stouts and porters with that black coffee color. An aroma of roasted malt is present, slightly muted by an oatmeal presence. There's no head, nor glass lacing. The taste is of malt, so roasted that there's a bitterness that is prominent, but it's not as astringent as some that are reminiscent of burnt coffee. As with most stouts, there are taste references to dark chocolate and expresso. For an oatmeal stout, the tastes are unusually sharp. That may be at the expense of the mouthfeel, which is a little lighter across the tongue than many in the category. More taste, less smooth, a trade-off that's often worth it. This has an inclusion of a potent ABV and is well worth a try.

12oz bottled 01/22/20 poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp 8.3% ABV 45 IBU per label. The beer pours dense black with minimal light penetration and light brown head. The head recedes to a thin ring and few bubbles. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring bitter dark chocolate. The taste is more bittersweet with additional coffee and chocolate notes. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, very good.

Pours a dark brown color with ruby edges and a finger of beige head. The nose has notes of both roasted malt and coffee. The flavor follows the nose and the body is hearty.

This is a gem.

12 ounce can, no date I could find on the can or label. Bought as part of the Devil Dog variety pack with French Toast and Chocolate Lava Cake versions. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch or so tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. The brew smells like roasted malt, oats, coffee, nuts and bittersweet chocolate. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also some milk chocolate flavor noticeable too. Gets sweeter tasting as it warms, but it's still roasty. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy with a good amount of carbonation. I thought it was a good overall stronger oatmeal stout, certainly worth picking up if you come across some!

12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours almost black; small khaki head that fades leaving decent retention and lacing. The aromas are malt forward. Hints of smoke, cocoa and marshmallows. The flavors follow the nose. More hints of smoke. More cocoa and chocolate. Mild hints of coffee in the mix. Some soap. Moderate bitterness to go with a nice little sweetness. It's bittersweet. Strong malt backbone. Mild warmth, but the alcohol basically goes unnoticed for the most part. Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's sharp, fluffy, smooth and slightly creamy.

This is a very solid oatmeal stout. It's a classic and traditional example of the style. It's not flashy, but it's not supposed to be. It's straightforward and well executed. Not bad at all. I like it.
