A: Poured into a snifter to a black beer topped by a dense and rocky finger of light tan head which fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing.
S: Smells of a nice tart fruitiness up front with a lot of blackberry and blueberry notes. Nice dark chocolate notes are hiding in the background as well but the nose is pretty fruit forward on this beer.
T: Taste is nice and tart up front with some juicy blueberry and blackberry notes along with dark chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts with a little bit of oak and vanilla. The acidity comes back around again as the flavors continue to dance and move across the palate. On the swallow there's a hint of anise before chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts come back with another round of that delicious and juicy berry flavor. The barrel comes in at the end as well along with a lingering slightly tart finish
M: This beer is big and fairly thick on the palate while feeling a little slick and syrupy. Carbonation is on the low end of effervescent which is adequate for the style while the beer has a drying finish from the ABV and acidity.
O: Overall this beer is all sorts of awesome. I'm a huge fan of Blue BBLs and the addition of the blackberries just adds another delicious layer to an already awesome beer. This beer is an outstanding drinking experience with an amazing amount of complexity. This is definitely one to try if you like big sour stouts with some fruit.

2018 vintage tasted in a Rastal Teku from a 750 ml bottle on March 10, 2019. A special blend of bourbon barrel aged imperial stout with bourbon barrel aged sour stout. Features a bold and penetrating addition of juicy blackberries and blueberries.

The beer is 48 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The beer a hard pour produced a one finger medium tan head. The head dissipated quickly, that is sad. The head was foamy and creamy leaving no lacing on the glass. The color of the beer is SRM 35 a dark used oily brown color. The beer is opaque. A few carbonation bubbles persist on the sides of the glass. The beer's appearance is just okay.

The aromas in the beer are a dark roasted malt, fruit, coffee, a sour aroma, vanilla, wood, bourbon, molasses, earthy, and yeast.

The flavors in beer are dark roasted malt, fruity, coffee, sourness, vanilla, wood, bourbon, molasses, earthiness, and yeast.

The mouthfeel of the beer is chewy and acidic.

The body of the beer is full, the carbonation is medium, and the finish is full.

I enjoyed this beer. The sour stout part is just enough to make the beer rounded and interesting.

2018 Vintage part of RS Initiation package

Appearance: Dark brown with a medium sized dark beige head that slowly faded. The beer dark beige head has hints of purple in it. Good looking beer.

Smell: Fruity notes featuring the blackberries/blueberries and modest red wine like notes. A mild hint of Bourbon and a bit of brown sugar.

Taste: Mild Bourbon, prominent blackberry/blueberry, some mild grape notes, and mild brown sugar all combining to form a unique, tasty, smooth and complex flavor profile. The different flavor notes work very well together. This beer like Blue BBLs pulls a magic trick with it's listed ABV. It easily drinks like it's less than half it's listed alcohol content.

Mouth-feel: On the heavy side of medium-bodied. No alcohol heat to speak of.

Overall: Very tasty beer who's unusual makeup results in a tasty and unique treat. I am a real fan of Blue BBLs and this one I feel may be a step up. A very unique, tasty and complex treat.

Pours dark with some reddish blue. Brown/blueish head that dissipates quickly. Fruity, barrel aroma. Can taste the fruit, sweetness balanced by moderate sour. As it warms the barrel profile gets stronger.

750 bottle, serving temp, 55F, poured into a tulip.

Black, small off white head, which fully diminishes.

Nose: blackberry, blueberry, and barrel notes.

Flavor: Blackberry, Blueberry, oak, chocolate, some fruit sweetness and tartness.

Medium body, alcohol warmth and slight acidity.

The fruit takes center stage with this beer, but the blend creates a unique complexity. The 30% sour stout adds some tartness that works well with the fruit. No funk as others have noted. The BA stout creates a backbone of barrel and subtle chocolate notes. The result is a unique complex beer that keeps looking forward to the next sip to unravel the complexity.

L: Black'ish pour, minimal khaki head. It's an AWA blended with clean stout so there's not a whole lot to see.

S: Roasty with a prominent blueberry skin note. Doesn't smell sour but there's a little funk to the nose.

T: I really like this although it's a little bizarre. A very even and thoughtful blend of BT richness, smoke, and bourbon- countered by savory and fruity notes from the fruits.

F: I'm picking up a lot of the classic BT notes: no alcohol burn but it's got that slick mouthfeel that tells me this is above 14%. There's really very little by way of sourness or even funk, if you told me this was all clean yeast and just a tiny touch of pucker from the fruits, I'd believe it, although deep in the finish there's a bready/ brett note.

O: An unusual but worthy blend. If you like experimental brews you should like this, but it's good this is a fairly exclusive brew because it's not really fit for the everyday consumer. Looking forward to trying the normal Blue BBLs and any other variants they come up with.

Poured from the bottle into a teku glass.

Slightly fizzy sounding head out of the bottle, with a mix of fine and creamy bubbles. Settles to a fairly big bubbled collar top with a tan and purple like color. Body color seems to be going that vein as wel (no pun intended!). Deep purple dark body color with maybe some lighter dark pomengranate red to it as well. These puple brews from these guys man… got to admit they are something else!

Real nice fruity nose. Very subtle hints of blue berries and dark berried fruit. Wine like sensing heat on the nose but not burning alcohol. There's a bit of icing sugar that brings out some interesting sweetness on the fruit angle, almost cake and pastry like. Does not come off on the nose as anything sour is coming. Quite neat.

Very impressive palate and unique. Tangy but rich dark chocoloate flavors, mixing in with an excellent berry quality. Bursting juicy berries with a tangy sourness, more akin to a thick rich wine, but has no booze like flavor. Light acidity with touches of cab sauv flavors and dark chocolate. Excellent fruit finish with wonderful pops of juiced mixed berries, currant, black and blue indeed. Faint touches of roast and dark chocolate make a nice rounding out as well. Wonderfuly rounded and oaky body.

Very unique brew, with very impressive wine like character, and matching stout and wine fruited quality. Definitely one style blur and unique tasty brew. Memorable, hope they bring this back again someday.
