Mélange #1 was the first in our line of barrel-aged beer blends and continues to be one of our favorites. A curious blend of our bourbon barrel-aged stout, Black Tuesday, along with our Flemish-style sour red ale, Oude Tart, this beer is unique and delightful. Forging flavors of toasty oak, vanilla and toffee along with notes of leather and dark fruit, both the full bodied essence of the bourbon barrel aged ale and the sour quality of our wild ale are present in this well rounded beer.

Mélange #1 was first released in a bottle in 2011, but was actually first served as cask ale back in 2008.

Bottled 11/13/15 and consumed in mid September 2021! Proper age on this beer. Been wanting to try it since I discovered this brewery. What a gutsy blend. Super sour with plenty of funk and lots of rich malt and stout sweetness. Weird but drinkable and delicious.

Jet black with film of tan; wood, balsamic vinegar, ash, + earth on the nose; wood, raspberry, carob, a bourbon barrel thread, and a late winey hit with pomegranate + bracing tartness to end; clean, dry, light.

2019 release

Starts with a weirdly aggressive nose that deconstructs into its parts. Tastewise, it’s a Flanders Red with enough stout to make it palatable more so than a real blend.
But it’s the bourbon barrel aging that really throws a twist into things: too much bourbon doesn’t totally work.
Some nice Flanders Red depth but loses the nuance of the Imperial Stout.

Bottled 10/9/14; drank 3/11/15 @ Harvest Hop Haus.

Brown appearance.

Minimal tan head; almost no lace.

Tart cherry notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Tart cherry, red wine & mild chocolate flavors up front; a tart finish.

More of a fruity sour than a strong ale, but this was tasty nonetheless.

750ml bottle into snifter. Bottled 9/27/2013.

A: Pours a very dark raisin brown with a frothy, billowing, active, fluffy tan head that frothed up after the pour and took forever to slowly fade into a thin film.
S: Oude tart notes of musty basement and tannic cherry skins/pits dominate. Slight musty oxidization. I get a hint of caramel. Musty and and lightly tart smelling. Cherry skins dominate.
T: Oude tart flavors of musty cherry skins still dominate the flavor but the stout adds a depth and dark thick heavy quality to the flavor profile. I wouldn't think there was Black Tuesday in this if I didn't know it as I really don't get any obvious barrel aged stout flavors. Rather, like I said, the stouts adds a deep rich base to the tart cherry and damp basement/musty wood flavors. Hints of caramel and maybe vanilla. Just a touch of booze warmth in the finish. Caramel and wood in the aftertaste along with dark cherry pits.
M: Full body, tartness is easy and smooth and doesn't overpower the mouthfeel. Finish is lightly drying and lightly tannic. Carbonation is very soft and tight but also frothy and ample, and this drank much better with some of it burned off. Alcohol is hidden very well, drinks very smoothly.
O: Very easy to drink with smooth and balanced flavors, but I'm a bit disappointed in that I thought the stout would stand out more, but regardless, still very delicious.

Saw this at their brewery when visiting a little while back. Oude Tart and Black Tuesday blend? Down! Huge imperial stout and Flanders red notes. Roasty coffee, dark chocolate, nutella, red wine, lemon and oak. Amazingly well balanced!
