BEER INFO

Brewed by:

Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Hoarders Society exclusive blend of our Sour In The Rye and our bourbon barrel aged old-ale, Sucré, with the addition of an incredible number of boysenberries. This deep purple beer is textured with sweet notes of caramelized malts, spicy rye, oak, juicy berries and a pleasantly sour funk. It’s a rather befuddling meld of flavors with an outcome that we couldn’t enjoy more.

2017Vintage
9.9% ABV

Appearance: Medium brown with purple overtones and a modest-sized light beige head with purple notes that quickly faded. Good looking beer.

Smell: Mild tart fruit notes and mild grassy notes. I also get some mild Bourbon and a bit of funk.

Taste: Boysenberry, mild Bourbon, mild hay, and mild oak notes are the main players in the flavor profile. The sour level is modest and smooth in this beer likely due to the Anniversary beer blended in. All the flavors play nice with each other to form a smooth tasty treat.

Mouth-feel: On the heavy side of medium-bodied which makes for a nice bodied wild ale.. Very mild alcohol presence.

Overall: Tasty beer who's blended makeup combines for a tasty beer. I'm definitely a fan of this beer.

750 ml wax-dipped bottle poured into a Bruery tulip.
10.6% ABV, 2014 Edition 07/03/14

A - Raisin purple-tinted muddy brown, this cloudy beer pours with a slightly pinkish off-white head that builds quickly and lowers considerably slow for its acidic nose but leaves little lace behind.

S - Sharp acidity pricks the nose with delightfully pungent sourness that leads directly into boysenberry syrup - fresh fruit, not artificial sugary garbage. Spicy rye rises above the dark toasted malts for a pleasing aromatic base that only hints at it's high alcohol level. Toasted oak notes emerge wonderfully on the back end as the beer warms, delicately incorporating earth tones into the funky beer.

T - Spicy rye and toasted malt are immediately overcome by terribly sharp sour acidity that leaves little else on the palate save for mildly sweet boysenberries and dry oak that creep up slowly on the finish.

M - I enjoy sourness of different levels depending on the beer style but I LOVE when a beer is tongue-bruisingly sour and Befuddlement is just that: Sour. As. Hell. Huge dry acidity arrests the tongue immediately and doesn't let go as the beer finishes with further drying alcohol, which remains disturbingly absent otherwise.

O - The Bruery's Befuddlement is reminiscent of many of their other sour beers and, if you've had any of their other sour beers you know, this is no insult. Brash acidity and sourness arrest the senses while spicy rye and oak barrels lay an earthy and complex base. Also like many other Bruery beers, this bottle packs a wallop of alcohol.

I tend to stay away from the soir series from The Bruery, but this brew is very tasty stuff...not much on the nose, but I get plenty of sweet red grape and oak from the barrel on the taste...

Drinking bottle with two beautiful Taiwanese girls.

Beer looks like beer. Awesome!!

Smells like a boysenberry muted sour deliciousness. Great.

Tastes better than the smell: berry berry goodness.

Fuck I'm drunk and havin fun. Yeah!!!

Pretty excited to try this given that Sour in the Rye might just be my favorite beer.

A: Deep reddish brown, quite like a typical flanders red.
S: Berries, sour cherries, oak, with a touch of booze and caramel.
T: The sourness hits first with a wash of fruit and then melts away into the boozy bourbon toffee and then slightly bitter wood and fruit on the finish. The finish is very reminiscent of a Flanders / Flemish Red.
M: Robust body, minimal carbonation.
O: Pretty solid. I'm not sure it all plays together perfectly and I'll need to try Oude Tart again soon for a good comparison to their actual Flanders Red but I quite like it. There's definitely a lot going on.
