Saison Rue is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned, Belgian/French-style farmhouse ale. This is a beer of subtlety and complexity, with malted rye, spicy, fruity yeast notes, biscuit-like malt backbone and a slight citrus hop character. With age, this beer will dry out and will become more complex with rustic notes of leather and earth from the contribution of a wild yeast strain. Being a saison, Saison Rue is ambiguous unto itself as it is a different beer when fresh and when aged.

750ml bottle into a tulip. 2015 release.
Looks splendid in the glass. Dull dark amber/orange body. Bright white head shrinks to a thick collar and covering, exquisite lacing.
Fruit aroma dominant, with some spice notes.
On tasting, incredible complexity. Almost like you get a new different note with each mouthful. Fruit, spice, sweetness, dry, funk, sour, bitter. None are dominant, all mild. Beautiful balance.
Mouth closer to full than medium, finish initially fruity and sweet, then a dry spice bitterness.
Overall, a very fine drink indeed. Complex, varied, great beer to muse over.

2017 version. Tried 10 Jul 2021.
Poured in the 2015 Black Crack snifter.
Small beige head lingers a bit. Well carbonated. Slightly hazy goldenrod in color. Aroma is nice, floral, some rye spiciness, touch of citrus, earthy. Lots of rye, barnyard, citrus honey sweetness. Medium body. Tastes a bit less than 8.5%. Quite yeasty and rye spiciness throughout.
Much better than the 2016 last week.

Rerate, 750 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9.5%. Slightly hazy deep golden colour, large white head. Pleasant aroma of farmhouse kitchen and oaked apple cider, a hint of white wine vinegar. Medium sour flavour, oaky with lemon and apple cider vinegar, a hint of rye bread in the background. Dry finish.
Original rating: 750 ml bottle at Øl & Mat-festivalen, Oslo. ABV is 8.5%. The beer starts pouring out of the bottle by itself. Cloudy amber colour, moderate white head. Nice aroma of Belgian ale yeast, fruity and spicy notes. Fruity, spicy and yeasty flavour, quite nice. Very moderate hops.

2015 bottle. Hazy orange hued golden color. White head.
Lots of rye spice and a sweeter note. Almost tastes like bubblegum. Clove and coriander. Lots of spices. Kind of dry, kind of earthy/grassy. It’s an okay saison.
-
Edit: drinking a really old bottle 3/22
Nice saison. Bubblegum notes. Surprised the Brett isn’t overwhelming. Earthy, spiced, smooth. Really solid. 3.75

2015 bottle enjoyed 7-15-2020. Pours with decent head, brett funk in nose, rye malt flavors dominant, with very dry finish, flavor improves substantially as it warms up. Seems to be a bit past its prime at 5 years, but still aged well and is a very good beer.

2016 vintage.
From Donald
Poured into Ommegang Snifter
The cap yields a gushing bomber that took 25 minutes to settle down. I lost half the bottle in the process.
Pours a dark honey color with a cap of 3 fingers, receding to a creamy ring.
Aromas of ginger, honey, and coriander with slight unripe pear.
Flavors of clove, banana, honey, coriander, lavender, pear, apple, and cinnamon.
Feel is crisp yet very creamy, has slight alcohol warmth, and a spicy dryness.
Overall a decent beer, wish mine wasn't such a mess.

2016 vintage. 750 ml bottle poured into a chalice
Look - hazy golden body with white head
Smell- apple, pear, ginger, coriander, Brett funk
Taste - pear, apple, ginger, coriander, rye spice, Brett funk
Mouthfeel- medium bodied, full carbonation, citrus upfront from the apple/pear, Brett funk to follow and a spicy kick from the rye on the back end.
Overall - this is a good beer, unique in the sense that I’ve never had a saison with rye added. That spicy rye kick adds a new dimension to the drinking experience of this beer. Worth a try.
Price Point - $6.99/750 ml bottle
