Tart of Darkness is a sour stout aged in oak. Brewed to resemble a stout at its foundation, the journey into tartness begins with fermentation in large oak puncheons at Bruery Terreux, where it’s treated to a special blend of souring bacteria and wild yeast cultures. Following a slow but wildly active fermentation, the beer is transferred for extended aging into a dedicated collection of used oak barrels for Tart of Darkness. This includes emptied bourbon barrels from The Bruery that previously held beers such as Black Tuesday®. This special edition was aged with black currants

Purple to black, a bit of light brown colored foam.
Smell: black currant, tannins, vinous.
A lot of dark fruit, black currant, blueberry. Intense.

2018

pours dark like a porter, fizzy with a slight light reddish brown head.

smells like a basic sour with yeasty funk and sourness hinting at some dark berry earth tones

Taste is along the lines of what you'd expect from a standard wild sour, theres a definite currant note in the aftertaste for me. better than a lot of sours in execution

feels nice, good carbonation and drying tartness, a bit full and not so much acidic pummeling

very nice as to be expected but nothing thrilling by any means

Look - This beer pours a very dark reddish brown with a one finger tan head.
Smell - Immediately funky with notes of fruit. There is also a deeper scent of leather and oak.
Taste - Sharp sour up front with funkiness on the finish, lots of funk. The presence of fruit is detectable, but I would not have guessed black currant. Almost a slight chocolate flavor that must come from the roasty quality of the stout. Very pleasant.
Feel - Smooth and soft, astringent.
Overall - This was my first ever sour stout, and it was quite delicious. I enjoyed the deep roasty flavor of a stout melding with sour and tart fruit.

Poured into a wine glass. An opaque dark chocolate color with a medium sized tan head. Aroma was as billed with complex oak barrel, red wine, currants, and faint roasted malt. Taste followed. Quite tart but with a rich currant flavor. As it warmed, the chocolate notes from the malt appeared, which complimented the fruit well. The barrel added a nice complexity. Outstanding.

Pouts an effervescent mahogany with rapidly fallen cocoa colored head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Tartness, plums, not much else

T: Dried salted plums, a little black currant & and woody dryness up front. Much tartness as this warms, plums, leafy hops, a touch of black currant as well, maybe a little black cherry as well. Finshes tart with woody dryness and a little more salted plum & black currant

MF: Light body, delicate carbonation

Drinks alright, just too much tartness for me truly to enjoy; I am tiring of this style

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/3/2018. Pours clear nearly opaque dark brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge sour/tart/tangy black currants, fruit skin/seeds, cranberry, raspberry, raisin, plum, apricot, fig, cherry, lemon, green apple, red grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, cocoa, brown sugar, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, chocolate, coffee, leathery/musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Amazing complexity, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, currants, dark/bready/light roast malts, and moderate oak barrel notes; with big strength. Taste of huge sour/tart/tangy black currants, fruit skin/seeds, cranberry, raspberry, raisin, plum, apricot, fig, cherry, lemon, green apple, red grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, cocoa, brown sugar, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, chocolate, coffee, leathery/musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang; light yeast/oak spiciness and roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of black currants, fruit skin/seeds, cranberry, raspberry, raisin, plum, apricot, fig, cherry, lemon, green apple, red grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, cocoa, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, light funk/vinegar, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, currants, dark/bready/light roast malts, and moderate oak barrel flavors; with and awesome malt/tartness and tangy fruit balance; with no puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering tartness and tangy fruit. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/acidic/tangy, and lightly chalky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6.2%. Overall this is an amazing fruited sour/wild ale! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, currants, dark/bready/light roast malts, and moderate oak barrel flavors; amazingly smooth and easy to drink with the modestly acidic/tangy/drying finish; no overly lactic. Insanely jammy currants, with balanced Brett/Bacteria complexity, malts, and solid oak presence. Not a ton of roast, but solid. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example as expected.

A 375ml bottle, 2018 vintage, bottled on 4th January 2018. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass.

Appearance: A dark brown cola colour with a two finger dark tanned head that had decent retention and left some stringy lacing.

Aroma: Tart, blackcurrant, Ribena, light roast, cocoa, coffee and oak.

Taste: Pretty much what you would expect from the aroma, sour, tart, blackcurrant, Ribena, light roast, cocoa, chocolate and coffee.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: I love blackcurrant and the great thing is that it is very prominent here. I think because of the blackcurrant, I actually enjoy this better than the original version. Great balance of sour, fruits and roast.
