Sans Pagaie translates to “without a paddle” and is our take on the Belgian-style kriek, a sour blonde ale aged in barrels with cherries. The base beer has a subtle funk that melds gently with the fruit giving this beer flavors reminiscent of coconut, vanilla yogurt and of course, fresh cherries. A complex beer, perfect for a warm California day in the park with a slice of home made chocolate cake.

I frickin love this beer. I’ve always loved a good kriek and this is such a unique interpretation with just enough adherence the standard. There’s a hint of funk (wish there were more bret maybe.) A wonderful dry finish and perfect level of tartness. It feels very light. It would be perfect in the summer at a pool or beach. There’s more funk on the nose than pallet. Worth picking up again if I see it.

2015 bottle consumed early August 2021. Interesting take on a kriek but leave it to this brewery to do it right with an American interpretation. Super funky with plenty of tart cherry flavor and finish. Delightful!

Drinking a 2016 batch from a 750ml bottle in a wide mouth muffin top glass
L: Hazy pinkish blonde color, a little darker than a rose but you can still very clearly see the blonde ale backbone shining through
S: Cherries, Red berries, spicy blonde ale, barnyard funk. Smells exactly like a kriek should
T: Cherries and Strawberries heavily upfront with an incredible sour kick that could make anyone pucker, finishes spicy and dry.
F: Very pleasant medium bodied mouthfeel that on some tastes comes across as a bit creamy.
O: Incredible American example of a Kriek but a bit overly sour. Sadly the tartness overwhelms some of the other flavors which makes this one fall slightly short of our right phenomenal. Regardless I'm very pleased with this one and the fact I got it on clearance at my local store for $4.99 just makes it taste all the better.

Sans Pagaie 2017. Ruby to red color with white head, aroma and taste of an old cherry compote with a medium sourness, medium body, average carbonation.

Bottled 6/18/15; drank 8/8/15 @ Harvest Hop Haus.
Ruby red appearance.
Minimal white head; no lace.
Sour strawberry notes in the nose.
Medium thick mouthfeel.
Bold strawberry flavor up front; SUPER tart strawberry finish.
Powerful flavor, but too sour for this timid soul to truly embrace.

Amber to red in color with a fingernail of off white around the rim and and covering a third of the top. The aroma is of tart cherries and oak. I’m tasting very tart cherries with plenty of lactic sourness that is tempered slightly by the smooth finish from the oak. The mouth is otherwise moderately carbonated and dry.

Top left corner says "2017."
This was poured into a tulip. Rounded pink to bright orange glossy color. Slight cap of a little white foamy to bubbly head slid off nicely. No lace.
The aroma had a superb meshing of tart to sweet to sour cherry flesh and skin. With a little bit of warming, the sour cherry fleshiness starts to come out a tad bolder than expected.
The flavor seems to mesh the sour to the tart in front of just a touch of the sweetness. It's all about the cherries, the flesh, the skin, the pit and extremely awesome. Mild sticky tart to sour aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt on par. Semi-sticky cherry fleshy sour to tart finish.
Overall, superb cherry Belgian ale. You can send me down this "cherry" creek without a paddle head first and I'd gladly soak up all of this cherry goodness.
