Oude Tart is a Flemish-Style Red Ale aged in red wine barrels for up to 18 months. This version has had boysenberries added for the final stages of barrel-aging. In fact, there are over two gallons of boysenberry purée per barrel. The final compilation is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit, tart boysenberries and toasty oak. While the Flemish-style red ale is one of the more classic beer styles that we make, it's not a style that you can find too often in the United States. Originating in style from the Flanders region of Belgium, near the French border, this dark, sour ale has roots deep in brewing history and predates most of the ales that have become popular in contemporary culture. We're doing our best to keep the tradition alive by brewing and aging this beer here on the west coast.

750 ml bottle, 2020 edition, couldn't find the bottling date on this one. Served in a Bruery tulip, the beer pours a murky dark brownish color with a ruby red tinge and about an inch or so tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like boysenberries, oak, cherries, earthiness and a bit of vinegar. Taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some lemony flavors. Good amount of tartness in this brew. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit coating and easy to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this one, seems to have aged well. Worth trying if you get the chance!

Bottled 9/23/15 and consumed late January 2022. Held up remarkably well. Incredible dark sour fruit character with a delicious yet dry feel and finish. A really special beer. I imagine this was quite tart at first but has mellowed with age.

Bottled 9/23/15; drank 1/9/16 @ Harvest Hop Haus.
Murky purple/brown appearance.
Minimal khaki head; no lace.
Tart raspberry & cherry notes in the nose.
Medium thick mouthfeel.
Raspberry & cherry flavors up front; a tart finish. At my limit of how much sour I can handle, but still tasty.

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip to a deep brown with slight reddish highlights topped by a modest tan head that fades quickly leaving minimal lacing
S: Smells of sour cherry, boysenberry, oak funk and hints of leather
T: Taste is sourness up front with boysenberries, oak, funk, and a little leather, slight caramel as well. Swallow is a nice blast of sourness with lingering funk, oak and boysenberry.
M: The beer has a medium body with soft carbonation and a dry finish from the acidity
O: Overall this is a great play on the base beer with the fruit addition providing an additional layer of complexity. Definitely one to try if you're a fan of the base beer.
