Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Beret is as artistic as those who wear its namesake cap. Our brewers developed a silky, full-bodied wheat ale which we began fermenting with our house yeast strain. To finish the fermentation, we added our collection of barnyard bacteria, intended to slowly sour the ale, bringing out a slight funk and refreshing piquancy. Finally, a small dose of pureed raspberries were added for just a hint of fruity tannins, putting the berry in Beret.

2015 vintage

L - Pours a hazy golden colored body with a one finger off-white head.

S - Raspberry, oak, funk and sour. The nose just has an in your face element to it.

T - Light raspberry tartness, oak and a sweet element. The taste doesn't pop of sourness like the nose did. The raspberry sweetness can come off a bit jammy and that subdues the tartness a bit.

F - Medium bodied and medium carbonation. Has a dry finish.

O - With a lower abv, this beer would be on the money. It's still a beer that will keep your attention.

Funk-filled and bright with fruit, The Bruery's raspberry sour ale teases the tastebuds with playful acidity and the tantilizing succulence of branch-ripe raspberry and a rolling waft of rusticity and earth.

Beret's bright aromas are more funky and tart on the nose than fruity. Leading with notions of dry apple cider, white wine, cedar and burlap, its raspberry contributions are tangy, bright and slightly cranberry-like. But bright golden in its pour, the beer's lightly hazy body casts a creamy, delicate white froth that shows no sign of its fruitiness within. Modestly sweet and wheaten, the first sip is rounded with light wafer starchiness with a hint of confectioner's sweetness.

As the middle palate opens up, so does the fruit. Seemingly soaked in rice wine vinegar, the raspberries are medium-ripe with an overall "red" taste. Cranberry, redcurrant, raspberry and bing cherry all seem of the under-ripened character and only fuels the tartness of the beer. Its white vinous character shares a peppery finish with a sharp pectin bite.

Apple skins, white pepper and raspberry trek into a medium-length aftertate and a medium-dry body. Its light taste and texture lays a thirst-stripping sourness on the late palate and ushers in utmost refreshment, crispness and cleanliness; and a continual drift of balsa and burlap.

I believe the Bruery absolutely nailed this beer. I don't think anyone does a sour beer better in CA. The bottle description is exactly what the beer tastes like. Not overpowering or totally in your face (nothing wrong with that when they do it right), I really enjoyed this.

Light gold in color with a slight amount of haziness within the body. There is a minimal amount of bright white head surrounding about a quarter of the rim. Vibrant carbonation bubbles erupt from within. The nose is tart Brett, raspberries, with a light amount of woodsy oak and faint coriander. The flavor is filled with boldly tart Brett, tart raspberries, and woodsy oak. Faint amounts of coriander are also present. The mouth is very carbonated and crisp. Very unique.

750ml bottle - wow, can't people frickin' read when adding new beers on here? I'm going with this one, since it was added first.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with three fat-ass fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and fizzy off-white head, which leaves a bit of roiling wavecrest lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of musty raspberries, some thankfully tame barnyard bacterial funkiness, gritty and grainy wheat malt, a hint of lactic sourness, oaked white wine lees, some further peach/apricot orchard fruitiness, balsamic vinegar, rainbow peppercorn spice, and some very tame leafy, earthy, and somewhat perfumed floral hop bitters. The taste is some fairly tart raspberry, peach, lemon/lime, and cherry fruitiness, a semi-sweet and cereal-forward wheatiness, lesser pale malt notes, a kind of reserved funky and musty, yeasty and other wee beastie 'character', vanilla-heavy white wine barrels, damp saltine crackers, and more timid leafy, spicy, and estery verdant hops.

The carbonation is quite pervasive in its trilling frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and sort of smooth, only the fruitiness getting fresh here, and that is typically ok in my book, no, tome of exceptions to the rules. It finishes on the sweet side, the base mixed malt joined at the metaphorical hip with the lingering fruit, while the barrel and funky notes agreeably wisp on off into the ether.

Overall, this is a very pleasant and engaging version of the style, as the 'wild' component is duly dialed down, leaving the malt and fruity essences room to breath, and subsequently flourish. Tasty and refreshing, with a well-integrated 17-ish proof booze factor, and thus indicative of what this Orange County brewery is capable of putting out there.
